All Humanists emphasize caring for their fellow humans. This is what makes them better than any other religions, serving others instead of a god (all are imaginary.)

How was Atheism viewed in Victorian England?

Victorian England is known for its public displays of religious commitment, with strict enforcement of public morals, although often compromised by private hypocrisy. For most people it was not sociably acceptable to be seen as an atheist. The few who considered the question would mainly have kept their views to themselves. During the nineteenth century, academics were beginning to question the assumptions in the Bible and question the existence of God. However their research was largely unknown to those outside academia, leaving the general population too uninformed to seriously consider the possibility of atheism as a belief or non-belief system. As yet, atheism was not really an issue. === === Large sections of the working class in Victorian England were indifferent to religion. There were several missionary campaigns by various Christian denominations directed at this group. To some extent, church attendance became a badge of respectability.

When a man testified in court in ancient rome what did he swear on instead of a bible?

Swearing on a Bible is a quite modern concept. A Roman man (women could not go to court except in very special circumstances) placed his right hand on his testicles, while swearing by the gods he believed in, and affirmed he would tell the truth; hence the term 'testimony'.

What the meaning of own cross to bare?

It refers to a burden that one has to carry on their own. It doesn't always mean that it is a physical burden, it may be a psychological burden. It isn't something that can be shared or off loaded. It is a reference to the Biblical account that Jesus Christ carried his own cross. But he wasn't able to and was helped to carry it. The correct spelling is bear, not bare.

What is something to say to a person who does not believe in God?

Nothing, unless they are open to discussion.

There are tens of proofs for God's existence. These have been recorded for centuries and are easy to look up. However, this subject ultimately becomes one of personal belief, since our possession of free-will mandates that it be possible to put forth arguments (fallacious or not) against every one of the proofs.
Here are a few.
1) Teleological Argument: The universe has definite design, order, and arrangement which cannot be sufficiently explained outside a theistic worldview. (This is how Abraham, without benefit of teachers, came to reject the chaotic world-view of idolatry and the possibility of atheism). For example, theoretical physicist and popular science writer Paul Davies (whose early writings were not especially sympathetic to theism) states concerning the fundamental structure of the universe, "the impression of design is overwhelming" (Davies, 1988, p. 203).From the complexities of the human eye to the order and arrangement of cosmology, the voice of God is heard. God's existence is the best explanation for such design. God is the designer. Is there evidence against Evolution

God's wisdom seen in His creations

More about God's wisdom

2) Anthropic Principle: The laws of the universe seem to have been set in such a way that stars, planets and life can exist. Many constants of nature appear to be finely tuned for this, and the odds against this happening by chance are astronomical. Professor Russel Stannard (a particle physicist) states: "The universe has been bent over backwards in order that intelligent life should exist...must have known we were coming."

3) Sensus divinitatus: The innate sense of the divine exists within all people. People and cultures of all time have, by instinct, sensed a need to believe in and worship something greater than themselves. No ancient society ever existed that did not believe in a supernatural power.

4) Tradition: There are historical events which cannot be explained without God. Many people have had personal experiences that turn them toward theism, but there are also historical events such as the Giving of the Torah to over two million people at Mount Sinai, which are underpinnings for the belief in God.

5) Pascal's Wager: Belief in God is the most rational choice due to the consequences of being wrong. If one were to believe in God and be wrong, there would be no consequences. However, if one were to deny God and be wrong, the consequences are eternally tragic. Therefore, the most rational choice is not agnosticism or atheism, but belief in God.

6) Logic. Why is there reality rather than nothing? Aside from God's creating it, there are only five options:
a) The universe is eternal and everything has always existed.
- Even atheists have abandoned this possibility, especially because it would violate the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

b) Nothing exists and all is an illusion. There is no reality; there is only nothing.
- This possibility, it should be obvious, is completely self-defeating. In order to even make such a proposition, the subject has to exist in some sense. If all is an illusion, where did the illusion come from? Even the solipsist, who does not believe in the existence of other minds, has to explain the genesis of his own mind.

c) The universe created itself. This is the idea that the universe and all that is in it did not have its origin in something outside itself, but from within.
- Like with the previous two, this makes a logical absurdity. It would be like creating a square triangle. It's impossible. A triangle by definition cannot be square. So creation cannot create itself as it would have to pre-date itself in order to create.

d) Chance created the universe. The odds of winning the lottery are not very good; but given eons of time, everyone will win. While the odds of the universe spontaneously appearing are not minuscule, could it happen, given enough time?

- This option is a dishonest sleight of hand that, like "survival of the fittest," amounts to nothing, because it implies that "chance" itself has quantitative causal power.
The word "chance" refers to possibilities. It does not have the power to cause those possibilities. It is nonsense to speak of chance being an agent of creation, since chance is not a force. "What are the real chances of the universe being created by chance? Impossible. Chance is incapable of creating a single molecule, let alone an entire universe. Why not? Chance is no thing. It is not an entity. It has no being, no power, no force. It can effect nothing because it has no causal power within it. It is a word which describes mathematical possibilities which, by the curious flip of the fallacy of ambiguity, slips into the discussion as if it were a real entity with real power, the power of creativity." (R.C. Sproul, Not a Chance. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker, 1999.)

e) The universe is created by nothing. Simply put, nothing created the universe.
- The problem here is that it is either a repetition of option "a" (the universe is eternal) or fails due to the irrationality of "d." In our current universe, the law of cause and effect cannot be denied by sane people. While we often don't know what the cause of some effect is, this does not mean that there was no cause. When we go to the doctor looking for an explanation for the cause of our neck pain, we don't accept the answer "There is no cause. It came from nothing."

