Cyrus McCormick's reaper (for cutting grain) and John Deere's steel plow opened up the rich prairies of Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa. Although both had been invented in the 1830's, the wartime demand brought them into general use.
At his harvester plant in Chicago, McCormick was able to mass-produce reapers on an assembly line. Then, through such selling techniques as traveling demonstrations and installment buying, he placed one on nearly every midwestern farm.

What railroad was moved when the Congress Street Expressway was built?
