What is the lifespan of guinea pigs and what's wrong with them if they have yellow butts?

The average lifespan of a guinea pig is 5 to 7 years.

The yellow butts are probably just the color of their urine on their fur.

Male guinea pigs may have a yellow waxy area above their backsides where a tail would be ( if they had a tail). This is their scent gland and the yellow waxy substance is normal. If the fur is dirty with faeces or if the area is excessively matted then you can clean it gently with a small animal shampoo and warm water. (make sure your pig is completely dry before he goes home though, you don't want him to catch a cold!)

What should you do when your guinea pig breaks a nail?

Answer

you should check that it has not broken the blood circulation, if it has, bathe it in warm, salt water and keep it clean. If it hasn't, don't worry!!

Answer

if there is blood coming out of the nail, it has broken the blood circulation.

Answer

If its bleeding, a powder available from the pet shop such as quickstop will stem the flow. If you can't get to a pet shop then corn flour can make a pretty good substitute. Crumble some into a bottle top and dip the bleeding nail into it

What is a strange lumpy growth on your guinea pig's right back foot on his third toe?

It is important to have your guinea pig examined by a veterinarian to determine the cause of the lumpy growth. It could be a tumor, abscess, infection, or other medical issue that requires treatment. Prompt veterinary care is recommended to address the problem.

Why would a guinea pig die over night?

Like most rodents guinea pigs can be scared easily and have excitable hearts, my first thought would be heart attack. There's also the possiblity he/she was sick and it went unnoticed as they have no way to tell you how they feel. My Guinea pig died extremely quickly from what looked like Diahorea, i would check to see if the Guinea had, had diahorea. It also could have died from Draughts or a heart attack My guinea pig died from pneumonia. The only way I knew he was sick, was he didn't drink or eat as much as he normally did. He sneezed once, and was unusually calm for a day or two. By the time he showed sick symptoms and I took him to the vet, it was too late. The vet said they don't like to worry you with their problems, so they like to pretend they're not sick until they can't fake it anymore. Heart attack seems very logical, too.

== == == ==

Guinea Pigs are prey animals and as such don't show when they are sick. It is a defense mechanism, because of this, most piggy owners don't know their pig is sick until it is an emergency situation. You should always do routine check-ups on your piggy. Some things to check are, Lumps, Dried mucus around the nose or a runny nose, and for parasites. If your piggy is suddenly less active, or isn't eating/drinking properly you should take her to the vet asap!

What could your guinea pig have had if there was crusty white stuff on her skin and she lost all her hair but you treated it with flea spray and she's looking better?

It sounds like your guinea pig has mange (mites). You need to take it to the vet because my guinea pig had them before and she started biting her skin, yours will probably do the same. You can buy a decent mite treatment from the vets or sometimes from good pet stores. Do not overdose though and follow the instructions carefully, it is not advised to treat pregnant guinea pigs with this treatment. Pregnant guinea pigs may receive a shot of ivomectin from the vet's office. It is sad that you let it get this far without letting it see a vet. SHAME ON YOU!!!

If a guinea pig makes sounds when you hold it does that mean something is wrong or that it is happy?

Well, it could mean lots of things it could be unhappy, angry, scared or sometimes when it wants food it make a sound, they do it sometimes just because they are happy. If you play with them they will be much happier!

If they make a sort of purring noise then they are very happy, like when a cat is purring. If they make a series of low quick squeaks they are speaking to you and quite relaxed. IF, however, they make a loud high pitched squeak then they are frightened, shocked or very uncomfortable and be careful - they might run. The loud high pitched squeak can also mean they are asking for food, whenever my guinea pigs hear the door open they start squeaking for food. Also it depends who's holding it if its somebody whit an unfamiliar scent it will get scared if its still makes those noises and your holding it try holding it more often it will get more calm and relaxed with you.

If they start to squeak you should try to take him out every day and get him use to you and other people holing him so tat dose not mean it sick or some thing is wrong.

If a guinea pig's eyes are watery and half shut sometimes completely shut until you pick it up should it go to the vet?

Your Guinea Pig may have an eye infection. It can also have allergies. Set up a vet appointment. They will give you and ointment that you will put between his or her eyelids. Until the vet appointment I suggest taking a paper towel and putting warm to hot water on the paper towel. Then you need to dab the paper town on the guinea pigs eye. The pig will naturally close his eye while you do this. You might see green ooze come out of the corner of his or her eye. If you do see this than patting the paper town in the same matter in which you did to make the ooze come out. Although doing this will make your guinea pig's eye look better. You still need to take him or her to the vet. Reason being that even with the medicine the eye infection might come back. Without medicine you wont be able to get rid of the infection. I had this same problem and the medicine only costed me a total of $25 dollars and that's with a vet visit and the medicine. Use the medicine until it is completely gone.

After the infection is gone make sure your pig is getting vitamin C which could have been the problem in the first place. Athough for me it was not a vitamin C problem. My pig was sick from the time I got him. The eye infections kept coming back. The infection might be a sign of other problems but most of the time its just a lack of vitamin C.

I hope this helps anyone out there who is having this problem. I remember when this happened to my pig and I was frantic. Hope all is well with your pig!

YES The guinea pig is sick and if it has gotten that bad already it probably has a slim chance of survival without a vet's care.

yes cause it can be allergic to something that you gave it or your not taking very good care of it

YES! my guinea pig had that a couple of weeks ago and now he has died so take it to the vet ASAP

Yes, I think you should take it to the vet before whatever sickness it has gets worse.

