There are those countries whose culture and religious doctrine adhere to arranged marriages, a few of those now offer legal recourse for person's who choose not to do such. In the U.S. no person can be forced to marry someone not of their choosing, or indeed marry at all, regardless of the family's cultural or religious background.
Peter Barton is currently living in a small town in upstate, NY. He is the proud FATHER of a 5 yr. old youngster. He was involved with a WOMAN who gave birth to the little girl and they had a lawyer resolve all monies and shared custody upon the dissolution of their relationship. I dated him myself and he is not, nor ever has been a woman. That is vile that someone would make fun of, not only Peter, but the trans community this way.
And P.S. he was in a longstanding relationship with Lisa Rinna and, by the way.....He was engaged :)

Why does the state have to be involved in a Christian marriage?
In the United States marriage is a civil legal status. It is controlled by civil laws. Marriage brings with it a host of legal rights and responsibilities bestowed by law. Certain parties are permitted by the state to officiate at a wedding including judges, clergy, justices of the peace, deacons and in most states any other person who requests a one-day permit such as the mother of the groom.
A couple must obtain a civil marriage license in the state where they want to be married. Without a valid marriage license there can be no legal marriage even if it is performed by clergy.
How can you stay married to someone you cannot trust?

Can anyone obtain a license to perform marriages?
(in the US) It can depend on which state you reside in. All state's laws address this in a differing fashion.
Generally, not just anyone will be authorized to perform marriages. Virtually all state laws provide that any recognized member of the clergy have authority to perform marriage. However, in some states the clergy needs to be licensed. California allows anyone to apply for authority to perform a marriage ceremony in special cases, for family or friends, and that type of authority is only good for one day. Most states allow public officials such as Justices of the Peace and judges to marry couples and some jurisdictions authorize ship captains.
