How do you survive Chemistry?

Just know that it is more important to have a sound understanding of the concepts. You can memorize and learn short-cuts, but if you want to succeed, then understand the laws of the world and the concepts of chemistry. If you can explain the topic to another person, than you have a good understanding of it. Things like the mole, which is a mystery to some second semester students, can become a stumbling block if not learned early. Do more than study: pay attention in class and constantly ask questions and make guesses and then check to see if they are right. Chemistry is the way the world operates - not just something you need to get through in school.

When should algebra be taught?

I think that most schools offer it to freshmens. The school I went offered it at both freshmen and eighth grade if you tested out of regular eighth grade math. Algebraic concepts are taught as early as Grade K. Algebra as a subject in other countries is taught in late elementary school along with basic computations. In Ohio (where I live now) Algebra as a class is taught as early as 7th grade for high school credit to students who have the ability. In the United States, the most common grade to begin Algebra as a class is grade 9. However, when should it be taught is as soon as a student is able to grasp the material. Most students understand basic algebra concepts (properties like 2 + 3 is the same as 3 + 2, OR if 1 + 2 = 3 and 0 + 3 = 3, then 1 + 2 = 0 + 3 OR that a variable is the same as the blank space they've been filling in all along, 4 x ___ = 20 is the same as 4b = 20) as early as they begin computations. If these concepts are introduced correctly, basic algebra class becomes very simple for middle school students.

What would you take if you were forced to go into hiding and you could only take what you can fit into a backpack?

When you have to leave, it is most common to grab a kit to hold you over for 72 hours. You will want some other basics, but your main supplies will last three days. That gives you time to find more, but enough to get you out of the area.

Some common items:

  • Any forms of ID, licenses, insurance, or certificates you might need
  • Pocketknife and a sharpening stone
  • Non perishable foods. Dried foods are much lighter than canned in case you need to be on foot. Crackers, dried meats, and dried fruits will get most of the food groups in there for you.
  • Water, and if possible, a way to sanitize more water. Powdered electrolytes like Gatorade
  • Flashlight and batteries. It is better to go with a smaller one that takes AA or AAA batteries if you don't have much space
  • Shelter, such as a tarp. Look up how to use it ahead of time.
  • Medications that you are required to have
  • Cash
  • Waterproof matches
  • Notepad and pencil
  • Weather radio
  • Key ring can opener, small hand tools, like a hammer. Tools like a Leatherman are multi-functional
  • Maps of your area
  • Basic first aid supplies
  • Actual closed shoes or boots, not sandals. Go with leather if possible. Water seal them ahead of time if possible.
  • Socks are more important than a large variety of clothes
  • A wad of dryer lint for starting fires (can be smashed down small), or other fire starter for when things are damp
  • A blanket. Wool is itchy, but will keep you warm even if it is wet
  • Duct tape, bungee cords, rope, clothesline or paracord
  • Sunblock and bug repellant
  • Poncho
  • Mess kit, minimal cooking items
  • If you have room and are in the right area, a collapsable fishing pole and small tin of tackle
