Random cylinder misfire

It depends on which emission you have (Fed, Calif). But usually there are two of them. One is located in the exhaust manifold (this one dies faster than another one), another one is in the exhaust pipe just under the passenger seat.

When the check engine light or MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is blinking approximately once every second it is indicating what is called a Type A Misfire. A misfire occurs when one or more cylinders is not contributing to the power output of the engine. Type A misfires are damaging to the catalytic converter on the vehicle and are therefore deemed very harmful. Misfires can be caused by a variety of things but can generally be classified into one of three categories: Fuel, Ignition, Base Engine. Fuel could be a malfunctioning injector for example. An ignition example could be a spark plug that is not firing due to a bad ignition coil. A base engine example could be a bent connecting rod or a hole in a piston. Catalytic converters can be quite expensive to replace so might want to get it repaired sooner rather than later.

The check engine light comes on when the ECU detects a problem with the emissions system on the vehicle. Have the ECU scanned to retrieve the code that has been set. The code will tell you where to start looking.

That requires an OBDII engine scanner to do that. But if you haven't fixed the problem that made it come on in the first place then it will just come back on.

You need to have the engine scaned and read the codes.

Sometimes it can take a day or two, but if you're sure a loose gas cap is why it went on, don't worry about it - it will go out.

Probably a misfire condition, however you will need to hook up a scanner to read the codes.

Code P1684 simply means the battery was disconnected within the last 50 key starts. Either turn the key another 50 times with the battery connected, or use an OBD scanner to wipe the code.

Chances are is a corroded wire in the wheel speed sensor wires or your front wheel bearing which is a common problem for the rendezvous

Service Reset:

1)Push-hold Trip Button (TB)

2)Turn key to position 1

3)Continue to hold (TB), the number 15A will show to the teft of the milage

4)Release (TB) for 3 sec and then hold (TB) again

5)In about 5-8 sec RST will show in the left corner

6)Release and then hold again "15000" will show, press and release

7)Car is now reset to the 15,000 service - (has completed 10,000 mile service) and will count down from 15,000.

When the service engine soon light is blinking, it means a subsystem of the engine has failed. It could be something as simple as a broken gas cap, or it could be a serious engine problem. If the Explorer is still running fine, it is best to get the codes read at an auto service shop to determine the next course of action.

its refering to the oxygen sensors, there are 2 of them, bank 1 is the upstream and its below the exaust manifold flanges, above the catalitic converter

There is air escaping from the gas tank. Often a problem with the gas cap, try tightening the cap, reset the code and see if it comes back on. Essentially it is testing for cracks in the tank.

Check engine is an error. You have to go at a garage to see what is the error code, then correct the problem.

If it's misfiring AND running lean I'd suggest checking for a vacuum leak. Check the gasket between the manifold and the head, then check the EGR valve and make sure all of the vacuum lines are in good condition. Also verify that the power brake vacuum assist is in good condition and not leaking. A damaged power brake diaphragm can cause the engine to run quite lean.

There are pages and pages and items that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked for codes with a scan tool. After repair light can be shut off with scan tool.

You start by having it checked for codes. The light comes on because the computer has detected a fault. You need to know the code to know what to repair.
