How many branches of toxicology?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Toxicology is commonly classified into three branches:

• Descriptive Toxicology: This field studies and describes the adverse effects of numerous chemicals on living beings. It entails determining the many types of toxins, their origins, and how they influence the body.

• Mechanistic Toxicology: This branch of toxicology studies how harmful compounds interact with the body at the cellular and molecular levels. It seeks to understand the mechanisms by which toxins create harm and how the body responds to these negative effects.

• Regulatory Toxicology: Regulatory toxicology is the development of rules and regulations to regulate and restrict harmful substance exposure. To protect human health and the environment, this section works to develop safety standards, allowable levels of exposure, and guidelines for the use of chemicals.

These are the three basic branches of toxicology, to know about these branches in detail and explore other branches of toxicology, students can opt for an online course - Forensic Medicine and Toxicology for UnderGrads.

This course was developed and is delivered by the best faculty and one of the most eminent authors, Dr Gautam Biswas, who is known for his books "Review of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology", "Recent Advances in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology volume-1 and 2", and "Manual of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology".

All components of the course are covered in lectures and are presented in an engaging manner. The course provides concise and simple text, as well as flowcharts, animations, short films, and infographics to help students better understand the ideas.

Can humans die if they swallow a drop of cat shampoo?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I don't think that you need to worry, cats lick themselves so a shampoo developed for cats should not be harmful if ingested. However, the shampoo bottle should tell you if it is harmful to humans and if so tell you what to do if you swallow any....it is always a good idea to read the instructions and warnings on bottles!

What is the best medicine for a runny nose?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

drink plenty of water and that's it

AnswerAvoid allergy aggravators such as sodium benzoate, which is found in some soft drinks. Limit the sweets. Get the best air filter you can. Learn about yeast/candida overgrowth and how to prevent it with diet, and add in a little yogurt to the diet. When the problem is really bad, try eating a quarter of a leaf of sage, and about 1/8 a teaspoon of turmeric. Try to have a least one glass of freshly squeezed lemonade a day.

Allergies are immune responses, which are wearing your immune system down. My suggestions will help you to maintain a healthy immune system so that you stay stronger, and get sick less often.

The old saying about apples is true. They are almost the perfect health fruit, and you should have at least one a day. Clean it carefully and make sure the PLU number on the fruit sticker does not read 3 or 8 -- which means it was genetically modified.

Drink alot of water, blow your nose reguarly and have a lot of fruit i would recommend apples hope this helps

What is the good effect of baking soda on human health?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Adding small amounts of baking soda to your fluids will help you to regain an alkaline body. Alkalinity boosts your immune system and does not allow diseases to live. For instance, Cancer cannot live at a PH of 8.0.

It can also be used in brushing your teeth if you cannot get hold of some non-fluoridated toothpaste. Natural toothpaste is becoming much more common and is now available at some Walmart stores, and all of them so far contain some baking soda.

3 tsp of unpasteurized apple cider vinegar in water 3x per day will keep your body alkaline.

What is the best way to get over a terrible hangover?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Avoiding hangoversHangovers are caused to some degree by congeners, which are natural byproducts of alcohol fermentation and give many types of alcohol their flavor. Alcoholic drinks like brandy and red wine contain more conogers than white wine and vodka. Darker ale gives you a worse hangover than lighter beers, because they tend to have more conogers and impurities. The congeners can cause nausea and constrict blood vessels which cause headaches. The prickly pear juice cancels out the effects of congeners.

The simplest way to avoid a hangover is don't drink. The next simplest is don't ever drink to excess.

If consuming alcohol it's a good idea to drink lots of water after you finish drinking. Alcohol dehydrates the body and causes headaches. Also, drinking prickly pear juice, which tastes much like watermelon, a few hours before you start drinking is said by some to help prevent them.

Better quality spirits tend to have fewer impurities, one of the major causes of hangovers.

There are currently 32 alleged hangover remedies being sold in the U.S. Chaser, Rebound, and similar brands are widely advertised and sales are growing rapidly. Most products are made of so-called natural substances and escape regulation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Therefore consumers have no guarantee as to the purity, contents, strength, or quality of these products.

But more important is the fact that these products have not been able to demonstrate that they actually prevent or even reduce hangovers. This is clearly a case of buyer beware.

