How do you convert an atheist?

Answer

You don't. You leave them alone and respect their right to live their life as they choose to live their life. Atheism is an intellectual decision. Religious faith requires belief in the absence of proof. You have no right to argue with another person who has chosen not to have any religious aspect in their life. They have the right to please themselves, to be true to themselves, and you have no right to interfere with that process.

If you speak of family members, love them and accept their decision. Relate to them on every other level and resist trying to persuade them to "believe". Religion is an extremely personal choice. Allow them the same right you allow yourself: to make your own decision, because it is the ultimate in arrogance to think that you are the one who knows the right way to go for everyone else. You can only make that decision for yourself. Allow the atheist the same privilege you allow yourself: the right to choose their own path without any interference from you.

How many atheists are there on the planet?

As with any demographic poll of religion, and especially Atheism, there might be slight inaccuracies. Sometimes, "non-affiliated" or "Agnostic" will be considered "Atheist". And, many times, atheists are afraid to identify themselves. That being said; according to Wikipedia sources and a 2002 survey by Adherents.com, estimated the proportion of the worlds people who indentify as "secular, non-religious, agnostic or atheist", at around 14%. Other polls, both official and unofficial, place the number at about 0% (Nigeria) to 39% (UK) and some as high worldwide as 52% - 72% in the west.

Who was the number one atheist?

If the question is "Who is the leader of atheists?" there is no leader. Each atheist is his own person. Atheists may meet for discussion, attend meetings by atheists who wish to talk about their point of view, but there is no leader.

If the question is "Who was the first atheist?", the answer is unknown. Atheism was the standard until religion was invented.

Where do atheist think they come from?

Atheists know where they came from: they came from their mother's womb after a nine month gestation period beginning with fertilization and ending at birth. Atheists know they are the result of their mother's egg being fertilized by their father's sperm.

How do Christians rationalize the fact that close to all the writers of the New Testament never came into contact with Jesus personally?

Christians see nothing there needing to be "rationalized."

2 Timothy 3:16, 17 - All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. [NKJV]

Because of the divine inspiration of the Holy Spirit, it was by no means necessary that all the writers of the New Testament have "personal contact" with Jesus.

Besides, the contention that "close to all the writers...never came into contact with Jesus personally" is incorrect. The only NT writer who almost certainly had no personal contact with Jesus was Luke. None of the other writers can positively be excluded. Consider:

Matthew: One of the twelve.

Mark: A disciple, possibly present when Jesus was arrested.

Luke: A Gentile convert who did NOT know Jesus "personally."

John: One of the twelve.

Paul: Experienced extensive "personal contact" with Jesus by means of visions.

The Hebrew writer: Unknown, so uncertain.

James: Probably Jesus' own half-brother. Even if not, all the prominent men named James in the New Testament knew Jesus personally.

Peter: One of the twelve.

Jude: Probably the brother of James, and another half-brother of Jesus.

What are some arguments to why God is not real?

Atheism does not mean "100% certainty that God does not exist, with no willingness to question and no room for doubt. For the overwhelming majority of people who call themselves atheists, this is not what "atheism" means. For most atheists, "atheism" means something along the lines of "being reasonably certain that there are no gods," or, "having reached the provisional conclusion, based on the evidence we've seen and the arguments we've considered, that there are no gods."

No, we can't be 100% certain that there are no gods. We can't be 100% certain that there are no unicorns, or Santas or tooth fairies either. But we're certain enough.

Answer

To date, there is simply no measurable, testable, scientifically verifiable evidence for the existence of a god. It's as simple as that.

How does an Arab atheist answer the question kif halek?

Well, if someone would say "kaifa haluk" as in formal arabic, (kif halek is a lebanese and probably also syrian Arabic pronunciation), I would answer, "bi khair, shukran lak بخير، شكرا لك", which means, "fine, thank you", or informal in many arabic dialects "kullu Tamam كلو تمام" which means "everything is fine", and I may add (winta kifak (in case of answering a male, i.e. 2nd person masculine), or winti kifik (in case of 2nd person feminine) which means "and how are you?".

Was Jesus a Historical myth - a Philosophical myth or a Poetical myth?

Jesus Christ (Joshua Bar-Joseph) is an actual historical figure. His existence has been confirmed by the historian Josephus, although it is a very tenuous reference. You have to understand that at the time of his life, Jesus was a very minor figure, just another wandering mystic, and didn't make much of an impact on the politics of his day.

AnswerThere is no historical evidence that Jesus existed. Josephus' passages are disputed (they appear to have been inserted at a later date), and in any case, he is writing about heresay: not about his personal experiences. His books are dated at about the same time as the early Gospels, at a time when the stories were in wide circulation anyway.

There are no contemporary reports of Jesus: everything that has survived was written well after the events they document. They bear a startling resemblence to other myths of the time: of Horus, of Mithras, and of Krishna.

The stories concerning all four are certainly philosphical in nature, but it is doubtful that any have more than a grain of historical truth in them.

Since he was a historical figure, he was a historical fact, not any kind of myth.

Answer

I think we can safely elevate Jesus christ's status to that of a legend, at the very worst.

Which disciple of Jesus was a murderer?

Based on Acts chapter 5, this would be Simon Peter. Another point of view would be that God took the lives of Ananias and Saphira, and that Peter was only an accessory. Either way he was not innocent, and the only defence we can offer is that the events of chapter 5 did not really happen.

How many atheists live past 100?

There are no published stats on record to answer this question.

In a way it ignores the big issue of atheism.

The real issue is, how many atheists experience life past death at any age.

Atheists cheerfully say 'None'. Though is is hard to prove.

Atheists live, of course, for a very similar timespan to other people, thus the proprtion who live to such an age shall be similar to people of other beliefs.

I suspect, having said this, that there would be some correlation between atheism and longevity, as atheists tend to some from richer, better educated backgrounds, and thus are more likely to live healthy lifestyles wqith better healthcare. However, this effect is probably not huge. I would be interested to see a study into the matter. == I, too, would be fascinated by a study. All the studies I have seen indicate that the more educated a person is, the more likely they are to be atheist. Since the wealthier sections of society tend to be more educated (because education costs money), it is reasonable to infer that atheists are likely to live longer. This would not be because they are atheist, but would have the same root cause as their education: they are more likely to have come from a wealthy background, and have a higher standard of living, and better access to healthcare.

Was Hemingway an athiest?

No. He was not. Two works of note that address Hemingway's catholicism seem to suggest that he took his Roman Catholic faith more seriously than modern critics and biographers suggest. The authors are H.R. Stoneback and Matthew Nickel. A quick google of their name and Hemingway will give you a jumping point for any research. They both provide clear evidence that refutes the "conversion of convenience" theory that he converted just for the sake of this marriage. That said, no one would suggest, not even Hemingway, that he was a good example of a good catholic. As a devout catholic myself, I would hardly consider myself a good example either, but this does not diminish my faith or my identity as a catholic. In addition to the authors noted above, there are numerous articles online discussing Hemingway's faith that are worth reading.
