Who saved Jamestown besides John Smith?

The story we know is not true. Actually the colonist landed in an area of 14,000 Native Americans and in the worse land in the area. Powhatan pretty much left them alone. I think he figured that they would die from the bad water and disease . He was fairly right. Within 6 months there were only 34 men left alive of the 104 who came. It wasn't until after his death that the brother of Powhatan attacked the colony. The story about Smith is also not true. He did NOT save Jamestown. He was only there a very few months and he lied about his contribution to the settlement in a book he wrote several years later. He also made up the story about Pocahontas and she died young so couldn't refute his story. The man who did save Jamestown was the husband of Pocahontas and gave tobacco seeds to the colony. That was John Rolfe.

Why is John Smith and John Rolfe alike?

Did the Collins name change to Callan when they moved to the north of England?

My Great Grandfather Mathew Callan moved to Durham ( Kelloe area) from Ireland as a child. After much searching we found that on his marriage certificate he was a Collin(s) as was his father also Mathew. Immediately after he either changed his name to Callan or the Registrar misheard him re his marriage certificate. Throughout his life he was called Callan as were all of his children and are still through the generations. I'm afraid I don't know of any link to Micheal Collins. Mathew was married in 1871 to (Mary )Jane Stones. Wonder if your family is the same Best wishes Chrys Callan

What happened to the captured colors after Naseby?

The Colours and Standards captured at Naseby were taken to London where, in the customary way, they were paraded through the streets as a celebration of the victory (a similar thing happened after Blenheim, Ramillies, etc. etc.). There is a contemporary account of this in a newspaper in the Thomason Tract collection entitled 'The Manner How Prisoners are to be Brought into the City of London this Present Saturday being the 21. oif June, 1645' (TT E288.45). What happened to the colours after that is uncertain but it seems likely that they were hung up in Westminster Hall, where Parliament sat and where previous trophies had been taken, and that they stayed there until 1660 when, shortly before the King was due to enter London, it was decided it would be a good idea for them to be taken down. Where they went then is a mystery although many years ago I recall talking to Lawson Nagel who suggested that they had probably gone to the College of Heralds and that maybe, just maybe, somewhere in the College's records is a mention of them. I hope that this helps Stephen Ede-Borrett
