Cold and Flu

Questions and answers about the "Common Cold"; symptoms in the upper respiratory tract like sneezing, scratchy throat, and runny nose, but adults don't typically have fevers. Colds are usually caused by the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronaviruses (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold. Also questions about the seasonal flu, also called "regular flu", caused mostly by Type A and Type B Influenza viruses. Flu starts with similar symptoms as a cold only it hits faster and harder and usually includes fever in adults. Although the "stomach flu" is a common term, it is not a real diagnosis. The proper medical term for stomach flu is gastroenteritis (an intestinal disease, sometimes viral but also bacterial), it is often mistaken for influenza because the flu can sometimes include vomiting and diarrhea.

What types of tea are good for the flu?

Green tea would be best with some lemon added. However, because tea contains caffeine that works as a diuretic ("water pill"), only one cup should be consumed at any one sitting if you have the flu or other problems, and you should limit the total amount used in a day. Large amounts of tea should not be used when you have the flu or other problems that can cause you to become dehydrated.

There are some benefits to taking green tea with lemon when sick, it can even boost the immune system and the lemon helps your body absorb the beneficial parts of the tea as well as providing some extra vitamin C and other nutrients.

Black tea ("regular tea") is not as good for this, and it also typically has more caffeine content, so it should be avoided due to the dehydration potential.

Decaffeinated teas and herbal teas without caffeine would be better than black tea in some ways. Hot tea will provide some humid air that may make your nasal passages feel better as you sip it. Cranberry juice or apple juice warmed with lemon are other good sources of fluids that will help you feel better when sick.

Even better is mother's old remedy, chicken soup. You can buy good chicken stock at the grocery store and sip cups of it. Be sure to check the sodium (salt) content or you risk the same diuretic effects as tea. Salt-free is best. Chicken broth that is salt free (don't use the broth cubes, they have way too much salt) can also be sipped, but it will not taste as good and will have less nutrients.

Whatever you drink, as long as it has limited salt and limited caffeine, you do need to prevent dehydration with plenty of fluids and plain water should be consumed as well.

Another tried and true remedy for adults with colds and flu at bedtime, is one cup of hot water with some lemon juice, a very small amount of honey and a few tablespoons of bourbon or other alcohol (a common ingredient in cough medicines). It helps you rest and helps control coughs. The amount of alcohol should be limited because it also has diuretic properties.

For children, you can make the same drink without the alcohol, but they will benefit most from juices, water, and chicken soup.

Antibiotics are used to treat viral infections like the flu True or False?

Antibiotics kill bacteria. Antivirals kill viruses. However, a patient with a viral infection might sometimes be given antibiotics to reduce the work the patient's defenses have to do or to stop opportunistic infections.

Do people in Australia still have Swine Flu?

There may still be some isolated cases or outbreaks in limited locations around the world, including in Australia. However, the specifics and counts of cases are no longer being tracked now that the pandemic has been declared over. Influenza cases are still monitored as they always have been, but specific H1N1/09 counts aren't available separately from other influenza reporting any longer.

Australia had thousands of cases of Swine Flu in 2009, with the greatest number in the state of Victoria. The first swine flu death was recorded in June 2009, Australia's winter, around the same time that over 1000 cases of swine flu were noted.

As of May 7, 2009:

The US State Department still recommends that US Citizens avoid nonessential travel to Mexico.

The World Health Organization is not recommending specific travel restrictions but advises travelers to be aware and alert to the WHO reports on outbreaks and use individual discretion to determine appropriateness of travel. It is not recommended that you travel if you are currently ill with suspected flu symptoms.

Does having the flu during pregnancy really cause your child to grow up and have schizphernia?

No. I had the flu while I was pregnant with my last child and he is fine. The main concern about having the flu and being pregnant is getting enough rest, fluids, and making sure your core body temp doesn't go to high.

How does vaccine relate to the virus that it protect against?

A vaccine is essentially a weakened or dead version of the virus. This essentially "infects" you with the virus and causes the body's immune system to respond and create anti-bodies that will kill the real virus if it does ever get into your system.

How do you make flu on droid alchemy?

You mix air + bacteria in the game.

However, in real life, the flu is a virus not a bacteria and it is not airborne, it is more often passed along by touching things with your hands. It can remain in the air only for short distances from someone's cough or sneeze.

Is there a stomach flu virus going around in san diego?

I had a "stomach flu" virus that would win a prize from the CDC. It was virulent and debilitating. I first started with bronchitis, cough, and a fever of 103. It then progressed to stomach pains, nausea, diarrhea, and an overwhelming feeling of "I'm so sick". I had NO appetite and lost 12 pounds. The last phase was a funny throat with hoarseness which continues to persist. Insomnia was and still is a problem as the all night trips to the bathroom have become a habit. I have spoken to several other people (Utah and California) who have had a similar course.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services as of 29 July 2009:

Following similar actions by the WHO and CDC, DSHS will discontinue reporting novel H1N1 flu cases effective Aug. 1. Individual case reporting is resource-intensive, and because people with respiratory illnesses now are not always tested for flu, case counts represent a significant underestimate of the true number of novel H1N1 flu cases in Texas. Texas is returning to using its standard seasonal flu surveillance network to track and report flu activity.
