Is it wise to completely shut down a company that is causing pollution?

Answer It depends

Answer:

This is too open a question to respond to directly as it is dependant on what type of pollution you are refering to. Should it be an enterprise that is simply pumping noxious gases into the air, then the answer would be yes. If the business is responsible for pollutants entering local water supplies and therefore local land then the answer may be far more complex as one must consider the obligation of the company to rectify the damage they have caused, knowlingly or unknowingly. One answer would be "you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs" and this is certainly valid if we wish to kept the advantages of modern technology as there is always a price to pay in many broken eggs. However, many modern technologies can now be approached from different directions; the stumbling block being the initial start-up costs. Again, the problem here lies in evaluating actual cost against the benefit of an ecological balance - something I feel that must be incorporated into all business directives such we wish to survive as a species. There is a phrase from the North American Indians and also the Chinese that states "Only when the rivers are empty of fish and the forests empty of animals will people realise they can't eat money". Our seas are in danger of being emptied of fish. We are not the biggest predator here but are certainly responsible for a massive imbalance that only time and nature can heal. We are directly responsible for often terrible pollution and seem to consistently ignore our responsibilities leaving it to action groups such as Greenpeace to bring the issues to the public's attention when such should never have been allowed to happen in the first place should correct business standards have been mandatory. The American Government, or more precisely, Texas, set the standard of preferring financial gain to ecologic responsibility by forcing the U.S. to not participate in the Carbon Dioxide reduction program agreed upon by the rest of the World. Many Americans voiced the fact that they were embarassed by their own country over this issue but that does not change the fact. Perhaps now, our only solution is to allow a World Overseeing body to regulate all issues of pollution that individual countries must recognise. Greed, of course, will sadly not allow this to happen. I am not a scientist so I am not qualified to correctly answer this question but I am a very concerned individual as I am currently living in China where I see many things that can simply wipe out the population here (namely, terrible air and an increasing loss of farmland) unless the problems are addressed very quickly.

Are EURO4 emissions better than EURO5 emissions?

No, in every cathegory the EURO5 emission levels are more stringent then EURO4.

For example, at Diesel Passanger Cars, PM level is 0.025 g/km (EURO4) and 0.005 g/km (EURO5)

Emission measurement methods might have been modified as well.

What pollution affects the tundra?

Power plants and factories burn different fossil fuels like coal and oil. The smoke and fumes from burning fossil fuels rise into the atmosphere and combine with the moisture in the air to form acid rain. Acid rain is damaging to the leaves of many trees, it limits the nutrients available to them, and can poison them with toxic substances slowly released from the soil.

How can we conserve water?

There are many ways that we can conserve water each day. Taking shorter showers, turning off the water while brushing your teeth are two ways. When you do dishes, do not leave the water running. Collect rain water in order to water your garden in the summer months.

How are DO and BOD content measured?

  • Dissolved oxygen is measured by the Winkler titration method.
  • BOD5 is measured by putting a known volume of bacteria in a sample of the fluid to be insppected at the saturation point of oxygen, keeping it at a specified temperature for 5 fays then measuring the oxygen content.
Both procedures are found in the "Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater"

How Is ground water naturally contaminated?

It is not natural for water to be contaminated, however, all natural water is contaminated because water in essence is a particle carrier and particles are contaminants.

What did Mr Lash president of the World Resources Institute in Washington mean when he said poor countries do not need to pass through the valley of the shadow of pollution?

Well since many countries have rapidly introduced industrialization it caused pollution which cost lots of money and when you clean it up it caused people to back into poverty.

He was commenting that the process of industrialization does not have to exactly follow that which was mapped out by the first industrial countries.

By that, he meant that there were many shortcuts possible in the process of industrialization, and that, with proper planning, many of the mistakes made by the first industrializing countries didn't have to be repeated. Most of those mistakes have lead to severe environmental pollution, and he was stating that a poor country could industrialize successfully without having to make these same pollution-causing mistakes.

What is industrial pollution?

Industrial pollution is pollution which can be directly linked with industry, in contrast to other pollution sources. This form of pollution is one of the leading causes of pollution worldwide; in the United States, for example, the Environmental Protective Agency estimates that up to 50% of the nation's pollution is caused by industry. Because of its size and scope, industrial pollution is a serious problem for the entire planet, especially in nations which are rapidly industrializing, like China.

This form of pollution dates back to antiquity, but widespread industrial pollution accelerated rapidly in the 1800s, with the start of the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution mechanized means of production, allowing for a much greater volume of production, and generating a corresponding increase in pollution. The problem was compounded by the use of fuels like coal, which is notoriously unclean, and a poor understanding of the causes and consequences of pollution.

There are a number of forms of industrial pollution. One of the most common is water pollution, caused by dumping of industrial waste into waterways, or improper containment of waste, which causes leakage into groundwater and waterways. Industrial pollution can also impact air quality, and it can enter the soil, causing widespread environmental problems.

Because of the nature of the global environment, industrial pollution is never limited to industrial nations. Samples of ice cores from Antarctica and the Arctic both show high levels of industrial pollutants, illustrating the immense distances which pollutants can travel, and traces of industrial pollutants have been identified in isolated human, animal, and plant populations as well.

Industrial pollution hurts the environment in a range of ways, and it has a negative impact on human lives and health. Pollutants can kill animals and plants, imbalance ecosystems, degrade air quality radically, damage buildings, and generally degrade quality of life. Factory workers in areas with uncontrolled industrial pollution are especially vulnerable.

A growing awareness of factory pollution and its consequences has led to tighter restrictions on pollution all over the world, with nations recognizing that they have an obligation to protect themselves and their neighbors from pollution. However, industrial pollution also highlights a growing issue: the desire of developing nations to achieve first world standards of living and production. Those countries that are already industrialized want to keep their place in the World Economy, and those that aren't want a better position in the world economy eg China. As these countries industrialize, they add to the global burden of industrial pollution, triggering serious discussions and arguments about environmental responsibility and a desire to reach a global agreement on pollution issues.

Industrial pollution is unwanted liquid or solid wastes dumped [intentionally or unintentionally] in the environment.

What absorbents should you use to remove small oil spills?

Oil may be removed by:

  • Absorbents which preferentially absorb oil without getting (water) wet.
  • Coagulants which clot the oil into an easier removed gel
  • Cryogenic booms which freeze the oil on a metal surface for removal
  • Oleophilic tubing systems which draw oil to a removal system
  • Booms
  • Insitu incineration

What is the meaning of irreparable harm?

== Irreparable harm is a harm that is hard to be compenasated or repaired. For example the patent infringmenet losses are sometimes irreparable, because it is almost impossible to repaire the damage caused by the infringmenet of the patent.

== More simply, it's harm that cannot be repaired with money.
