Toyota Echo

The most common problem with an older Toyota Echo is a dirty throttle body. If you take your car to the dealer they will always recommend cleaning the throttle body. Fortunately this is very easy to do yourself, you want to disconnect the air hose connected to the throttle body, you do not need to remove the throttle body (although you could if you want to clean it even more thoroughly). Spray a generous amount of Seafoam Deep Creep (penetrating cleaning/lubricant) into the throttle body and scrub it with a wire brush or even a tooth brush, work the open/close valve by hand as you clean, when it is open you can clean further into the throttle body, there is also a tiny hole that you should focus your cleaning efforts on. Towel it dry and repeat until the towel comes out clean, you can also leave a bit of the deep creep in there overnight, it will not harm your engine.

If that doesn't do the trick, the problem could be the fuel filter or fuel pump. An engine needs 4 things to run, fuel, air, compression, and spark. Your problem could be related to any of these. Its pretty easy to check your air filter. Hard to check the fuel filter or fuel injectors. Compression is probably not the issue, spark plugs are easy to change but probably not your issue either.

Checking/replacing the air filter, clean the mass airflow sensor at the same time (its attached to the air filter box) with electronics cleaner spray. If none of that helps, you want to check the fuel pump and/or replace the mass airflow sensor.

It's a complicated answer, as there is no real set in stone replacement interval. You can easily TEST your alternator whenever you want, using a simple $2 voltmeter. The volt reading on your car battery should go up by about 1-2 volts from when the car is not running, to when it is idling, this is one sign that the alternator is working and charging the battery.

For what its worth, I have a 2000 echo with over 170,000 miles on it, and the original alternator is still working fine. I've also only had to replace the car battery one time.

If you aren't wearing a seatbelt, they can kill you even in a minor accident (solution: wear your seatbelt). If a child is in the front seat, it can kill them (solution: no kids in front seats). In a minor accident it might go off even though you didn't really need it, which can be annoying and expensive to fix (solution: None, but they are well worth it anyway!)

I'm not sure, don't have a hatchback, but look in the passenger side corner of the hatch close to the rear of the car, with the non-hatchback model, there is a somewhat hidden compartment there with a cover that can be removed by pulling, this is where the jack is. I'm sure a lot of people think they don't have a jack when they need it because they don't know about the hidden compartment.

It is the resistor, replace it.

Its a funny thing with Toyota. In Australia the '01 echo is rated to tow 1500 lbs. In Europe its rated to tow 2000 lbs. In Canada and the US, it has no towing rating and they don't recommend you tow with it despite the fact that it comes pre-drilled from the factory for a tow hitch should you want to install one.

I think the difference from country to country is related to legal liability. Personally I have been towing with a 2000 echo for 3 years, up to 1500 lbs. I've experienced no damage or problems whatsoever. I do drive carefully, turn overdrive off, go slow, leave plenty of room between me and anything in front of me, etc. My echo has 170,000 miles on it and is still going strong.

-I'm in Australia and have a 2003 1.4 Toyota ECHO hatch and it can tow a horse trailer!!!! a light horse trailer with only one pony/horse in it, but still! so i think that must be about 750kg for horse trailer & 550kg for a horse = 1300kg!! and its still going ok

Echoes are used by dolphins to hunt for their prey in the deeps of the ocean to locate food. They make sort of clicking noises which bounce off the fish to let them know of how far away they are and how big the fish is.

Its not very difficult, there is a little drain valve at the bottom of the radiator on the drivers side, front of the car. There are pictures and a description here:

But if you want to drain it completely switch your temperature control over to hot.

There is also another drain valve that is difficult to reach, on the back of the engine (you can get to it from under the car or reaching behind the engine) that also supposedly drains coolant, although I don't really know what its purpose is because I think you can completely drain the system from the other drain valve (only a few drips came out when I opened the other valve on my car). Some more info can be found about the second drain valve if you look into the instructions for changing out the water pump (which is NOT an easy job).

1st try to clean it. i opened mine up and cleaned it with alcohol and a q-tip. it had black soot on it. after - the engine light was no longer on and it worked great!

Its about a foot (or slightly less) in front of the oil drain bolt, but up about a foot as well, so you have to reach up to unscrew it. Its easy to see with a flashlight, you can't really mistake it. If the filter was put on too tight, it can be quite difficult to get off, so don't over tighten when you replace it.

it is sugested that you change the fluid every sixty or so thousand, however there isn't relly that much going on in a manul transmission so you don't ever need to change it.

fold down the back seats and lift the whole back shelf off and then you can pop off the covers off from the back of that shelf

Directly behind the timing chain cover which is attached to the engine, on the passenger side of the engine. It is completely sealed so you cannot see it at all unless you remove the cover. It should not need replacement unless you are having a problem that can be attributed to the timing (there is no preventive maintenance replacement interval).

If you bring the vin number and ID to a Toyota dealer ship they can duplicate the key.

Most alternator brackets will have moveable bushings (short sections of pipe usually with a slot in them, in one of the engines brackets) that pinch onto the alternators mounting lugs tightly even after the bolts are removed, you should be able to pry the alternator free, tapping on the engines brackets (next to bushing not the bushing its self) may aid removal, be carefull some are cast aluminum and are breakable.

when i started to get a rough idle in gear cold and warm, with accessories on or off. with 269,xxx miles on it, I cleaned the Mass Air Flow Sensor, and Throttle Body. Using a Mass Air Flow Cleaner from BG and just a Toothbrush and Carb and Choke Cleaner on my Throttle body. about 6k miles later it returned with a slight rough idle, and I replaced my PCV Valve for the first time, now it purrs like a kitten.

The Echo doesn't have a timing belt. It has a timing chain, and this chain will last a very long time. Toyota doesn't recommend replacing it (as a preventative or maintenance measure) unless or until you have problems.

To replace your brake light, you need to unscrew the brake cover from the inside of the trunk. Then you will be able to pull the old bulb out and replace it.

Open the glove box. Now squeeze the sides of the glove box door together and remove the glove box door. You will find the filter on top of the blower motor housing in a trey. Most of them were shipped without a filter. You can find the cabin filter at Pep boys for $12.00.

Pull the old one out and put a new one in its place. You may need a tool that is usually located in the fuse panel to remove the old fuse.
