How to reset the air bag light on 2005 Chevrolet Silverado?

Air Bag Light

Here are opinions and answers from FAQ Farmers:

  • (BEST ANSWER) This tells you that the air bag system may not deploy in a collision. I suggest getting car to a dealer for inspection. This could be covered under warranty depending on age and mileage of the car.
  • If you need to order safety airbags do not order them brand new because they are way to expensive.

(Additional entries may or may not apply to your specific vehicle.)

  • In my auto, the air bag light comes on because the ignition switch is worn and not making good contact. Call the service manager at your local dealer. You could have a serious problem.
  • It may also be a faulty SRS computer which could cause the airbag to deploy without cause. This would be true if your vehicle is a Honda civic and was a recalled item due to the matter.
  • Do you have an airbag in your steering wheel? Does your horn work? If you answer yes then no it may be your clockspring in your steering wheel, which will cost about $100 or so to fix and you probably want to go to the dealership to fix it.
  • Whenever a airbag light is on the system is disabled and will not function at all
  • We recently had this problem on our 2002 Ranger. I took it to the Ford dealer and they said it was a problem with the driver's seatbelt pre-tensioner, and that it meant the airbag system was turned off and would not deploy in the case of any acccident. They had to remove the driver's seat to repair the probem, but now it works fine. As the vehicle was out of warranty, it cost $275 to repair, but hey, what's the price of safety?
  • When the air bag light comes on, you should drive directly to the dealer and get it fixed. It may not work in an accident, or it explode when you don't need it too.
  • Just last night this issue occurred with my 1995 Nissan 200sx. I thought that my battery was about to die and bought a new one. I installed the new battery and as an indication that something was still obvioiusly wrong my lights continued to dim and the airbag liht came on. Low and behold, my alternator needed to be replaced and was affecting my electrical system. So we are placing a new alternator in the car today to correct this issue

What is the approximate cost of the Power Control Module PCM for a 95 Intrepid?

I have heard new modules can run in the hundreds. I typically go to a junk yard and find a car that has taken some physical damage (preferably rear end damage) and pull one out of there. $20 from my local junkyard near St. Louis. If you pull yours, get the part number off of it so you can compare. Also, google it to see if any other cars made during that time frame also used the same PCM. It could give you a much greater variety of vehicles to pull one out of. Goog luck!

AnswerI have a 2001 Intrepid and I was told by the dealer that this replacement would run about $700. The problem with the PCM (Power Control Module) is that it has to be programed to your car for it to work. Even if you buy one some where else, you will have to have someone who has the correct software, program it to your VIN number and current mileage. I found a place online (www.allcomputerresources.com) where you can order the part for about $250 and give them your VIN, etc. and they will program the part before it is shipped to you. When you replace it, you can send them back the old one and then they will provide a lifetime warranty on the one you bought.
