No, it is not illegal to reset the light. It is however illegal to remove the bulb so the light will not come on or to in any other way prevent the light from working as it should. If you do not repair the problem that caused the check engine light to come on in the first place it will just come back on after it is reset.

First, before anything else, check your engine oil level. If that is okay, take it to your dealer or a local auto parts supplier and see if they will scan the codes for you to find out what is wrong. If the oil level is low, add oil to the full mark and check again. If it stays on, go to the dealer or the parts place as stated above.

Go to autozone.com type in oxygen sensor and it will allow you to pull up a diagram of all o2 sensors

That depends on a number of things. Location, size, etc... gas vapors require a spark or very high heat/pressure to ignite, and those things can absolutely happen. The likelyhood of the fuel in the tank igniting due to the leak is probably low because of the high volatility of gasoline and the required amount of air required to ignite it, but ultimately, no one including myself will tell you it's safe for liability reasons. fyi, motorcycle gas tanks vent to the atmosphere (aka leak vapors).

There are dozens and dozens of causes for the check engine light to stay on. You need to have the computer checked for codes to know possible causes.

There is a problem on the engine or transmission. One of the sensors sends a code to the computer and this code is store into the memory. You can use this information to fix the problem

To find the errror you have to turn the ignition on and off 3 times.

Chrysler calls this key dance ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON.

The code with the problem will be display on the cluster.

Write it down and check the code.

You'll need a ODBII code reader to reset the check engine. The connection is under the stearing colonm. First check the code, clear the problem and the reset the light.

what year????????????? Check engine light diagnosis depends on the model year of your vehicle. 1995 and later models have the OBDII system and require a scan tool to retrieve the trouble codes. For 1994 and earlier models, you can check out a manual (Haynes or Cilton) at your local library and read how to manually retrieve the codes - also what each code refers to.

You first have to have it checked for codes. You then repair the cause of the code. Finally you clear the code witha scan tool.

Go to Auto Zone and have the codes read free to find out what is not operating properly. If a certain thing is indicated, it doesn't mean that the part is bad, but it needs to be checked out.

The computer has detected a problem with the emissions system. Take it to a professional.

use an ODB2 code reader, copy the error code down and clear the code. look up the error code to see just what error code your computer stored and fix the problem. or just take it nto a service dept, like a dealer or pep boys who work on cars. it shouldn't cost you much to clear the code, but if ther problem is serious, it may have to be fixed or the check engine light will just come on again after clearing the code.

EGR Valve - it happened to me just after I bought my used 1997 Celica. Could be plugged or could need a new one. If you need a new one, check with different Toyota dealers. Three in my area gave me three different prices - from $125 to $88. I chose the $88.

Start at the front of the engine, where all the accessories are mounted(alternator, power steering pump, etc) then count each each spark plug from left to right in normal order. The cylinder to the left will be 1, and the cylinder to the far right will be 4. When you locate number 2 cylinder, check the plug wire for damage. remove the spark plug and inspect it for wear. A new set of spark plugs and wires will probably fix your problem. Otherwise it may me a coil pack or ignition module. Hope this helps. It means the for some reason cylinder #2 isn't firing properly. That is usually a spark plug, plug wire, or ignition coil issue. But at times, I have found that an internal problem in the cylinder, like a valve sticking. I have also had a fuel injector cause this. Commonly too, on engines with individual EGR ports, one to each cylinder, I have had restricted EGR ports do this, in a situation where all but one was restricted. I would start with the easiest and most common fix, plugs and wires, and go from there.
