Antimalware scanners used to use signature databases to see if your computer was infected... When the program was run it would check to see if certain conditions where true (for example: new registry keys, files / folders) and if they where it would show the infection that made those changes. Today, antimalware scanners use behavior based or heuristic (bloodhound) detection tools, they are like watchdogs... Looking for common changes made by malware, when sensitive settings are modified by a program the user is notified. It is now common to see a malware scanner that has both signature and behavior based, for maximum prevention and removal.

Additional Information: A virus attacked my computer recently and wiped all of the programs from my programs folder (start>programs) If I go to search within the computer, it finds the files but I don't know which ones to look for or how to reinstall it.

I had this problem tonight. I would get the little red shield "Windows Security Center" popup that would say:

"norton security suite is turned off"

"norton security suite is turned off"

If I clicked on it, it would say:

Norton Security Suite says the Norton Firewall is turned off

and it would say:

Norton Security Suite says the Norton Antivirus is turned off

I opened the Norton Security suite (from Comcast), and both the Firewall and Antivirus were enabled and running. I tried all sorts of things. I was convinced that the "Windows Security Center" warning was a virus. I was afraid to try clicking on the button in Windows Security Center that claimed it would fix the problem. It turned out to be a lot less serious than that. Here is what I did that actually fixed the problem:

1) I ran as thorough scan with Norton and MalWareBytes (aka MBAM), and found nothing. If you have any other trusted antivirus program, run them as well.

2) I disconnected the network, and disabled the WIFI modem

3) I manually turned off Both the Norton Firewall and the Norton Antivirus

4) I rebooted, and waited for the "Windows Security Center" popup, and I noted that the Norton Tray icon also indicated a problem.

5) I manually turned Both the Norton Firewall and the Norton Antivirus back on.

6) I noted the "Windows Security Center" red shield immediately went away.

7) I rebooted, and the red shield never came back.

I use this laptop for video capture. To prevent a background virus scan from occuring during a capture, I disconnect all network connections, and disable Norton firewall and Antivirus, selecting the "Until next Reboot" option. I do my captures, and reboot the computer when I am done.

Apparently, "Norton Security Suite" and "Windows Security Center" can get their signals crossed. By actually disabling then later re-enabling the Norton Firewall and Antivirus, they got back in sync.

Yes it will, more running programs, slower the computer. And it will interfere with each other, may cause problems, and you will possible have a higher chance of getting a virus than just having one antivirus

I just ran a free scan with TREND MICRO Housecall 6.5 and got rid of it. In addition, it even fixes whatever mess this Trojan has left behind.

Usually pop-up blockers built into browsers will block them and only allow pop-ups from sites that you specifically instruct the blocker to allow pop-ups from.

Depends on the country where you live, but even then it can be next to impossible to trace them culprits and even if you do, if they're in another country, you're not likely to get very far.

Most anti-virus software have browser hijacking protection of some kind.

If yours doesn't get a copy of ad-aware from www.lavasoft.de, it's total free (except the pro version). This will scan and find any spyware and browser hijacking objects and delete them.

When downloaded, make sure you do an update to get the latest pattern files etc..

Do a full scan, when done right-click and click "Select All Objects", then go to the other window tab and do the same. Then click "Next" and accept the warning.

Run it at least once a month.

That should take care of any browser hijack attempts.

Also, make sure your operating system is up to date. If using Windows XP, install Service Pack 2. The firewall is much better than it was and is enabled by default now.

I had this virus in my computer, I have tried several antiviruses and anti Adware programs, they found iehndl.dll and they was able to delete it. BUT after a while, this dll was at the same place C:\Windows. I have mentioned that there are big number of tmp files in c:\Windows and when I was deleting these files, one of them was locked. So, i booted to the SAFE MODE with MSDOS (I have got MSWin XPPro) and manually deleted all tmp files by:

cd \windows

dir *.tmp (only for checking num of files)

del *.tmp

dir *.tmp(only for checking num of files)

Of course, I did a lot of cleaning by antiviruses and I manually deleted a lot of objects, but only after deleting this tmp files this virus stopped bothering me ( because antivirus software showed a window to ask me what to do with dll every time I was typing anything). So, good luck, because after two days it was there again, but after deleting tmp it was ok (for a while :-).

It could be disabled by some program which made changes in your registry.

What you need to do it is run a complete anti virus scan and if your computer is virus free do a system restore to the data your control key was working

First thing is to determine if it is actually the monitor and not your video card. Try downloading the latest drivers for your video card and monitor and see if it clears it up if not I would try another monitor on your computer and see if it still does it on the other monitor,if so then its the video card that's causing the lights(you already tried the latest driver so its probably gone bad try contacting the maker and see if they will replace it if your warenty is still good(sometimes they will replace it anyway). if not then its probably gonna mean buying another monitor(is it a crt or a flat screen?) if its a crt or a big heavy deep cased monitor sometimes when the capacitors are going out you can hit the side of the monitor case (not too hard) and see if it changes anything. If you see any changes in the picture when you hit the side of the crt monitor that's probably the problem and you will need to buy a new one most likely because it would be more expensive to fix it.(hitting a flat screen monitor isn't a good idea though).