You should have taken it to the vet BEFORE you asked this question. The rule with ANY PET is, to be safe, VET FIRST, QUESTIONS LATER. This way you can make SURE that it receives proper attention IN TIME.

:

Tottaly if you don't it can get worse or even more infected!!! TAKE TO A VET OR SAY REST IN PEACE!!

Is it normal for a baby guinea pig to eat his bedding?

if its beding is hay then yes it normal for any g-pig to eat hay

But you should NOT use hay for bedding. Hay is to eat, you should use either aspen (NOT pine) or recycled paper bedding that you buy at the pet store.

Improved:

Actually, it is normal for guinea pigs to eat their bedding. I know that it is gross, but guinea pigs are supposed to eat their droppings because it gives them necessary nutrients that they don't have time to absorb the first time it goes through their bodies. Recycled paper bedding at the pet store is the best, and the best kind of hay is the KAYTEE brand Timothy hay. Hope that this helps!

Two brown guinea pigs are crossed All but one of the offspring is brown The one is white Why?

The Allele that causes guinea pigs to be brown in color is a dominant one and the white guinea pig's alleles are recessive. The brown guinea pig had two dominant alleles for brown color and the white guinea pig had two for white. Since offspring get one allele from each parent they have one dominant brown allele and one recessive white allele. Since the dominant trait is the one that is going to be apparent, it would only make sense for all the offspring to be brown in color.

My guinea pigs cage smells of ammonia i spend a lot of time shut in the small utility with them every day can this be causing my health problems?

Yes, inhaling ammonia fumes can cause health problems such as respiratory issues, throat irritation, and even headaches. It's important to ensure proper ventilation in the area where the guinea pigs are kept to reduce the concentration of ammonia in the air. Consider using bedding that controls odor better and cleaning the cage more frequently to address the smell.

What color are the guinea pig parents in the cross shown in punnette square B?

This depends on what punnet square b looks like. A guinea pig is homozygous if its two alleles are both dominant or both recessive. Usually, the homozygous parent is the one with either the two capital letters in the genotype or the two lowercase letters. Heterozygous is when there is one uppercase letter and one lowercase letter in the genotype.

In guinea pigs the allele for black coat B is dominant over the allele for white coat b An animal with a black coat was crossed with one with a white coat and produced all black coated offspring a. De?

The black-coated animal from the initial cross must have been heterozygous (Bb), as it passed on a black allele to all offspring. The white-coated animal from the cross was homozygous recessive (bb). The offspring all inherited one black allele from the black-coated parent and one white allele from the white-coated parent, resulting in a genotype of Bb for all offspring and a black coat color.

Should you go and get your guinea pig if there are fireworks going off?

Yes, it's a good idea to bring your guinea pig indoors if there are fireworks going off. Loud noises can scare guinea pigs, causing stress and anxiety. It's important to keep them safe by providing a quiet and secure environment during fireworks displays.

How can you heal a guinea pig's foot without going to the vet?

You have to describe exactly what is wrong to someone who can tell you what to do, or search on the Internet to find specific information about what the problem is and how to treat it. Or, you could try to contact a vetenary school and see if someone will give you some advice or even call a local vet's office and see if they will give you some information.

My guinea pig is sleeping and or laying in her house a lot lately I've had her for about 3 years and shes never slept this much is it because she is getting older or is something wrong?

It's possible that your guinea pig is getting older and may require more rest. However, changes in behavior like increased sleep or lethargy can also be a sign of illness. Monitor her closely for any other symptoms such as decreased appetite, weight loss, or difficulty moving, and consider consulting a veterinarian for a check-up if you're concerned.

What is the genotype of two black heterozygous guinea pig?

here is my answer found using a Punnett Square: for one trait (lets use hair color) both guinea pigs are hazel. But, because they are heterozygous they also have the resessive gene for white. So, you cross Hh with Hh. You then have this genotypic ratio: 1 HH:2 Hh:1 hh This can be translated into a phenotypic ratio: 3 hazel: 1 white The final answer: You will have 25% homozygous dominant, 50% heterozygous (showing the dominant), and 25% homozygous recessive.

Pure-breeding yellow guinea pigs crossed with pure-breeding white ones produce only cream-colored offspring This pattern indicates incomplete dominance Rough hair is found to be dominant to smooth h?

this means that the parents are rryy and RRYY (R-rough, r-smooth, Y-yellow, y-white skin)

the F1 population would all be rough hair and cream coloured skin - phenotype while the genotype would be RrYy. since Rr is dominant therefore rough and since Yy is codominant therefore cream coloured skin

now if u self them u get 4 different types of gametes: RY, Ry, rY, ry

now putting them in a mendalian double hybrid cross u get the genotypes

RRYY-1- rough hair yellow skin

RRYy- 2 - rough hair cream skin

RrYY-2 - rough hair yellow skin

RrYy-4 - rough hair cream skin

RRyy-1 - rough hair white skin

Rryy-2 - rough hair white skin

rrYY-1 - smooth hair yellow skin

rrYy-2 - smooth hair cream skin

rryy-1 - smooth hair and white skin

there fore your phenotypic ratios would be

rough hair and yellow skin - 3

rough hair and cream skin - 6

rough hair and white skin - 3

smooth hair and yellow skin - 1

smooth hair and cream skin - 2

smooth hair and white skin - 1
