The pre cat O2 sensors record hydrocarbon levels that are compared to the post cat levels to determine emissions efficiency and to adjust fuel/air ratios for operation. There should be a significant drop in hydrocarbon levels between the two showing that the cat is operating correctly. If your aim is to eliminate the cats I cannot tell you if your performance will be affected, your check engine light may come on and stay on making it impossible to get emission certified.
