Hommershausen, Germany just north of Marburg, which is north of Frankfurt. That was until the end of the season in 2007 now it is "a place in the heart" (it no longer exists as an actual camp) Actually it still is a camp, we just had to change locations because the supporting military base closed down, so now it is no longer the original camp, but we now have 2 camps for the overseas Girl Scouts like myelf. Camp Lachenwald (near Ansbach and Illsheim) and Campeggio Bosco Ridente at Camp Darby (military base), located 15 minutes from Pisa. I miss the original camp the most since I have been going to Camp Lachenwald since I was 7

Germany: Random Facts and Trivia from "Trivia-Library"

  1. No other country in the world has harbored such thorough militarism nor fielded such splendid armies (except perhaps France under Napoleon) nor won such sweeping military campaigns. Nor has any other country ever suffered such total defeat. Germany lost both of the world's 2 global wars-but unlike the majority of her conquerors, it arose each time mightier after defeat than before, reconquering economically the countries which it could not defeat militarily.
  2. Germany has a special banking arm of the Government which enforces a policy of "Equalization of burdens." Accordingly, if someone had his house destroyed during the war he was entitled to credit for rebuilding. Those whose structures were spared had to pay a special "tax" to establish capital for those who needed to rebuild.
  3. The 1st interstate highway system in the world was the German Autobahn, a 4-lane roadway system started by Hitler in the mid-1930s as a work relief program for the jobless. Its ostensible purpose was a public motorized-traffic network, but its real purpose was the rapid movement of arms and armies. The Pennsylvania Turnpike planners studied the Autobahn before introducing the same type of highway system in the U.S.
  4. In 1933 there were 530,000 Jews in Germany. In 1946 the figure stood at 15,000 of which the great majority have since emigrated.
  5. The president of Germany was Horst Koelor but then was replaced by Christian Wulff on January 25 2010
  6. the colors on the German flag are black, red, and yellow. black stands for determination red-bavery, hardness, and strength yellow-genorosity

What is the value of a stielers hand atlas from Germany in 1891?

Depends on condition. original cover etc. In general Stieler Atlases tend to be more expensive if maps are being sold separately i.e. sum of total is smaller than individual parts.

3 things to look for: foxing, water markings, non-original markings (invented borders, crayons etc.).

I would say easily $100 for a poor copy. A good copy could get $300-400 on ebay. Antique booksellers may charge twice that amount.

Did Italy turn against germany?

Yes, that did happen. In 1943, just as the Allies were about to invade Italy, the Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini was removed from power and arrested by the King of Italy. The new prime minister, Pietro Badoglio, began negotiations with the Allies to surrender and switch sides. In early September 1943, Italy officially "surrendered" to the Allies and declared war on Germany. However, Italy was split in half- the southern half ruled by the Italian government, and the northern half ruled by Mussolini (who had been rescued from imprisonment) and his German friends- so the war did not end for Italy until May 1945.

How was the munich conference a turning point in the road toward war?

The Munich Agreement of 1938 (September) was a turning-point in the road toward another world war in several ways. Perhaps most importantly, this blood-less political victory convinced many top-level Germans, especially military leaders, that Hitler did indeed have a sixth sense of sorts -- a 'genius' -- for advancing Germany's dominance in Europe. Henceforth, Germany was more united behind Hitler's world-controlling policies.
