How do you repair the driver's door power window switch in a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback?

You need to buy a new switch. Unfortunately its an assembly with all window switches and the lock. Mine cost $160 at the local dealers. You should be able to get a cheaper price online or perhaps on eBay, if there's no rain/snow in the forecast.

Then you need to take off the whole door panel. There are three round plastic plugs on the door panel, two have screws under them. You can pop them off with a knife or small flat screwdriver. Then there's a triangular piece at the top front (or else a tweeter). I had a tweeter and everything just pops off, a medium flat screwdriver is great here. Next get a flat screwdriver in between the panel and the door and find a place where it is just snapped in, then snap it out. You need to go all around the door and snap these out. Try not to mange the panel. Once it's loose you can lift it up. Then there are three electrical connectors, for the light in the door, the window panel, and the lock switch. They slid out easily for me. Finally the whole panel should be free. I laid it in the grass and unscrewed a lot of similar screws until the window switch molding came free of the door. Then some more of those screws attach the new switch. Screw the switch back as it was, connect the wires and put the panel back in place, starting at the top. If you have a tweeter wire there is a little indentation for it. I had mine all back together when I noticed I had a part left over. It's a white thing that just clips on the top of the door. I found the marks where it had been clipped.

Here's another description, you ought to be able to find more descriptions of taking off the door panel on the net. The window switch part is easy.

Can a 2.2 engine run without a thermostsat in a outback?

why do you want to. This would be a terrible idea as the 2.2 engines have head gasket issues. When the gasket weakens, the engine will start to overheat, and without a thermostat you wont know until the gasket blows and you ruin the entire engine. So you "can" run without a thermostat if you feel like blowing your engine.

Why are your brake lights out on your 1996 Subaru Outback Impreza?

Check the bulbs - they are double filamented with the smaller being for the brake lights

Check the fuse

Check the operation and adjusment of the stop light switch - usually located at the upper end of the brake pedal under dash area

I have a 1991 subaru loyal station wagon I use as a work car and had the exact same problem with mine.

I checked the fuse checked the bulbs, even replaced them all with no luck.

but I did find what was wrong. The tail lights are all on one harness that connect the sockets to each other. I replaced that harness and the brake lights worked again.

You can go to a junk yard and take the harness out of another subaru of that year and model and you shouldn't have any problems after that

I replaced the one on the passenger side because it seemed to be the main one.

Hope this helps

What is the lug nut torque spec for a 2003 Outback?

The lug nut torque specification for a 2003 Subaru Outback is typically 90 foot-pounds (ft-lbs) or 122 Newton-meters (Nm). It's important to always consult the owner's manual or a repair guide for the most accurate information, as specifications can vary slightly based on the specific model and wheel type. Ensure that lug nuts are tightened in a crisscross pattern for even distribution.

Can you replace a 2006 Outback Stereo?

Yes I can, thanks for asking.

Reading between the lines and if I understand why you are asking, check out crutchfield.com. There is a replacement for the section on the dash around the radio and heater controls. You will need to supply a little more information about the equipment in your car.

Crutchfield has reasonable prices, all of the plugs and adapters you need, and good customer support in case you have problems. I am not affiliated with them in any way except as a customer.

How much does it cost to replace the clutch on 1998 Subaru Outback?

If you go to a normal shop, the parts are rarely the issue. Clutch jobs run from $600-800 depending on the reputability of the shop and the area of the country you are in. Always check the warranty or lack thereof. They will always make up charges to get it up as close as they can to $1000, no matter if it is a subaru, SAAb, or chevy.

There will be shop fees, energy fees, disposal fees, tax, and labor at $90/hr or better. If you really want the listed labor rate go to alldata.com, get a membership, and get the actual hours of labor for the job. If they charge more hours than in alldata, go to a different shop. These are standards based on the make of the vehicle. Make sure they itemize all charges before you take the car in.

Also, BE SURE TO CHANGE THE THROW OUT BEARING. If it is integrated into the clutch slave cylinder, replace with a NEW ONE. Make sure you specify NEW hydraulic clutch fluid in the entire system. If it is a cable clutch, change the cable too. You will kick yourself later if you do not replace all the components at this time. Also, make sure the flywheel is resurfaced professionally, not just a brillo pad on a drill. Pilot bearing has to be replaced too.

What oil and weight should be used in a 2006 Subaru Outback?

How do you remove the stock stereo from a Subaru Legacy Outback?

Easy one. I bought my replacement stereo from Crutchfield, who also supplies wiring harnesses for each individual car, First, remove screws from console and shifter arm (be careful) remove carefully console and center trim and set aside. Remove bezel (cover) from around radio by 2 screws under bezel. Remove bezel to expose radio assembly. 4 screws hold in radio and storage compartment. (unhook battery early) Remove 4 screws and radio assembly will slide out easily. Change out stereo (lots of mounting holes to choose from) by removing antenna lead and wiring harness plug. Attach wiring harness plug from crutchfield (Easy, solder or tape white wire to white wire, orange to orange, etc...) Plug in harness end to harness end, and re-install in reverse order. No botched wires, jerry-rigged connections, and using factory harness enables speaker setup and looks like it was built that way. total cost; 130.00 plus your time. Crutchfield supplies everything, and has several choices for stereos. Easy and professional. I have used same stereo on 3 cars now, just needed different wiring harnesses. Enjoy and don't forget to reconnect battery.

Why does your 1997 subaru outback 83000 miles have a burning oil smell and smoke coming from engine?

Perhaps oil has leaked onto the exhaust manifold.

Oil LeakOil leak, probably valve cover gaskets need replacing or just tightening. Also if it started suddenly after an oil change, the filter may be leaking, or you spilled oil on the manifold.

This MY & others had problems with both the cranshaft oil seal. The rear one leaks onto the exhaust and can make a horrible burning oil smell, notably when you stop after a long drive.

Head Gasket

Outbacks up to 2001 have issues with head gaskets, its a widespread problem. If the smoke is white and smells sweet it is coolant leaking into the pistons via a head gasket. Replace the head gasket before it fails. If you blow the head gasket it will ruin the engine.

Cam Seals

It is most likely the cam seals dripping small amounts of oil onto to the bottom of the engine block. When the engine warms up, it will burn the oil off.

Oil Pressure Switch

It could also be the oil pressure switch (oil pressure sender) leaking oil. This is the sensor that looks like a large bolt with a single wire attached to it located underneath the alternator at the front top of the engine. Watch it closely while the engine is running for an obvious leak. Much more easily resolved than the above possible problems. Also check to make sure that the oil pump is not leaking. Oil can drip down from the oil pump and burn which would create smoke.

How do you replace spark plugs on a 2001 subaru 3.0 engine?

this is a rather huge deal, I have an 01 H6 and have the local mechanic do it because there is so much involved. you first need to remove the with the H6 logo on it. the one that sits on the top of the car and is for looks only. you then will have to remove heat shields and other hoses and wires that get in the way. with the H6 does no have spark plug wires or anything of that nature, the coils sit on top of the spark plugs. each plug has a coil and each coil has a wire and plug that clips to a harness. these will all need to be unclipped and the plugs removed. gap and install new plugs, and then go in reverse order with putting the coil packs on and so forth. if you can find a good mechanic it would better to let him do it as like I say this is project not for beginers. good luck
