Hawaii

The Kingdom of Hawaii was purported to have been annexed to the United States of America on January 17th 1898 by an act of the American Congress, known as the Newlands Resolution. Acts of congress are limited and do not extend past Territorial Boundaries to other sovereign nation states, hence making Hawaii's alleged annexation questionable.

Liliuokalani wanted to establish a constitution for Hawaii but the rich planters called the "Committee of Safety" and U.S. Minister John Stevens wanted Hawaii to become a US territory. The annexation happened on July 7, 1898. Liliuokalani did not have the power to fight the annexation so she abdicated.

The US got Hawaii from the government of the Republic of Hawaii. Members of what was called the Committee of Safety overthrew Queen Liliʻuokalani in In January 1893, and formed a Provisional Government for what ultimately became a new Republic of Hawaii. The government of the Republic of Hawaii and the government of the United States agreed that the US annex Hawaii in 1898.

The US did NOT buy Hawaii, instead, they stole it from the Hawaiian Kingdom by means of an armed military overthrow. The Queen of Hawaii was imprisoned because she refused to cooperate with the United States government.
