i have a 92 tracker with the same problem. from everything i have learned thus far the ecm has gone bad. I'm told it is a very common problem in these cars. mine makes a clicking sound under the dash when it wont start. if i spray ether into the intake it starts & runs for about 2 seconds then sputters to a stop. I'm waiting on a tip that shows how to bypass part of the ecm with a jumper from the coil to the efi. I'm told if that makes it run then the ecm is bad. supposedly its a 10 minute fix when you get the ecm out of the car
AnswerI have a 93' and experianced the same problem. My solution was the small wire from the starter solnoid was smashed within the harness after changing the head gasket. Generally, if you unhook the negative cable on the battery for a few minutes,the light will go off(reset). However,if you have a existing problem with one of the sensors, etc., the light will go on again after a short time . I hope this helps you. Mark My 91 2D 4WD 1600 8V had a slide switch located behind the removable panel below the steering column. The computer sends a "check engine" code periodically on some of the older Trackers to get you to take it to the dealership when there's absolutely nothing wrong (no codes come up...). Sliding this switch to the -other- position with the key on and engine stopped will reset the "check engine" light. This experience cost me $10 from a friendly garage mechanic who actually had a reader for the 91 ECU. When he saw no codes, he figured it out, went looking for and found the silly switch. The best sources are usually local junk yards only now they like to call themselves "Reclamation Center" or some othe fancy name. You will typically have to go and remove it yourself just look in your phone book and prepare for a lot of calling and a bit of work. I found one for my '97 and paid $5 for it. I've been able to find a whole lot of stuff so far as well as a set of tires for $80 and they'll remove them I'm just waiting 'till spring. E-Bay is also a source that sometimes can bear fruit. I hope your search is fruitfull and whereever you live the weather will let you go to the yards and search.

Probably a sticking injector. If it's throttle body injected, that might just be the lowest port in the intake manifold, and the fuel runs into #2. If it's port injected and there is an injector for each port, check the #2 injector. It's probably sticking open.

Assuming all Trackers have a "Pull-Up" parking / Emergency brake between the seats like my '91 and '95 4WD's have:
Remove the (4) screws holding the center housing / console to the floor and pull it up and forward over the brake handle (release the brake first!). This reveals the adjuster nut that's below the parking brake handle - the threaded rod the nut is on points toward the dash... simply use a wrench (10mm? can't recall) to turn the nut clockwise to pull more of the cable into the cab. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN or you will burn up your rear brakes. Always err on the side of slack.
