They can be incredibly manipulative, and can do great damage before those around them realize what they're doing.
There isn't much that can be done to help this kind of bully, because it is bullying. If you find yourself involved with such a person your best option is to go very fast in the opposite direction. Otherwise, the chances are that one way or another, you will be hurt, and perhaps also those you love.
Professional help can be successful with people who cause damage for pleasure, or out of some misguided need to hurt, but they must want to change. Don't try to change them yourself, and don't believe everything they say.
