ok i have a 1994 ford probe 2.0, it should be the same, the alternator is behide the engine, i did it with just normal tools and didnt have to remove the cross member or half shaft, what i did is

1 remove negative terminal

2 jack the car up as far as you can

3 i unloosend the bolt that moves the alternator back and forth a little then went under and loosend the mounting bolt as much as i could

4 then i went back to the bolt that moves the alternator back and forth and took it out completely (pain in the butt bc u can only move the wrench 1/2 a turn a time, use extensions if u have)

5 remove the mounting bolts completely

6 then with the bolts out i used a hammer to remove it from the mount under neath

7 now with it free i took off the wires (thee is a nut holding the negative on pop the black cap with a flat head and remove it.

8 then i removed the mounting bracket (3 bolts)

9 then here comes the fun, i took the old alternator out by the half shaft i used a hammer and cow bar, and twist it so the pulley is facing the other pulleys (or just how eve u can)

10 to get the new one in all i did was play with it to get it over the half shaft and a little muscle to push it up in and got it.

11 then just reinstall everything.

there is 2 other ways to do it and one is remove the half shaft and that would make life simple also u can remove the crossmember and pull it out back and down by the exost pipe

it took me 2 days to figure this out so i hope it helps

the bolts are all 1/2 or 7/16

As a separate supply is required to excite field, the use is restricted to some special applications like electro-plating, electro-refining of materials etc.

But what is the difference between self excited and separately excited?

No, not unless you installed a 6 volt battery instead of a 12 volt battery.

On the Vulcan engines the alternator was same from '98 to '03.

You can test it with a simple digital DC voltmeter. Set the voltage of the meter to the 20 Volt DC scale. Start the engine and let it idle. You should read 13.5 to 15.5 Volts at the battery posts. Any less than 13 or more than 16 volts and the alternator is suspect. Best to drive it to your local auto parts store where they will inspect the charging system for free.

It varies depending on how much other electronics you are using on the vehicle at the time. Could take hours. I do not recommend you charge any dead battery with the alternator if you can avoid it. it puts too much of a strain on the alternator and may damage it. Charge a dead battery with a battery charger.

Disconnect the 1991 Regal battery. Remove the alternator belt and wiring. Unbolt the alternator and install the new one. Reconnect the wires, install the belt, then reconnect the battery.

3 bolts 2 wires

You don't have to remove the motor mounts,clock the engine,Remove the subframe or all that other garbage....Just remove the washer tank, wiper linkage,battery, & unbolt the alternator. It will just maneuver right out where the tank used to be.

you take it out and put in a new one

theres someting wrong on them i got two and i replace it on mine 2 times and 3times on my wifes car 02 zts both

Chances are you drained your battery when your alternator failed to maintain your cars regular running functions. You should take the battery to your local auto parts store, they should be able to test it for free.

Alternator needs replacing.

you probably have a short in the fuse box, check the fuses and check it again, if it's not that check the wiring from the sensor and the alternator. any of them may need replacing.
You have a short circuit under the intake manifold where the wire harness crosses over the intake support bracket. Raise the car, go under and look up on the back side of the motor - look up under the intake manifold. There is a steel support bracket and a large wire harness just above it. the wires have rubbed on the bracket and worn through their insulation. Lift the wires back and tape everything up. It isn't even expensive to fix!!!

On another type of vehicle that I had, I removed the alternator and found a data plate which had the rating on it. You can never go wrong by putting a heavier duty one (140)then what is installed as it allows for more accessories to be run. Your call. Hope this is off some assistance to you.

take the belt off remember how its routed, locate alternator, locate bolt on top its a 9/16, then locate the other bolt at the exact opposite end its a 9/16 also pull the plugs when you put it in make sure battery is FULLY CHARGED

The battery light comes on when the alternator is either over or under charging. If the alternator tested good you have a wiring or computer problem. The engine computer is the voltage regulator.

The alternator is on the top left corner of the engine as you are looking at it from the front.

How do you replace the alternator on a 1988 Pontiac Fiero

Should only be 2 bolts-1 at 6 & 1 at 12 o' clock. Remove those & wires from back (disconnect batt first) & just R&R. Belt has to come off first. Alt will swing sideways once you loosen top bolt or if serpentine, just pry on idler to get slack with pry bar. If serpentine, make sure you have routing diagram (or note) before removal.

If the car won't start, jump it off. While it is running, remove the positive cable from the battery. If the car dies, then your alternator is bad. If it keeps running then you may have a bad battery.

If you smell a burning smell, or your red battery light comes on then i would get your alternator checked out!

Disconnect the battery, then remove the alternator belt on the Regal. Unhook the alternator wiring and bolts, then remove it. Installation of the new unit is reverse of the procedures.