Another serious problem with these alleged hangover remedies is that they may encourage people to drink more than they should. Excessive alcohol consumption is harmful to health and is often associated with undesirable social outcomes. Think of a hangover as nature's way of telling us that we consumed too much.

Can watermelon be eaten on a clear liquid diet?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, you cannot eat watermelon on a clear liquid diet. The diet consists only of clear liquids, such as plain gelatin, fat free consomme, water, broth, etc. Clear means anything that you can see through. The principle is that these things are easily digested and leave no undigested residue in the intestinal tract.

Does cranberry juice have the same benefits as cranberry pills or capsules?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Cranberry Concentrate Unsweetened, Tree Of Life or Hain's brand is my secret weapon for bladder infections. Cranberry juice or frozen cranberry concentrate is NOT the same thing. This concentrated stuff is often not on the juice shelf. It may be in with the nutritional supplements. Cranberry juice in general (concentrated or juice) makes the inside of the bladder wall slicker so bacteria can't stick to it. It also helps to tighten urethral sphincter muscles so you don't dribble-a very annoying problem as many of you already know! You'd have to drink a couple of gallons of Cranberry juice off the shelf to get the same affect as just two tablespoons of this stuff. Plus, you'd be ingesting so much sugar that if your bladder infection had anything to do with yeast, the sugar would feed it. I put this concentrated stuff in a shot glass, down it, and then chase it with an ounce or two of plain water. The chaser turns the acrid flavor instantly sweet and is therefore more tolerable. Repeat the treatment for about a week. If that doesn't do the trick, you are on the wrong track. Note: I've noticed that the cranberry capsules are not near as effective as the concentrate. Other ways to use the stuff are to put some in your smoothies every once in a while as a preventative. I also purchase a couple extra bags of fresh cranberries during this time of the year to store in the freezer so I can toss a handful of them into my smoothies occasionally as a preventative.

What is yew used for in medicine?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The wood of the yew, because of its toughness, has always been suited for abuse-prone posts and furniture. Yet, yew played a much more important role in history.

The formidable English military weapon of the Middle Ages -- the longbow -- was made of yew. In fact the law decreed only royal longbowman could have yew bows. Commoners had to settle for ash and elm. At times, yew became scarce, and the English had to import their bow wood from Spain and Italy. At the Battle of Crecy on August 26, 1346, the English devotion to yew longbows became well-justified. The rapid-firing longbowmen destroyed the French cavalry and carried the day.

Although the wood of Pacific yew has been used for furniture and handicrafts, for many years this species was considered an impediment to the harvest of larger timber trees. Therefore, many stands were indiscriminately cut down. More recently an extract of the bark of this species was found to yield a compound (taxol) that is a potent drug for the treatment of certain types of cancer. Unfortunately, the plants grow slowly and must be some 100 years old before the bark is harvest able. This has led to the destruction of more wild populations but also to a search for related species of the genus Taxus that might contain taxol.

One of the properties the tree is used for:

The chemotherapy drug paclitaxel, used in breast, ovarian and lung cancer treatment, is derived from Taxus brevifolia. As it was already becoming increasingly scarce when its chemotherapeutic potential was realized, the Pacific Yew was never commercially harvested from its habitat in the large scale; the widespread use of the paclitaxel was enabled when a semi-synthetic pathway was developed from extracts of cultivated yews of other species. Unlicensed pharmaceutical production use of closely-related wild yew species in India and China may be threatening some of those species.

Does peppermint oil repel mice?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Perhaps, though most likely not. Peppermint oil repels insects.

I've lived 20 years in an old farm house surrounded by hay fields, deer woods, and cattle. I've battled field mice, and pack rats, the entire time I've lived here.

I hear about peppermint oil on cotton balls via television and thought it was worth a try. I started with the drawer under my oven, cleaned it really good

with hot soapy water and towel dried it. Took four cotton balls and dabbed peppermint oil on each of them and placed them in each corner of the drawer.

A few days later I located a pack rat nest in another drawer in the kitchen and I cleaned it and put four peppermint oil dabbed cotton balls, one in each corner and shut the drawer.

