The sense of belonging to and love for one's country was supposed to make leaders try as hard as possible to prevent their countries from engaging in conflicts with other countries. This would have prevented the extreme military spending and disruption of economic activity that later landed most of Europe into an economic slump.

Italy had a parliamentary democracy from the late 1860s up until the years leading to World War II when Benito Mussolini takes power and raises a fascist regime. Italy's fascist government was similar to Nazi Germany's, which advocated militarism and nationalism, which are quite dangerous when a nation is 100% so.

Hitler gained power in Germany and Mussolini usurped political power in Italy. Thus, Nazism land fascism became the order of the day. Most ordinary citizens had the good sense to keep their head down during those turbulent years.

The average soldier was just a regular guy trying to do his duty and obey the orders that came down from his political masters. So, technically, Italy was a member of the Axis powers and was therefore an enemy of the Allied powers.

But, the population as a whole in both countries, as well as Japan, were halfhearted in their support of their political masters and when things started to go south as the war progressed; the Italians, to their credit, threw off their political masters and revolted.

So, Italy was treated more as an ally after they strung up Mussolini.

Mussolini had delusion of grandeur in which he claimed to the Italians they would restore the Roman Empire by capturing other nations. He started with going after Ethiopia and their oil fields. He thought he would get his own nations for his own Empire and Adolf Hitler would have his own Third Reich Empire.

Italy did not leave World War 2. Italy was forced to be allies with the Axis Forces when they did not want to do this. It was Mussolini who did this. The Italians were forced to fight with the Nazis against the Allied Forces. The Italians wanted to be allied with the Brits and Americans. Eventually, The King of Italy and the Italian populace were able to arrest Mussolini, try him and execute him. They then joined the Allied Forces to defeat the Nazis.

I don't think Mussolini really thought it through that far. he had some vague idea of a new Roman Empire but his plans weren't really very specific.
