Debates as to whether alcohol abuse is biologically determined or culturally influenced are most relevant to the issue of?

Answer

Alochol abuse has been discussed til it's nearly dead and you will find if you research it enough that most alocholics believe it's heriderity that causes them to be alocholics. Passed down through a family member who drank and it doesn't necessarly have to be immediate family it could be an aunt or Uncle. Most alochoics that I've talked to and there have been many as I too am an Alocholic believe that our sickness has nothing to do with Culture. For example, some Nationalities of people drink wine with every meal, that doesn't make them alocholics as when they leave the table they don't usually drink anymore. I don't know what your definition of an Alocholic is, but my definition is someone who absolutely craves alochol and it doesn't mean that they have to buy it in a corner store, it could be shoe polish as that contains wood alochol or it could be shaving lotion if the abuser wants to drink bad enough he or she will drink anything that has alchol in it including some cough medicines.

How do you leave your abusive husband when you have three boys to look after and are afraid your husband will go nuts and will he get the house and cars if you leave?

Definitely seek help from the Battered Wives Hotline. These are trained prof. who are experienced in these situations and know exactly how to help! People donate all kinds of things to help women in your exact situation. Things from financial help, right down to legal help. They even have prof. to help the children through this difficult situation. Consult them first and ask for their guidance. Answer Great idea! I think that you now realize you cannot make the changes you need to alone. Giving up the need to be in charge and to solve it yourself is useful, since you may not be feeling the best about yourself at the moment. Find a good, solid person who has lived through this and follow their advice. Do not "yes, but" any of their advice. Just follow it to the best of your ability.

The kids are important and you definitely want to set an example for them that abuse is not acceptable--you don't want them to get caught in the cycle for their lives. Find a safe place, get child support in place and then worry about the split. What you want is to be financially independent so that he cannot control your life.

Some things you can do are to get a job, start putting money aside and find a place to live that you can afford. The house and cars are just stuff. A private bank account, and post office box are integral to your success. Be careful about acting at all different while you are doing this and don't let the kids know until you are ready to fly--your chances of being harmed increase the closer you get to leaving. BTW, I did this a number of years ago and did not ever look back. Life is so much better!

How might you reconise signs of mental and physical abuse and how would you react to them?

It depends... Is it yourself or someone else you are referring to? Physical abuse can be very apparent. Mental abuse on the other hand is harder to recognize. It's all in how it effects you personally. You can get into a verbal fight with someone and if there words effect you in such a manner where emotional pain or suffering occurs, without and real motive or backing behind it,it is definitely a sign of mental abuse.

What are the psychological reasons why some people talk louder than others and?

I don't asume that there is a psychological reason that some do talk louder. I myself happen to be one of those people and it seems my sister is that way also,my two brothers are not. It could be do to the pitch of the voice as I am a alto. My sister and I were always being told to tone it down by my mother and grandmother as kids.

What to do if your husband hits you not often but every blue moon and you love him but want him to leave?

Unless you provoke him to hit you (which still isn't ok) then you should leave him. Theres no excuse for anyone hitting you, theres no disease out there that 'forces' them to hit you. The old saying "if you love something let it go" would be the best time to act it out.

--

Darling, there is no excuse in the world for a man to hit a woman, unless the woman is buffed, a tomboy, tattooed, and kicks her husbands butt as well.

If he doesnt listen to reason if you explain to him that you are NOT to be hit.. that you love him, but cant take it anymore, the answer is simple, ask your friends, im sure they would back you up, then if you really want to go all the way, get a divorce, and a restraining order.

don't tell your friends because they willl just tell u want u want to hear and that ain't good but yeah if your getting sick of it and want to leave then do it its not worth it

Did your abusive mother love you?

Its odd but my mother was abusive but also showed some love. I noticed the problem after she lost the one child she wanted the most, a girl. She had three sons and always wanted to have a girl. She became cold after loosing the girl due to it being premature birth, the lungs collapsed I was told by my father. My mother was abusive toward me in many ways and took sides with my youngest sibling. I later found out she was abused by her own brother. My most horrific memory of her was around the age of five when it first started. I spilled milk while eating cookies at the dinner table and she became enraged at cleaning it up and made me extremely nervous by her behavior. I shook like a leaf and caused me to spill it again out of fright. Then she grasped me by the upper arm and escorted outside the front door into cold night and locked the door so I couldn't get in. I was frightened and scared and yelled and screamed(wanting my mothers love) and pounded the door to be let in. Sometime when by and I remembered crying and being frightened, when she opened the door she looked down at me and was laughing as though it was funny. I was hurt by her action and never trusted her after that day. I grew up not loving or feeling much love from her. When she was on her death bed I came to see her and she was distraught when I was there, I cried and told her I loved her before she passed away. I think she loved me but didn't show it often. This created issues, I never married for fear of being abusive myself toward a child and also feared a mother/wife because I was attracted to women who had similar characteristics of my own mother.

How can you get a narcissistic husband to stop verbally abusing his spouse to stop a conversation he does not want to hear?

First, there are many ways for an abuser to become healthy. The main solution is to decrease stress in the abuser's life by first finding the main stressors. Counseling and therapy can both catalyze the process of finding the main stressors in a persons life.

This is only a solution if the abuse isn't deadly in nature. If there is physical abuse, call the police or remove yourself from the situation immediately. However, in the case of mental abuse, it could delineate any multitude of mental diseases for the abuser, including depression or bipolarism. If talking things out with a loved one doesn't work the first time, it's time to investigate professional help.

How do you deal with negative people?

Negative people can really affect us if we react to them negatively. The key to dealing with negative people is to continue being positive and pleasant no matter how negative they get. If you do this you will not be affected by their negativity and they will either continue in their negativity alone, or realize they don't have to be that way.

"How people treat you is their karma. How you react is yours"

It is hard not to be affected by negative people. If it is at all possible, try to avoid the negative encounters from the start. If you are forced to deal with negative people, (perhaps you work in customer service), you have several options: Ignore the negativity, try to deal with the root problems causing the negativity, or deflect the negativity.

1. Ignoring the negativity. Sometimes this will help the situation, if the person feels that being negative is not helping their situation. However, depending on how it is done, it can also make things worse, as some people will feel that you are not sympathetic to their situation, before they realize that the negativity is not helping them.

2. If it is at all possible to deal with the root problems causing the negativity, it may well be worth it. Note, that this takes a lot more time than the other techniques, and if you don't have to deal with the person on a regular basis, it may not be worth it. Also, you may not necessarily have the type of relationship where you can deal with the root cause of that person's problems.

3. Deflect the negativity. Quite often, negative people can fixated on a certain aspect of life and downward spiral into negativity. If you can deflect their thoughts to a neutral or more positive topic, they may be able to avoid the downwards negativity spiral.

4. Another dealing method is humour. For example, exaggerating the negativity of a situation may help a person think, 'well it's not that bad.' Be careful with this approach as well, as some people might think you are mocking them. If they take offense, apologize immediately and strongly. Hopefully, the other person will be able to see the humour in the situation and cast aside their negativity.

The key to whatever you try is to maintain a positive attitude and not get drawn down! We all have to deal with negative people sometimes, so hopefully this advice will help deal with these situations!

What does sadistic streak mean?

It means someone who gets a kick out of hurting you. This kind of behavior does NOT have to be physical. I had a spouse who had a serious sadistic streak--and who almost never laid a hand on me, and we were together more than a decade. What he did was lie and trick me. This was, perhaps, the thing he most enjoyed doing in life. A sadistic streak could be no more physical than that. It does not mean it is not harmful to the person upon whom the sadism is being taken out.
