Menstruation

Menstruation is the routine discharge, or release, of blood and mucosal tissue from the uterus. This process occurs about once a month from the time a female reaches puberty until menopause. During pregnancy, the monthly menstrual cycle is absent while the womb nourishes the growing fetus.

Can you Ride roller coasters while on your period?

Does water stop your period while you're in water?

No, your period does not stop in the water - this is a myth.

Your uterus does not know you're in the water and nor does it care, it will carry on shedding just as it would when you're not in the water as menstruation is controlled by hormones not water. The idea that water pressure stops menstruation is just as nonsensical, this isn't how water pressure works.

Experiment: get into a shallow bath on your period you can see this for yourself, when your flow is lighter what little blood leaves your body may be diluted in the water so less noticeable, however heavier flow will be more noticeable and if you pass mucus or uterine tissue it will be obvious.

Upon getting out of the water the blood will be diluted with the water so it will potentially run down your legs for everyone to see and getting on the side of the pool, again more noticeable when heavy.

If you want to swim on your period use one of the following:

  • Tampons
  • Soft tampons
  • Menstrual sponges
  • Menstrual cups
  • Diaphragms
  • Softcups

Menstrual cups are the best option as they are far safer and more hygienic than tampons - thus no risks of vaginal infections, increased cramps, or Toxic Shock Syndrome - this means that they can be worn with light flow so you don't have to sit out like you would with tampons, and they can be worn for up to 12 hours so no needed to get out the water to change every few hours. With menstrual cups nothing shows outside the water, they don't absorb water, and they don't leak like other options.

Can you take tampons on a flight?

Of course you can take tampons on a flight- why wouldn't you?

People menstruate and when they menstruate they normally need to use menstrual products - tampons, pads, menstrual cups. This means that unless they were to ban menstruating people from flying, which they couldn't as it would be discrimination, then they'd have to allow menstrual products on flights. They sell tampons at the airport, and there's even a little compartment in the airplane bathrooms with spare pads and bags for used tampons/bags before you bin them.

How do you deal with your period at the beach?

So it's sunny and your friends invite you down the beach. But it's that time of the month again and your too embarrassed to say no to your friends because you are on your period. Well don't be! When you are on your period you shouldn't be embarrassed to do everyday activities. When you go to beach you MUST NOT WEAR A PAD! When you go into the water the pad will inflate to become a nappy! And it will look like you have a groin or a (very) large pubic hair bush :/ which is the last thing you want!

When you go to the beach you MUST WEAR A TAMPON! You will find it will

a.) be more comfortable

b.) unnoticeable

c.) less hassle !

When you are in the water your blood flow will slow way down or stop. It is just when you get out of the water that it starts again.

What could be wrong if you had your tubes tied seven years ago and your periods have been regular but now you have not had a period in two months?

Tubal Ligation has nothing to do with menstruation. It is just blocking the fallopian tubes through surgery using one of several different methods.. A woman who has had her tubes tied will still have her period. The fallopian tubes are not connected to the uterus.

Chances of being pregnant are very small, but the only way to know for sure is with a pregnancy test.

How is it possible to have a period after a tubal ligation if the tubes are blocked how does the egg travel to make you have a period?

This is because the egg is only physically barred from getting through. The uterine lining still thickens and builds up during the cycle as no-one told it there was no point! Your hormones still function in the same way, producing and releasing the egg, and building the womb's lining. The period still has the function of cleaning out this thickened lining each month.

You had a tubal ligation almost four years ago you are only 29 and lately your periods have been irregular - sometimes going three months apart. What can cause this?

Depending upon your age, you could be starting menopause. It is possible, though very unlikely, that, if the fallopian tubes weren't severed, an ovum could pass through the tube. This is best answered by a visit to a gynecologist.

Why might you be late for your period if you had your tubes tied?

I had a tubal ligation in 1999. And my periods stay regular. So if you haven't got your period. I would call my Doctor and have myself checked. Because with my experience that isn't normal. Your periods are controlled by your ovaries secreting hormones directly into your bloodstream, nothing to do with your tubes. So your periods should remain absolutely normal.

What causes a woman to menstruate every month?

releases one of the more than 400,000 eggs that are stored in her ovaries, and the lining of the womb (uterus) thickens in anticipation of receiving a fertilized egg. If the egg is not fertilized, progesterone levels drop and the uterine lining sheds

Do you still have a period after a tubal ligation?

After a tubal ligation, no matter which method, your body is adjusting to the changes. Hormones, ovulation, and even serotonin levels are affected by this surgery. Menstrual changes are common, especially if you have stopped your previous birth control method along with the surgery. It can take anywhere between 6 to 18 months for your body to readjust, and a "proper" cycle to resume. If you were always irregular, this can be even more so anticipated. For Depro-Provera users prior to TL, you may have irregular bleeding patterns. Speak to your doctor with any concerns, and always be alert to the possiblity of that 1% failure rate! Hope this helps. After a tubal ligation, no matter which method performed, your body is adjusting physically and emotionally. Hormones, ovulation, and even serotonin levels are affected by this surgery, sometimes causing what is referred to as "Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome". Menstrual irregularities are common, especially if you have stopped your previous birth control method along with the surgery. It can take anywhere between 6 to 18 months for your body to re-adjust, and a "normal" cycle to resume. If your cycles were irregular pre-surgery, this can be even more so anticipated and considered the norm. For those who used Depo-Provera as a form of birth control prior to your TL, you may have spotting for several days to weeks at at time after cessation of this method. Ultimately you know your body best and if you have any post-surgical concerns, see your Doctor right away. For all those ladies who are trying to conceive after a TL, I understand...I am 2 months post TL... but remember to be thankful for those we already have. Best regards and hopes for success to you all.