Do communists believe or not believe God?

Generally speaking, communists are atheists because communists believe in what is called a "Material History", as described by Karl Marx. This version of history sees material wealth as the central driver of history. So a rough depiction of what history has been in the eyes of a communist would be this:

1. Slavery (small number of people reap wealth with a large number of people owned and doing most of the work; an example would be ancient Greece, where captured enemy soldiers were slaves)

2. Feudalism (nobles own the land, and serfs are tied to the land; the serfs would have to give a certain percentage of their income to the nobility)

3. Capitalism (a small number of indivduals own the "means of production" - factories, investment capital, etc - while a large number are employed by them for the least amount possible)

This view of history led Marx to believe that at each stage the "underclass" was being relied upon to do more and more complex work and would have to become more and more educated. Eventually they would realize they are being subjugated and would revolt, leading to the "Worker's Paradise" (Marx's family owned many factories in Germany and the conditions of the workers left a profound impact on Marx).

Because this version of history seems divorced from a history in which God intervenes on Man's behalf, and because Marx viewed religion as oftentimes being used by elites to keep the people from realising the reality of their condition, Marx called religion the "opiate of the masses" and most communists agree with him.

Of course, as with any ideology, it is always different based upon the time and the place so it is difficult to say all communists are atheists. Christian Socialism is a form of soft communism which is not atheistic. But, in generaly, Marxist ideology embraces atheism.

Additionally, a true Marxist embraces Dialectical Materialism. The human mind is not "soul driven" . The ideas of humans are based on Marx's belief that the brain secretes thought. This is contrary to the belief in a Creator.

What kind of standards do critical thinkers rely upon to help them evaluate data to gain information that leads to knowledge?

One view: Critical thinking must be sensitive to content. It relies on certain criteria. Most important, critical thinking must be self correcting. As new reliable information is available the critical thinker is able to reflect on the issue and modify what they concluded before that new information became available, if necessary. A critical thinker is reasonable, committed to reasoning things out, and willing to rule out wrong answers. Since a conclusion must reach a high standard of reasonableness, the person must research the topic sufficiently enough to arrive at a reasonable, logical conclusion.

Since an atheist is only the position of unacceptance of god claims, they would celebrate like anyone else, such as cookouts, birthdays, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, and even Christmas since the holiday is not strictly based on any Christian dogma

Who was the atheist that tried to find contradictions in the bible but ended up converting to Christianity?

This is one of the folklore tales often put up by theists to show the power of their religion. It usually goes like this:

There was an atheist (professor, student, teenager, industrialist) who was (speaking, appearing, overheard in at a party) who (laughed at, challenged, disrespected) the Bible. At that time a (young child, senior citizen, stranger who no one had noticed before) spoke up challenging the atheist. The atheist failed to prove his point, saw the error of his ways and was born again in the Lord.

None of these events has stood up to an impartial investigation.

How can you trust an atheist to remain loyal to you in a relationship if his standard of morality is only based on his own?

an atheist's morality is not just based on his/her own. It follows the social norms of society. Our country was founded on secular attitude. We have the right to choose which god we worship, and we have the right to not believe in any god. We also have the freedom from any religion being imposed on us.

Do atheists start at a true premise to conclude that there is no God or is their conclusion their premise?

Atheists simply lack a belief in gods. Most are science based thinkers and many started out in a religious family, gradually coming to the realization that religious belief is a man-made fiction. There are many reasons to become comfortable with atheism but a common factor is fact based thinking.

Answer:

If the question were about how adults reach the conclusion that there is no monster under the bed the answer would be much the same. The adult may or may not have believed in the monster as a child, but as an adult never troubles himself to investigate it further. The realization is a process not on/off change. It is based on observation and understanding of the real world and hardly ever framed in the context of "I must examine the potential of bed monsters to satisfy my position that they do not exist."

Are Bill and Melinda Gates atheists?

Some say he is athiest, but his response here seems pretty agnostic to me. Can't speak for Melinda.

Gates was interviewed November 1995 on PBS by David Frost. Below is the transcript with minor edits.

Frost: Do you believe in the Sermon on the Mount?

Gates: I don't. I'm not somebody who goes to church on a regular basis. The specific elements of Christianity are not something I'm a huge believer in. There's a lot of merit in the moral aspects of religion. I think it can have a very very positive impact.

Frost: I sometimes say to people, do you believe there is a god, or do you know there is a god? And, you'd say you don't know?

Gates: In terms of doing things I take a fairly scientific approach to why things happen and how they happen. I don't know if there's a god or not, but I think religious principles are quite valid.