That was two weeks ago. I checked the drawers today for the first time since placing the peppermint oil dabbed cotton balls in them. No sign of mice at all! It's winter time and mice move in for the winter every winter. Thing winter they may be moving our permanently! The peppermint oil also kills off the horrible smell left behind by the mice. If in fact peppermint oil does repel insects, I pray it works for brown recluse spiders. I'll keep an eye out for those also come spring. I'll loving the stuff and plan to grow my own peppermint and make my own oil. Brig Gen

How do you bypass k9?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The best workaround is one of the simplest, it contains just 2 steps

1) Get to the screen telling you that K9 is not responding. If you are an administrator, just find the service and stop it. If you're not, just mess around with the installation until it shows you this screen (the registry might be a good place to go, otherwise just delete some files from C:\Program Files\Blue Coat K9 Web Protection).

2) Navigate to a HTTPSsite of your choice. https://facebook.com , https://www.youtube.com/ or https://www.google.com might be good places to start. If the site you want to go on doesn't support https, simply use a https proxy (google it). If it tells you that K9 is not responding you've probably gone to a normal http site. It will ONLY work with HTTPSsites.

Tested on Windows 7 (x64) running K9 web protection 4.2.89 on 02/05/2011

What is leeching?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Leeching was an often proscribed treatment in the 1800's. Doctors thought it would cure you of "bad blood". So, they would give you a leech and you were to let it suck your blood several times a day. Once the leech is done (after it looses its grip because it is so full) you put it back in the jar. The doctors were all wrong though the leeches were sucking the good, vital blood not, the bad blood. David Barton (Clara Barton's older brother) was proscribed leeching after he fell from the rafters of a barn and had continuous fevers and headaches.

What role does the placebo effect have in alternative medicine?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A placebo effect happens when you are in a study. Someone conducting the study will divide the people into two groups: one getting real treatment and one getting fake treatment. An example might be some people are really getting pills for their disorder while others are just getting sugar pills or something that wouldn't help or harm them. The catch is that people do not know that they are not getting real treatment. Because they think that they are getting treatment, they are feeling better. It is sort of like when your mom kisses your boo-boo. It is an example of mind over matter.

More input

Sometimes doctors will give placebos to patients when they think that the patient's symptoms are psychosomatic (meaning that it is all in their head). This is illegal but a doctor in an ER once did this to me anyway.

More input

A placebo is used as a control in clinical trials, to compare the effectiveness of a new drug or intervention with one known to have no direct medical effect. This is necessary because in some conditions expecting an improvement in symptoms may actually precipitate such an improvement, and this bias must be excluded from analysis of the intervention being tested.

Prescribing a placebo during clinical trials without the patient's consent is illegal

Example: Placebo analgesics (for example a cream containing no active ingredients) can reduce pain induced by cutaneous administration of capcasin (which induces pain via TRPV1 channels)

More input

Placebo is equally there in all systems of medicine, including conventional. Here's an everyday example: when you take an aspirin or paracetamol or whatever for a headache, you might find yourself feeling a little better almost immediately. THAT is placebo; the pill will not have reached the target area that quickly, but a mental trick has occurred.
It refers to the effect of the mind, and feeling a result mainly because you think you will. Placebos are fake pills given to people to make them think they are taking actual pills; because the person thinks they are taking a pill, they may actually feel (or at least think they feel) the effects that they expect from the pill.
placebo affect is also known as the sugar pill affect. It means that you are given something that you think will work, and mentally you make it work, but in reality, what you were given had no effects

What Natural remedies are for flu?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The best treatment for the common flu is to start the moment you feel the flu coming on. For the first day, rest, take vitamin C, zinc** and an over the counter fever reducer like ibuprofen, aspirin (not for children 14 or under due to Reye's syndrome) or acetaminophen (use only as directed, can be liver toxic). Use zinc every four hours to a maximum of four (4) zinc tablets in one day. If the flu has not gotten remarkably better the next day, repeat the dosages and timing for all.

By the third day you should be up and around and in the recovery phase. At which time you take Vitamin C and zinc twice a day (morning and night) until the symptoms are gone. Once the flu is gone, stop taking the zinc.

To help maintain a healthy immune system, it is advisable to eat well, exercise regularly, get enough sunlight and in the flu season supplement your diet with extra vitamin C and echinacea. Follow the instructions for taking echinacea.

**Recent studies have shown that the zinc lozenges are more effective than taking oral zinc supplements for colds or flu, it is believed that it helps prevent the viruses from attaching as easily to the cells of the mucous tissue (this is how the viruses invade our bodies) since the lozenges coat the mucous tissue directly. Follow label directions.
