What are these 4 legged insects mentioned in Leviticus 11v21?

I would guess you're referring to the KJV Bible's translation. In the last part of the verse you see the 4 legs are referred to above the "feet, to leap withal upon the earth" One answer I have heard is the Hebrew word root word used has several meanings; one suggestion is that this word translated above refers to on top of (in addition) to the leaping feet. If this is the case then the question is faulty because the verse refers to insects with 4 walking legs in addition to those used for leaping. For example the locust walks on 4 and uses the other 2 primarily for jumping.

Are there scorpions in Iowa?

Not natively. However, there are pseudoscorpions. Pseudoscorpions are a common arachnid closely related to scorpions, mites, ticks and spiders, but they usually go unnoticed because of their small size. When they are noticed is when they accidentally invade homes and wander into sight. They are not a household pest because they cannot bite or sting and they do not attack the house structure, furniture or occupants. They may be an annoying nuisance, usually during the spring and summer, as an occasional "accidental invader." Only rarely are they a chronic pest problem. Like other arachnids, pseudoscorpions have 8 legs. In addition, they have a pair of enormous pincers (called pedipalps) on the front of the body that gives them a strong resemblance to the true scorpions. Unlike scorpions, pseudoscorpions are very small, usually less than 5 mm long, and they have no sting on the end of their flat, oval abdomens. Natural habitats for pseudoscorpions include under leaf litter and mulch, in moss, under stones and beneath tree bark. They have also been reported in bird nests and between siding boards of buildings. Because they are sometimes found among books, they are also known as "book scorpions." Pseudoscorpions are predaceous and therefore beneficial. They feed on other arthropods, particularly small insects and mites. Special treatments for control of pseudoscorpions are usually not warranted. Only in a persistent infestation should control be attempted. It would be difficult to prevent all invasion by pseudoscorpions but sealing gaps, cracks and other points of entry may help exclude them.

Some fleas may be black, but not all. There are about 2000 known species of fleas, and the specific species would have something to do with the color.

How do you protect against chiggers?

The best product to use on the bite is

chigger bite ointment. This ointment will take the "itch"

away and promote healing. Since

chiggers will readily climb over clothing to

get to your flesh, use permethrin concentrate on shoes and pants. Permethrin is odorless, easy

to mix and works well at keeping many pests

away. Mix some up in a small spray bottle for

spraying while afield. Be sure to use it on shoes

and pants to keep them off and apply as needed.

Though the aerosol is easy to use, the concentrate

will prove to be more cost effective if you will

be using a lot. As an added measure, you should

treat your skin with some repellent as well. This

way if the chiggers some how get past your clothes,

they won't want to stick around on your treated

skin. There are many repellents for use one your

skin but the best is either citronella lotion

or deet . Citronella has long been used as a general

insect repellent and though not too effective

when dispersed in the air, it does a good job

as a contact repellent. This lotion can be applied

as frequently as needed and won't pose a hazard

to anyone that wants some type of protection. If

the chiggers are really bad and you want the

strongest protection available, the Deet would

be the best choice. It will last longer then the

Citronella and will work better overall.

What would happen if we didn't have wasps?

"As a group, wasps provide extraordinarily important ecological services, including pollination, predation, and parasitism. Put simply, without wasps we would be overrun with insect pests, and we would have no Fig Newtons.

I suspect, however, that you weren't thinking about things like fig wasps when you started wondering why we need wasps. You were probably aggravated by the yellowjackets hanging around your garbage cans, or terrified by the huge hornets' nest you just discovered in the shrub near your pool.

We take notice of the social wasps because they build visible nests, often close to our own homes, and because they will defend these nests aggressively.

Hornets and paper wasps prey on other insects, and help keep pest insect populations under control. It takes a lot of bugs to feed a hungry brood. Both hornets and paper wasps provide vital pest control services.

The University of Florence researchers found that wasps and hornets feed on late season grapes, which are rich in wild yeast. The yeast survives the winter in the stomachs of hibernating queen wasps, and is passed on to their offspring when the mother wasps regurgitate food for their young. The new generation of wasps carries the yeast back to the next season's grapes. So raise your glass to the wasps and hornets!

Yellowjacket don't get quite as much credit for being beneficial, although they should. Yellowjackets mostly scavenge dead insects to feed their offspring.

We do need these services, too, of course. What would the world be like if all the dead bugs just piled up? Unfortunately, their scavenging habits and their love of sugar puts them in close proximity to people, which almost never ends well for the yellowjacket or the person."