What brand of football pads provide the best protection?

Plastic & foam

If you're talking name brand pads then the Power/Riddell pads are probably the most widely used shoulder pads in College and Professional football. Riddell and Schutt are the most used helmet brands though a small number of other companies are being used right now but with very little success and usage. Companies like Adams and Xenith would be the helmets that come to mind.

What happens during a period?

You bleed from your vagina for around five days, and you have to wear either pads or tampons during that time. There can be cramps with it as well as some water weight gain, which goes away after the period is over for the month. Then it happens all over again every month!

How did women handle the menstruation in ancient and medieval times?

The last one to answer this was so wrong. Women were smarter than to just "sit in a hole for a week." So here's an improvement.

Ancient Egyptians used a compress of linen with a sponge on top, like a pad. They also had internal menstrual protection of rolled cotton or papyrus. Yep, that's right: tampons! If the woman had strange pains of other indications that the bleeding was unnatural, there were many herbal remedies a doctor would blend, wrap in linen, and use as a suppository. Basically, a tampon filled with herbs and honey. How nice!
The ancient Greeks invented tampons made from lint wrapped around a small piece of wood, recorded in writing by the famous Hippocrates in the 5th century B.C.

Israelite women had a really hard time. They were considered "unclean," and anything they touched or sat on was unclean.

When a woman has a discharge and the discharge form her body is blood, she will remain in a state of menstrual pollution for seven days. Anyone who touches her will be unclean. Anything that she lies on in this state will be unclean; Anyone who touches her bed must wash clothing and body. If a man goes so far as to sleep with her, he will contract her menstrual pollution and be unclean for seven days. Once she is cured of her discharge, she will allow seven days to go by; after that she will be clean. On the eighth day she will take two turtledoves or two young pigeons and bring them to the priest at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. The priest will offer one of them as a sacrifice for the sin and the other as a burnt offering." (Leviticus 15:19-30)

Seven days unclean, then another seven days had to go by after she was "cured." In a cycle that took place every 28 days, that meant she was "clean" only half the time. Because of this, the women were secluded during their period. They didn't have much, so a couple yards of linen was used to absorb the blood, which then had to be washed out by hand. This horrendous hassle is what gave menstruating women a bad reputation throughout the Dark Ages and even up until the Age of Enlightenment.

Women in the Middle Ages also made tampons. Cotton was easy to come by. They would roll these into a suppository with a string attached from the cotton "tampon" to their upper thigh, believing that if they didn't, the tampon would float up and lodge in their uterus.

Here's an herbal recipe:

Take half a drachma of triacle diatesseron, the same amounts of cockle flour and myrrh, and grind them together with bull's gall in which savin or rue has been rotted. Then cover the mixture with cotton and thereof make a suppository as large as your little finger and put it in your privy member, but first anoint it with clean honey and oil together, sprinkle powder of scammony on it, and put it in the privy member; one can do the same with lupin root, and that is much better.

Of course, this sort of weird concoction made the woman bloat badly.
Many cultures used different ways to help a women during "that time of the month," but usually the cure was the same as today: a tampon of cotton or cloth, or a dressing of linen like a pad, with herbs to take care of the pain.

They did not simply "sit in a hole."

How does exercise affect aging?

Exercise does slow the aging process. When we say "aging" we usually mean the deterioration of function of internal organ systems, tightening of connective tissue, loss of muscle tone and strength, poor breathing, loss of general energy and decreased cognition.

Exercises that emphasize using the body in a fluid way, such as Tai-chi and chi-gung help to improve the flow of blood, lymph and intercellular fluid, thus bring more nutrients to the cells, eliminating waste and improving the immune system.

Yoga helps prevent the shrinking of the body due to the shrinkage of connective tissue and tension of the muscles.

Pilates improves muscle tone and coordination.

A new exercise called "Zookinesis", based on Tai-chi, chi-gung and Yoga, is known as, "Age Reversal Exercises". It has all of the above benefits plus improving breathing, increasing the strength of the mind, increasing flexibility and increasing general energy levels.

Swimming helps to keep the joints loose, tones muscles and can be aerobic.

There are many people who stay "young" throughout life by practicing gentle exercises.

Could you come on your period twice in one month?

no, if you get your period, youre not pregnant You must be an underaged teenager. First you need to know how to spell pregnant. Now the answere to your question is yes. You can be pregnant and still have a period. I suggest you get to a gynecologist and get yourself a pregnancy test. Next time try abstience or better yet don't have sex until you are old enough and understand the repercussion or the effects of trying to have a child being single or even married and not have the proper support. Concerned viewer.
