Actually, robots are not yet like the sci-fi robots, but they are useful in industry to do

repetitive processes in assembly lines such are make welds. You can buy what is called a robot vacuum cleaner that will run over your floor, change direction when it hits something or is about to fall down the stairs.

Besides this, robots may be used in enterntainment. For example, there was invented RoboFisher and this robot allows to catch fish from the distance. The robot is placed on the bank of a lake and you can control the fishing robot from your mobile device or computer. At the end of the fishing session the fish is released back in the water.

Mechatronics is a technology feild created by the marriage of mechanically operated equipment and electronically controlled equipment (computer controls) in manufacturing. The introduction of Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machinery in the 1970's and the introduction of robot controlled equipment in the late 1980's to the late 1990's is what created mechatronics. The last link in the chain was the introduction of Programmable Logic Contols (PLC) in the mid to late 1990's. By joining all three of these technologies together, manufacturing from raw materials to finished and assembled product was possible through automation with minimal human in process labor.

I worked for in Robotics for three years. The robotic arms were used in many industries including automobile manufacture. Ie welding of sub frames and paint spraying.

Robot sensors detect different things and send different amounts of electricity to the Robot's controller board to tell their findings. Then the controller board uses these different amounts of electricity to interact with its surroundings.

Example:

Lets say you have a robot that is made to follow light. Lets say your robot has 3 light sensors. One in the front of your robot one on the right and one on the left side. The sensors will detect how much light is on the front, right, and left sides and send this data to the controller board.
