If you have a baby can you still join the Navy?

If you are a single parent, no - military (not just U.S. Navy) regulations are very specific about disqualification of potential recruits based on single parental status.

If you're married, then sure you can, if you meet all other requirements for entrance.

The key factor is that the dependent child must have a legal guardian or parent to take care of them if the service member is called away for duty, which in the military means anytime and anywhere, and usually on short notice. It is not unusual or without precedent for a parent to give up parental rights and designate their own parents/grandparents as legal guardians of their child so that they may join the military.

That's a tough nut to swallow for most people though, so it doesn't happen often. Most people join the military so that their dependents can benefit, and by giving up your legal status as a parent you're negating that if it was the basis for considering the military in the first place.

As an example of what can happen, in 1983 while my wife (who was also a sailor at the time) was pregnant and in the hospital (prenatal complications) with our daughter, our Squadron (Submarine Squadron 4 in Charleston when it was still there) got orders to Emergency Sortie (get underway immediately) to put to sea in avodance of a hurricane that had changed course and was headed up the coast toward Charleston. Few times in my life have I felt so helpless; having both a house with pets and having to leave my wife in the hospital, I had no choice but to get underway with everyone else as I was a key member of the Sonar Division.

Take that same situation and apply it to if I were a single parent and I'd had to leave my kid but couldn't find anyone (there's never a guarantee you'll return at a specific date after you leave). This is why there is a strict policy on single parents joining the military.

It's different if you suddenly become a single parent and you're already military - there are regulations and support systems in place to deal with that.

Most people, myself included, wind up lea

Why did the us navy develop rov technology?

To improve location efforts for ship/plane/equipment salvage. It's much more cost effective and safer to locate something that's lost with an ROV than it is to put hardhat divers in the water for the same purpose. ROV's also have a much greater depth range and time at depth than divers do for search purposes.
