What is an example of management style in Saudi Arabia?

As might be expected in a culture where organizations are run along strongly hierarchical lines, managers tend to be very instructional in their approach.

As might be expected in a culture where organizations are run along strongly hierarchical lines, managers tend to be very instructional in their approach. Subordinates view it as the boss' role to take decisions and to convey those decisions down the chain for implementation. However, the leader will often include his group in a consensus-style discussion with the final decision being taken by the leader.

One of the by-products of the belief that leaders lead and followers follow is that those things which are not specifically requested are likely to remain undone. It is, therefore, imperative that all instructions given should be clear, unambiguous and complete.

It is important to the boss that his position is respected and subordinates may show extreme levels of deference. It is of course important to remember that this deference is probably not only being shown to the organizational position of the boss but also to his family status, class connections and age.

Business is mostly personal. It will be impossible to finalize agreements without face-to-face contact. Decisions are made slowly. Do not try to rush the process. Most decisions require several layers of approval. It may take several visits to accomplish simple tasks. Saudis are tough negotiators. They believe that everything is negotiable. Business is hierarchical. Decisions are made by the highest-ranking person. Repeating your main points will be interpreted as meaning you are telling the truth. High-pressure tactics are counter-productive. Decisions are easily overturned.

What is meant by leading and lagging pf?

Power Factor is the ratio of true vs apparent power, and comes into play with a reactive (inductive or capacitive) load. A purely resistive load, such as a light bulb or toaster, will have a power factor of 1 because the current is in phase with the voltage. An inductive load, however, such as a motor, will have a power factor less than 1 because the current lags the voltage. You could also have a capacitive load, with a power factor less than 1, but in this case the current leads the voltage.

Answer

The terms, 'leading' and 'lagging' refer to whether a circuit's load current is leading or lagging the supply voltage. Current will 'lead' in resistive-capacitive (R-C) circuits, and 'lag' in resistive-inductive (R-L) circuits. So, a 'leading power factor' indicates a leading current, and applies to R-C circuits, while a 'lagging power factor' indicates a lagging current, and applies to R-L circuits.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs?

Maslow's need hierarchy theory: a motivational theory of needs that is arranged in a hierarchy pyramid that asserts that people are motivated to fulfil a higher need as a lower one becomes satified or met

the pyramid in inverted order: (so from the lowest to the highest)

  • Physiological: the need for food, air, water, shelter etc
  • Safety: the need for a secure and stable environment where there aren't any pain, threat or illness
  • Belongingness/love: the need for love, affection and interaction with other people
  • Esteem: the need for self esteem through personal achievement as well as social esteem through recognition and respect from others
  • Self actualization: the need for self fulfilment, realization of one's potential

Maslow also includes the desire to know (knowledge) and desire for aesthetic beauty as two innate drives that do not fit within the hierarchy

Other things you should know:

- you can be motivated by several needs but the strongest one woudl be the lowest level that has not been satisfied yet

- you have to satisfy the lower needs to go up the hierarchy

- isn't the ideal model because people do not necessarily follow the same order as the hierarchy (doesn't take into account the specific situation so this model cant be used in every case)

I learnt this in psyc class, this is part of my notes from a lecture

Motivate.

Find out what the employees want and or need. Promise them they'll get it if they perform... and miracles will happen.

Of course you have to be fair... if they apparently are not well equipped or have got none of the knowledge to do the job, you can promise them a place in heaven and nothing will happen. You need to support them with right tools and trainings.
