What do California quails eat?
The California quail live primarily in Washington state, but migrate to California. They eat leaves, berries, acorns, fresh shoots, and insects.
Usual reason is the shortening day length, as the year progresses - poultry and game birds do not naturally lay during the winter. Also things such as a change of surroundings or being frightened by a predator can bring laying to a stop.
What should you do to help quail that are having trouble breathing?
Not much you can do if the quail are wild but if they domestic and you are able to control their water supply then this will help.
Any of the birds who are in distress can be picked up and their beak/nostril area can be wiped with a soft cloth wet with warm water. The objective is to remove mucus from the nostrils located about half way up the top of the beak from the tip. Those you can help this way will begin to eat and drink again. The next step is to add 2 tablespoons of Apple cider vinegar to each gallon of water available in the water dispenser. This should be the ONLY water that is made available to the flock for the next three days (no more than 3 days). Apple cider vinegar helps to clear mucus and aids in recovery from respiratory distress.
The birds may sneeze and cough a few hours after treatment begins. More vinegar is not better, too much and the birds will refuse to drink any water causing a worse problem.
You can also buy a water soluble tonic from wherever you buy your bird feed.

What is a good gauge gun and barrell chock to hunt quail with?
Shotguns are best for hunting quail. I would suggest a winchester model shotgun because of their high quality. The winchester x3 series seem to be pretty good. If you are looking for other type of rifles, .22 caliber are best in my opinion. I own an old .22 winchester and it shoots great. I've also seen airgun quail hunting. If you are interested in airguns, I suggest a pcp (precharged pneumatic) rifle because of its great accuracy and power. The airarms s410 is a great long and short distance .22 pcp airgun.
we have 10 of them but have never tried this,
I'm guessing that if they just touched the water for a second they could still fly out of the water but if their feathers became water logged they would surely drown.
A quail is a ground bird who seldom flies. It prefers to run in ground cover and nests in that same ground cover. It is a smallish bird, generally weighing less than two pounds.

Most of the time, most species are basically seed-eaters, but they will eat most invertebrates that they happen across. For most species, a diet exclusively or very high in insects is essential for the first few days of life.
