At which conference was the Allied invasion of Italy agreed upon?

At the Casablanca Conference (code named SYMBOL), January 14-24, 1943, the Allies agreed that an invasion of Sicily & Italy would follow the completion of the North African/Tunisian Campaign. It was further decided that the European cross-channel invasion of France would be delayed from 1943 into 1944.

Then at the Third Washington Conference (code named TRIDENT), May 12-27, 1943 and at the Quebec Conference (code named QUADRANT), August 17-24, 1943 the prior decisions with respect to Sicily & Italy were reaffirmed.

Why was d-day known as th longest day?

Because of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's quote from the movie, The Longest Day:

"Just look at it, gentlemen. How calm... how peaceful it is. A strip of water between England and the continent... between the Allies and us. But beyond that peaceful horizon... a monster waits. A coiled spring of men, ships, and planes... straining to be released against us. But, gentlemen, not a single Allied soldier shall reach the shore. Whenever and wherever this invasion may come, gentlemen... I shall destroy the enemy there, at the water's edge. Believe me, gentlemen, the first 24 hours of the invasion will be decisive. For the Allies as well as the Germans, it will be the longest day... The longest day."

Did the d-day invasion benefit Germany or the allies?

it did not benefit the Germans because they were now fighting a two-front war; one with russia, one with the rest of the allies. it benefited the allies because it got France back in control with its territory, and fascism was controlled and destroyed within Europe.

What was dropped behind enemy lines in World War 2 in preparation for D-Day?

American soldiers were dropped behind enemy lines on what was called "C-Day". The Airborne division's job was to drop behind enemy lines and attack the German coastal defenses from the rear, giving the allied amphibious invasion a better chance at taking Normandy. Did you know that the D in D-Day does not stand for doom like many people think it does?

How do guns reload?

In semi and fully automatic guns it is a simple mechanical process. The magazine holding the rounds has a spring on the bottom of it. As the slide retreats back from the breech the empty shell is "sprung" out, the slide then closes back over the breech at the same time a new round is sprung up into place.

What is the longest and shortest day in 2008?

The longest day is June 20 2008 and the shortest is December 21 2008 for the northern Hemisphere. The opposite applies for the southern Hemisphere. This is true for DAYLIGHT, however, if you live in an area that observes Daylight Savings time, the longest day would be November 2, 2008 (25 hours), and the shortest would be March 9, 2008 (23 hours.) The last paragraph is a ridicuous answer. 1. It the change between daylight time and non daylight time only causes a change in hours on the clock, the physical hours stay the same. 2. It is common knowledge that "shortest day" or "longest day" refers to daylight hours (As in day time and night time) as the hours in a day are constant. 3. The date provided are meaningless as every region that observes daylight times begins and ends the period at different times of the year. 4. The dates have no provision for the difference between the northern and southern hemisphere. The first answer is the correct response.

How did the you US help at d day?

D-day was on June 6, 1944. The U.S, British, and other allied nations in the Atlantic (yes the US was in the Pacific too but that's a different story) gathered all available ships to 5 beaches off the coast of Normandy. They were codenamed Omaha, Utah, Juno, Gold, and Sword. The 1st part of the operation was a continuous barrage of artillery and air. the US had specially designed rocket boats. this boat looked much like an oil rig except the deck was loaded with rocket launchers. this boat was capable of destroying barbed wire. There were German pillboxes (fortifications of concrete. these pillboxes were so thick that a navy shell only hoped to penetrate the walls. it could take a direct hit from a bomb and still stand with little damage. these allowed Nazis to fire from small spaces while still being protected.) and concrete bunkers for bomb shelters and sleeping ( the bunker's walls were not as thick as a pillbox's.)The marines would approach in landing craft called Higgins boats and charge the enemy head on. The highest death toll was on "Bloody Omaha" or Omaha beach. this was because the Naval Fire And Aircraft had done very little damage to this area. so, the Marines were met with an unexpected barrage of fire. eventually the marines scaled the massive forts and secured them. This battle was the 1st step to allied victory in the Atlantic.

Hope this helps!

Where does the day officially begin and end?

Wherever you are, there is an official beginning and end to any given day. It is called midnight. The first place that a given day occurs is just to the west of the International Date Line. The date line goes through the middle of its time zone. At midnight at that time zone, a new day first appears in the half time zone to the west, and the last place to start the day that is already progressing every place else is the half time zone to the east. So that half time zone to the east is also the sliver of earth where the last of a given day comes to an end. The 'defined' time zones, and the date line, are really theoretical and they are not governed by any one nation or by international law. Most of the time zone boundaries closely follow the 'defined' limits, but many nations make exceptions for the sake of their own internal and commercial needs.

What where the preparations before D-day?

First, the navy gained control of the sea lanes so that troops and supplies could move without threat of the Nazi U-Boats. Then, the Air Forces isolated he Western Part of France so that Nazi reinforcements and supplies, particularly tank units, could not reach the isolated garrisons guarding the coasts. Next, the Intelligence Services created an elaborate ruse involving a nonexistent army, led by Patton, scheduled to attack the Pas De Calais, the spot where Hitler predicted the allies would land, complete with phony radio traffic and movie prop tanks, artillery, and barracks. Meanwhile, the British and American field forces underwent intensive training in amphibious and airborne operations, eventually conducting exercises on sections of Britsh beaches that were chosen because of their resemblance to those in Normandy assigned to each particular unit. Eisenhower also needed the right combination of moon and tide. May proved premature; so the joint command settled on June 5th. In the event, rain postponed the invasion to Tuesday, June 6th, 1944.

What is the value of 1994 GOLD d-day five pound COIN?

I think that you are asking about the gold 5 pound coin from Gibralter (KM#309b) commemorating D-Day. The coin is 36mm in diameter, weighs 39.83 grams and is 91.7% gold, giving it an AGW (Actual Gold Weight) of 1.1742 troy ounces. The front bears a crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth the Second of Great Britain and the words "ELIZABETH II" to the left and "GIBRALTER - 1994" to the right. The back has an image of a soldier, a sailor and a pilot above a tank, a plane and a ship, with the words "6 JUNE 1944 D-DAY" above and "5 POUNDS" below. 850 such coins were produced in gold, all in Proof condition. According to the Standard Catalog of World Coins, the value of the coin is US$1,150; however, since the gold value (as of June 2, 2011, with gold at US$1,536 per troy ounce) is about US$1,800, I would put the current value at around US$2,000.

Note that the coin was also produced in silver and in virenium (mintage of 5,000 each).

The distance between Dover in the United Kingdom and Calais, France, varies according to precise start- and end-points in or near both towns. The shortest distance by water is just under 21 miles, while approximately 31 miles separates the town-centers by air. Ferry-travel and traveling from one to the other via the Channel Tunnel provide slightly different distances.
