What units of our government existed before the war for independence?
Before the 1776 Declaration of Independence and subsequent war with England over independence, there was no national government in the sense that we understand today. Each colony (state) was somewhat independent from the other colonies and each had a governor that was appointed by the British monarch, not elected by the colonists. The duty of the governor was to enforce British law on the colonists and their loyalty was to the Crown before the colony. Each colony had a state legislature which either typically had chosen representatives (usually white male landowners) or direct representation where (again) white male landowners would meet periodically. While these legislative houses would meet and discuss issues, they did not have power to write, enact or enforce any laws in the colony. As "citizens of the British Empire", they were bound to English laws passed by Parliament in England or enacted by the monarch.
The courts of the colonies followed British law and judges were usually assigned by the Monarch.

How did Sarah Palin's speech at the 2008 Republican National Convention effect votes?
The initial indication is that it did not impress independent voters, but provided a bump in the Republican base. The speech was written for her and it's unclear how that will impact people who were initially impressed. == == ---- == == I don't think it will do anything. Sarah Palin can speak in public--pageant contestants are trained to. But she's got some really extreme views, starting with her belief that the birth control pill is a form of abortion. She's also somewhat corrupt--she fired the commissioner of the Alaska Department of Public Safety because he wouldn't fire her sister's ex-husband. Women are smart enough to realize Sarah Palin isn't on their side. ---- I have no idea how it will play with all women, but I do know one thing, this woman is very smart and she should win over a lot of people, not just women
A hard question to answer, and the jury - in the form of all the major political analysts - is still out on this. So the following is purely a matter of opinion, not of predicting the future.
One problem in sizing Trump up is that he is a master public relations manager with an excellent radar for what his constituents - today poor whites, rednecks and religious fanatics - want to hear him say now. So what he says that his ideas are may well be much different from what his ideas really are. And should he become President his policies might change a lot. Trump is by all accounts an intelligent and successful businessman who did not get where he is today by being an idiot and a fanatic. And he really has no-one to thank or return favors to for becoming President if he does - much unlike Mrs. Clinton.
He already acknowledges today that he will have to adapt and compromise. So he may well turn out to be a more 'mainstream' conservative President in many fields with a big-city (so, fairly liberal) attitude towards 'moral' subjects like abortion. Republicans will love his ideas of making other Western countries pay much more in contribution to NATO and making a 'deal' with Putin on east-west relations. Many Republicans are naturally inclined to isolationism with regards to the world's troubles and fights, so many will also like Trump's idea to remain mostly uninvolved. Finally, Trump's attitude towards global warming and the environment is not so far removed from general Republican attitudes on the subject. His idea not to kowtow so much to Saudi Arabia will also find general support. And he will very probably quickly drop the "Mexican Wall"- idea and the one of forced mass evacuation of Mexicans altogether when shown its practical problems - if he's not already perfectly aware of them.
So the final verdict may be that he will be (grudgingly, at first) accepted by most Republicans and unite them behind him.
