Cold and Flu

Questions and answers about the "Common Cold"; symptoms in the upper respiratory tract like sneezing, scratchy throat, and runny nose, but adults don't typically have fevers. Colds are usually caused by the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronaviruses (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold. Also questions about the seasonal flu, also called "regular flu", caused mostly by Type A and Type B Influenza viruses. Flu starts with similar symptoms as a cold only it hits faster and harder and usually includes fever in adults. Although the "stomach flu" is a common term, it is not a real diagnosis. The proper medical term for stomach flu is gastroenteritis (an intestinal disease, sometimes viral but also bacterial), it is often mistaken for influenza because the flu can sometimes include vomiting and diarrhea.

You have just had a miscarriage at home should you seek medical attention?

DUH!!!!! you could DIE if you do not! YES. You may not know what caused you to miscarry. You need to see a doctor: you may have a serious reproductive disorder that could prevent you from ever having children, there may still dead blood in your system or you may get a serious infection. In most cities (I only know of these clinics in the USA) in there are Family Planning and Maternal Health Clinics run by the Government; (these are NOT Abortion Clinics). Look in the phone book under "Womens Health" "Family Planning" and tell the person who answers the phone that you have had a miscarriage. They will know what you should do, and the cost is very low, or none at all. I know this because I worked for the Department of Public Heath for six years as a medical assistant and interpreter (English/Spanish). If you still don't want to go to a clinic, PLEASE, see a doctor somewhere.

Can pharmacy technicians give flu shots?

Not sure what the answer is it might vary state by state. I know a few years ago that was discussed. But with the advent of the walk-in care centers like Walgreens has- the nurse practicioners want to protect their turf. The pharmacy schools have had training for their graduates but I know Northeastern University in Boston, MA specifically kept certified pharmacy technicians out. Hope that helps I would like to know the definitive answer myself.

Do you need a signed consent form for flu vaccine for infants?

Depending on the age of the infant, they may not be able to have a flu vaccination at all. Until they are 6 months old, infants can not be vaccinated for the flu because their immune systems are too immature. Some types of flu vaccines can not be used for children under age 2.

In the US, there does need to be the standard form completed for all administrations of influenza vaccines, regardless of patient age.

There are no Federal requirements to get signed informed consent, however, many states do have such laws. Your state health department can provide you with all needed forms, both Federal and State, often online.

There is Federal law that applies to providing Vaccine Information Statements (VIS) to all patients or their parent or legal representative/guardian prior to the vaccination, regardless of age. The VIS is produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that provides all state departments of health with the newest information and statements.

The VIS provision requirement is under the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act (NCVIA) of 1986. The VIS must include specific information about the vaccine, with both the benefits and risks of vaccination. The VIS must be provided every time a vaccination is to be given before the administration of the vaccine. Children under age 10 need a booster approximately 1 month after the initial vaccination to help their young immune systems produce the correct response. They must be given a second VIS before the booster is given.

Each provider of vaccinations is required to record and keep specific patient information about the vaccination and the vaccine used (lot number, etc.) in the medical record. Or, the office can keep a permanent log of the administrations.

Under Federal law, although providers are permitted to ask for signatures on Informed Consent forms, this is not a Federal requirement. Some states do have specific requirements, including signed consent.

Can you catch a cold by working inside a freezer on a job?

If our immune system were that weak as to be affected by a few hours in cold temperature we would really be in trouble. viruses cause colds, usually the rhinovirus. The only way that freezer would give you a cold is if you were working with someone who had a cold in the freezer either at the same time or a day or two before. Wash your hands frequently and don't touch your nose, mouth or eyes.

See the related questions about common colds not being caused by being cold.

Why are people dying in Mexico of Swine Flu but other countrys are not?

One reason there have been more deaths in Mexico than other parts of the world is because the outbreak started in Mexico. Since it started there, more people in Mexico have been exposed to the virus, the incubation period has passed, and more people have become ill than in other parts of the world. In the past few days, more people in the United States have become ill with swine flu and the people becoming ill in Mexico has lessened. If swine flu become a pandemic, that trend could spread throughout the world.

How many cases of Swine Flu are there in London?

There may be some ongoing cases in limited locations around the world, including in England and the UK. However, the specifics and counts of cases are no longer being tracked by CDC, WHO, the US states, and most other countries, now that the pandemic has been declared over. Influenza cases are monitored, but specific H1N1/09 counts (and the lab tests needed to isolate the specific virus to be able to count them correctly) aren't being done. Influenza cases in general are monitored, but statistics are not being kept for H1N1/09 cases separately from other influenza types for reporting any longer in the post pandemic phase.

Why does a hot drink taste sweeter than a cold drink when you add the same amount of sweetener?

I think its other way round... The sweet things tastes sweeter when they are cold while the spicy things tastes spicier when they are hot. This is because the tongue tissues meant for cold and sweet taste are same, also the tissues for spicy and hot taste are same.

Can you be terminated if you refuse to take the flu shot?

In the US, that can depend on the type of work you do and the state you are in, as well as your terms of employment. It can be a requirement of employment that, if refused, can lead to termination in some situations. Certain vaccinations can be something that you are required to have to be able to work in some health care fields, or with certain patients. If you do not get the vaccination, you could put the patients at risk of complications or even death, especially infants, the elderly and those with immune deficiencies by exposing them to the disease- causing organisms you could be infected with before you even have symptoms and are aware that you are infected.

If you can not take the vaccination for your own health reasons, allergies, etc., then the employer might reassign you during flu season to a different work area away from these vulnerable patients, but this is often up to the discretion of the employer.

During the H1N1 pandemic in 2009, New York passed a state law requiring mandatory vaccinations against the new swine flu for workers in health care settings.

In cold weather should you go swimming if you have a cold?

Probably not, you might get sicker. Although cold weather has nothing to do with catching a "cold", they are caused by viruses which can live on door knobs, telephones, computers, etc. for up to three days. In the winter we are inside more and breathe the air of people who are coughing and sneezing, increasing our exposure to viral particles in the air. In the summer we are outside more and so we come into close contact with infected people less often. There is some evidence that getting wet and cold may lower our immunity slightly. If you want to swim in the winter, just make sure you dry off thoroughly before going out into the cold, and wash your hands frequently to avoid picking up wiruses form the world around you.

Does Medicare pay for a flu shot?

Yes, it is covered as a preventive care benefit. The elderly, 65+, are those who could be on Medicare and that is the same demographic as those who have the most complications and secondary conditions due to the seasonal flu. Estimates of the number of people who die each year in the US from influenza are as high as 36,000, most of whom are the population who have Medicare coverage and also the very young. It is in the taxpayers' best interest to help them avoid getting the flu with use of vaccinations, because the cost of care of a serious complication of the flu is tremendously higher than the costs of this preventive medicine which also prevents them from giving it to others who may be even more vulnerable. A true win-win situation.
