How to change brakes on 2004 Chevy Cavalier?

Remember that even though you may get great or trustworthy advice from anyone, the work you do on your brakes requires that you understand the workings of the brake system servicing that system and know that the final results affect your safety and the safety of others.

Be careful! Use all Safety precautions!(ie. Gloves, Glasses,...etc.) Use tools specific to the job. If you don't have the tool you can borrow tools from many sources even from the parts store. (Warning: a borrowed tool should not be trusted with your safety, test everything before you use them) If your unsure about any procedure or technique call a shop and ask for advice from a technician, most of them will freely speak to you about anything, and if your still not sure or stuck take it in to be serviced.

The following is just going to be bits and pieces of vital information and I trust that you understand that I am not a liable or reliable source or information or training especially since I am online.

First, search the web, learn about the brake systems you are going to work on.

Here are two websites the first is a basic now you know the second gives you enough information to understand the workings of the brake system.

Ok. Now your ready you understand how important the brakes are and ow they work. Lets get started on what you need to do.

Go to the parts store. i recommend shopping around checking the parts store prices and their warrenties. Most, if not all, Parts Stores Price match everything except warrenties. And from my Own personal delight and money saving warrenty I only buy my brake pads at AutoZoneFind one near you . If you chang your pads when your supposed to they should never get to the point that the warrenty is voided on your brake pads. So, the next time you go to buy brake pads you bring in the old ones they swap them out for new ones and no money exchanged...except for the things you might need or might find while wandering around the store... If your not interested in the warrenty then still shop around i find that Kragen's,Murry's or Whatever theyre changing their name to, will beat the price of the other guys by a larger percentage than anyone else.

So Your Going to need to know something. Your going to need to know the, Year, Make, Model and Engine Size of your car. you can find out most of this on the tag inside the driverside door pannel.

Year: 2004

Make: Chevrolet

Model: Cavalier

Engine: Either this

4 Cylinders 6 2.2L Flex Fuel (found in 01% of 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier)

or more likely

4 Cylinders F 2.2L SFI DOHC (found in 99% of 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier). You can find this information on the top of your motor usually

Chances are your brakes are squeeling. This is because your pads have worn down to what is called the check plate. The Check plate is a piece of metal that drags on the brake rotor when the pads are worn down. Since brake pads are usually only on the front let us focus on them. When you get to this point you have questions email me at squiggllii@gmail.com

just to add a little something to this. i would not suggest any pads with a life time warrenty they will in most cases eat your rotors by oem brake pads they shouldn't cost no more then 15.00 to 25.00 dollars. remember this, do not forget to take the master cylinder cover off before doing any thing to the brakes. i don't know the torque on you cap screws for your caliper but ther is only 2 per caliper . another thing if you have not done brakes before do one brake at a time so you have a visual of how it is put to gether. use a chelten or a haynes book for your car it is a standard maintenance.

How do you syphon gas from a 1992 Chevy cavalier wagon?

I just attempted syphoning from my 92 Z-24. There must be water in the gas. I'm thinking of disconnecting the fuel line in the engine compartment and, pumping it out by cranking the engine..

I even went as far to shove a 1/4" hose down to the tank to n avail THEN, got under the car to take the hose clamp off that, holds the rubber pipe to the tank but, they installed the clamp so, you have to drop the tank to get it out..

Pretty frustrating :-0...

When replacing a ball joint on a Chevy Cavalier do you have to remove the control arm?

No you don't. But you might want to replace the lower bushing also since you will be half way their. Also it is easier because you have to grind off the rivets to get the ball joint off the control arm. Most garages replace the control arm because labor rates compared to the cost of a new control is less expensive for the garage and customer. Also the liablity of the new ball joint has to be bolted on and not riveted as factory unit.

What does the check engine light mean on a 2003 Chevy Cavalier that is running fine?

Very good possiblity that it's something simple, but it wouldn't be a good idea to speculate without having you first run a diagnostic scan. OBDII compliant vehicles such as yours will tell you exactly the reason for the engine light. Rent, borrow or buy a code reader that gives you the option to read and clear diagnostic codes. If it's a misfire error code you can clear it and see if it comes back. If it's something simple like a throttle position sensor, MAP sensor or Oxygen sensor you can easily solve the problem, but recognize that some of the newer Oxygen sensors might be a little expensive. Check the code first then figure out what to do to fix it. This is what happened to my wife last weekend. It was caused by the fuel cap not being on properly. Check the fuel cap and make sure that it is on securely (tighten until it makes the clicking sound). The "check engine" light will not go out right away. I think the owners manual has a section on this problem. If it's not the fuel cap, then you will need to get the code reader.

Why would tapping on a Cavalier coil assembly make it run fine when otherwise it stutters and misses and does not want to start or run correctly?

Replace the coil pack. You can buy this part at any auto part store and have a nechanic put it in for you or do it yourself if yer feelin froggy but you need a new coil assembly or new wiring and connection to it. you can also probably find a good coil assembly from a junkyard as these usually outlast the cars the reason it works when you tap on it is the coils are burining out from the inside and losing their connection. When you tap on it you cause the vibration to make the coils hit a "hot spot" as electricians call it. anyway replace the coil assembly.

When I did this on my Sunbird (same car really) I had the seats out of the car. I had to stand on the seat bottom and very quickly and firmly pull straight up on the head rest. There's no button to push or anything special you have to do. Just pull very quickly and firmly straight up....they'll pop out.
