The description that you provided gives me little clue about the circumstances when you experience this jerking. You did not mention a check engine light. The only thing I can think of is an engine misfire which should also set a check engine light.

I have also owned Subarus that have quite a bit of driveline "slop". That is when going from decelerating to accelerating, or accelerating to decelerating, there is some looseness in various components that makes the transition less than smooth. This would be considered normal and is not a problem that you can fix without a lot of expense.

First, Change the rear differential oil with 90w-140 gear oil and run it to see if it quiets the noise(it won't make it go away). While you are under there check the axles where they enter the diff, if they are lose disassemble and check bearings. Replace if necessary. Im gonna do that this weekend myself actually.

I did change my rear diff oil and that quieted it significantly.

R134a. There should be a sticker under your hood with that and other important information about your air conditioning system.

If you are thinking about adding refrigerant to see if you can get the system to work, it is not a good idea. You may succeed in getting a leaky system to work for a while or you may damage the compressor beyond repair. Are you feelin' lucky?

Also, R134a is a very powerful greenhouse gas. According to an article on allpar.com, 1400 times as effective at trapping heat as carbon dioxide. Just in case you have a social conscience.

The Subaru 2.5 L engine is a non-interference engine. If you change the timing belt when it should be changed you don't need to worry either way.

On my OBW, I find it a lot easier to remove the Headlight Housing assy(that way you get access to all the bulbs), replace the faulty bulb by a Brand X H1-12V-55W(make sure you don't touch the glass), check if it's working & re-install the housing. Bingo...

Will fit Legacy/Outback Model Year 1995 to 1999.

Under the engine on the left side side facing to the rear, there is a plastic skid plate . Pop off (using a flat screwdriver) the three or four plastic screws on the front of the skid plate right behind the fender assembly. Grab the handle(look and you will see it) and slide it forward. If it hasn't been off in a while, it may take a little coaxing. You will see the filetr and the oil pan screw. Good luck.

There is a sensor located just behind the alternator on top of the engine. I forget if it is the crank position sensor or what, but it has a single wire to it. You can look it up on a diagram. Mine was running terrible, I did not think I would make it home, I had to really nurse the throttle. It would jump up in rpms then drop a few hundred. That sensor change fixed it

the motor will bolt up, compression ratio will change unless you get a cometic head gasket that is matching for both.

You need to remove the headlight above it, which is about 3 or 4 screws, and the wires to the headlight.

Remove the headlight partially and let it hang,
OR totally disconnect it and GENTLY place it someplace it wont get bumped.

Then you have full access to reach down and work on the back of the fog lights. Its pretty straightforward from there.

OR, if youhave access to a lift and dont mind holding up your arms for 45 minutes, you can do it from underneath.

most of these door systems are vacuum controlled...but a pencil or object stuck internally can also be the cause, and not often easy to fix...for the vacuum system you can find specs and routing at the local library... check all the vacuum lines on the engine, and listen for vacuum hissing under the dash...good luck..:)
