Their are several reasons as to why the internet light on the Embarq DSL modem is not coming on. One is the modem maybe in whats called Bridge modem. Which means it just translating DSL signal to a signal your PC can understand. The Firewall and routing of data have been disabled. Basicly the internet light means that modem is hold a ip address for the internet.

Other possiable issue is that maybe issue with Embarq Network.

In some point you can be able to open your laptop and choose a specific network, but 2 internet providers in a house, sounds like you don't like the speed of the provider in your home and want to connect to the wireless your neighbor has. Very High Bitrate Digital Subscriber Line or VDSL/VHDSL is an improved version of the technology, ADSL or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, which we use to connect to the internet. Most VDSL subscribers are companies who need a very fast server and would often place their own servers in very close proximity.

As long as you have an ethernet jack on the laptop, it can handle any internet connection.

You'll need a router to hook up more than one computer to the internet and there's a wireless and wired way to do that. With a wireless router you'll hook it up to your modem and it will broadcast a wireless network which you will be able to log onto anywhere in the house. With the other option you will have to run a cable to the computer that isn't located next to the modem. Now assuming that the two computers are towers, they probably won't have a wireless card and won't be able to connect wirelessly unless you go to your local electronics store and buy one. At my house it wasn't a big deal to run the cables through the walls, and we use a Microsoft base station. It works good and requires no set up, all you have to do is plug it in. With wireless it can be a little bit difficult to set up, depending on the router, and they're also more expensive (I've also never purchased the wireless antennae for a computer but would expect it to cost not too far under $100 [you'll only need one]). If you have a laptop this is certainly the way to go, since you'll be able to access the internet anywhere in the house. My suggestion if you go wireless is to have someone you know who's 'computer savy' to help set it up.

Yes you can because the modem router has a modem built in. There are different types of modem routers that suit different needs. If you are only going to be surfing the web you will need a "N" modem router, if you are going to be sharing files then you will need a "N+" modem router and if you are going to be gaming e.g. connecting to a Xbox 360 or PlayStaion 3 you will need a "N+N" modem router, I would personally recommend Belkin modem routers.
