How can you quiet a noisy rear differential?

if its whiny gears, banana skins,, seriously,, but it wont last long, & its not really that good for the diff.

if its bearings,, lots of grease, but again, only a very temporary fix!

if its the gears, they need to be re-hardened, its often cheaper to get a second hand diff head. or new gears.

if its the bearings, replace them.

How can you tell the rear end gear ratio?

Simply by jacking both rear wheels off the ground, put it in neutral, handbrake off, and chock the front wheels, and then turn the rear wheel 10 revolutions, and count the number of revolutions the tailshaft makes. For example, if it makes almost 38 revolutions, the diff ratio is 3.78:1. Alternatively, If the diff is out and you can't find a ratio stamped on it,count the teeth on the crownwheel and pinion gears, and calculate the ratio from this.

How do you fill ford 9 inch diff with no fill plug?

How do I remove the differential from a 1987 Jaguar XJS?

You must first remove the rear suspension assembly. It's simplest to disconnect the exhaust system at the 3-pointed flange nearest the front of the suspension cage and remove the subframe with the rest of the exhaust still in place through the cage. Disconnect the brake hose, handbrake cable and propshaft bolts on the differential. Very important: Remove the speedo sensor on the back of the diff (difficult) or disconnect cable (under rear seat) and feed cable back out through hole in floor). Support rear subframe on a big jack with spreader (assuming you already have the car on high axle stands or a lift) and undo the 8 bolts securing the 4 rubber subframe mounts. (You will of course have removed the rear wheels, and you'll see the mounts attached to the chassis member). And out she drops. Then to remove the diff you'll need to disconnect the half shafts, the inner fulcrum bearings mounts and then the four wired bolts in the top.

3 You can count how many times you have to turn the driveshaft to get one complete turn of the tires.

4 You can divide the number of teeth on the ring gear and divide by number of teeth on the pinion.

How serious is it if the rear differential is leaking oil?

Pretty serious if it is leaking badly. Depending on different models of vehicle rear differentials, are very expensive to repair and replace. Honestly, if you are mechanically inclined you can grab yourself a gasket and your specified differential fluid at your local autoparts store. Gaskets are usually $8-$20, and the fluid runs from $2.99-$4.99 per quart regular fluid. Make sure you know if your rear end has a limited slip, as special fluid is needed.

What is a 4.10 gear ratio?

It is the gear reduction that happens in the axle. With a 4.10 the pinion turns 4.1 times for every turn of the ring gear. The driveshaft is attached to the pinion and the ring gear turns the axle shafts, Which turn the wheels.

How do you change the rear differential fluid in a 1955 Chevy belair?

If it's the factory rear, you need to use some sort of vacuum pump to suck the old fluid out, since there is no drain plug on the 55 rears. You then add fluid at the fill plug on the rear of the axle housing until it runs out of the hole. Use 75-90 for light applications, or 80-90, possible higher for heavy duty applications like racing. If you have a posi rear, be sure to use some posi additive.

What is a good gear ratio?

it depends on if you want speed or torqe. if you want speed you want a larger gear on the motor and a small gear on the axel, if you want torqe it's the opposite.i would recommend a 3 to 1 ratio 3 being the bigger geasr as it isn't to fast or to slow

Does a 1994 Suzuki 250 Quadrunner 4x4 have 3-way locking differential?

Yes. I own a 1993. Stock they have a locking diff that only works in super low, but if you remove a pin from the 2wd/4wd gear selector they have a locking differential in every gear of the subtransmission

I own a vx ss commodore that is making differential noise is this common to this model.i have been told it is spider gear noise?

I also have diff noise in my VX SS, it sounds like bearings to me, maybe wrong. A diff specialist in Brisbane said about $800 if it is bearings, plus a complete service. I am looking for a good second hand diff, they are around $450.

How do you unlock 4 wheel drive hubs for 95 geo trackerthey turn but do not disengage?

Shift into two-wheel high then turn the wheel locks to the free position. If you have automatic locking hubs, come to a full stop and hold the clutch in, if a manual, then shift to two-wheel high. Put the transmission in gear and roll seven feet backwards.
