Assuming that you are referring to an automatic transmission- the only place to add fluid is through the transmission dipstick tube. Just be sure that your fluid is low before you add, because there may not be a drain plug (some had them, some didn't).

98 mountaineer steering column is locked and when the key is inserted into the ignition it will not turn it either way the vehicle is imobile Any suggestions?

Maybe a locksmith to re-key lock

Solution: I called a locksmith and he did the following:

1. He squirted WD40 into the lock and inserted a key he made into the ignition. He proceeded to bang the key while in the ignition with the back of the pliers.

2. He then removed the cylinder from the steering column.

3. He then proceeded to remove each pin from the cylinder to clean them and run them across a file to remove any burrs.

4. He sprayed WD40 all over the cylinder and used a thin tool to clean every opening.

5. He then put it all back together and it worked perfectly.

It cost $80 and he guaranteed his work forever. He said most locksmiths will just get it to work without taking it apart to thoroughly clean everything. He recommended that I spray WD40 into the ignation twice a year and move the key in and out repeatedly to keep it in good working order.

sometimes the steering wheel is jammed into a certain position that it will not allow the key to turn. try to pull the steering wheel one way or another while trying to turn the key. Steve

What size windshield wipers do you need for a 2005 mercury mountaineer?

The 2005 Mercury Mountaineer takes 20" drivers and 16" passenger side wiper blades. See sources and related links below for more information. Since there are over 22 different wiper arm attachments, do not buy wipers just by length only. Be sure to lookup exact wiper blade part numbers by vehicle make, model and year for the brand wiper you decide to purchase. This ensures correct length AND correct attachment.

What does check gauges on a 2002 Mountaineer mean?

When the "check gauges" light comes on it means that your car's computer has noticed that something may be wrong. Usually it is relating to the oil pressure or temperature, coolant temperature, or even that your gas is low. You should look for lights relating to these problems on your dash that don't usually come on. If you can't tell, then take your car to a shop that has computer diagnostic equipment and have them check it out. It will most likely be something simple, but if ignored can lead to engine damage or terrible gas mileage.

What makes the fuses blow?

Why Fuses Blow & Circuit Breakers Trip Fuses and Circuit Breakers are safety devices designed and installed in electrical circuits TO PROTECT the conductors [wires] from short circuits and overload conditions which can cause extreme overheating that can result in damage to the insulation and the conductors and worse, the possibility of a FIRE which could destroy the vehicle. When a fuse, and replacement fuses, blows, especially if it happens repeatedly, is an indicator of an UNSAFE CONDITION in that circuit, usually a short. Do not install a larger fuse in a misguided attempt to correct the problem. To install a larger fuse would almost guarantee damage to the wiring and an electrical system fire. The proper "fix" is for a qualified technician, who knows what he/she is doing, to troubleshoot the circuit, find and identify the defect, and make proper repair [s], BEFORE replacing the fuse again [with the properly sized fuse].

How do you reset the 'Change Oil Soon' light in a 2002 Ford Explorer or Mercury Mountaineer?

Easy get an oil change at a garage and have them erase the code or do the oil change your self and then disconnect the neg battery terminal. Easier : On the console, where the oil change light is on, scroll through the items until you get to oil life. Once at oil life, hold the reset button and it will say Engine oil new? Press reset again and this should set you oil life back to 100% without needing to disconnect your battery

Complete

1- Turn on the ignition without starting the car

2- You will get warning messages on the display (including the "change oil soon" or "oil change required" message) press reset for each warning till you get the Odometer displayed.

3- press the setup button until "press reset for system check" appears

4- hit the reset button (need to do this fairly quickly, if you end up back at the odometer go back to step 3)

5- the system will scroll through the different things that are wrong that it has detected, you should go to "oil life XX%, Hold Rest New" message first if nothing else more major has been detected. When on this message hold the reset down unit you get the message "if new oil hold reset".

6 - hold the reset down till the message "oil life set to 100%" appears (note have seen different wording in some models)

7 - system should scroll through any remaining messages and then return to the odometer reading

Switch the car off and on and confirm that the message does not reappear. Have seen some instances where will not reset, if so take to your dealer.

What is the proper tire pressure for a 1999 mountaineer?

The tire pressure more than likely is between 35-40 on most passenger cars. You can find max psi on the wall of the tire. - I've heard you're supposed to refer to the pressure rating on the vehicle placard located on the drivers door: http://www.ehow.com/how_2097575_pressures-vehicle-properly-inflate-tires.html "There is a common misunderstanding that a tire's pressure is stamped on the sidewall. In actuality, this pressure stamped on a tire's sidewall is the MAXIMUM COLD PRESSURE that the tire will safely hold. Many tires are rated for a maximum cold pressure of 44 psi, to allow the tires to be used on a wide variety of vehicles. Some vehicles may only require 30 psi cold pressure, others may require 38 psi cold pressure. In both cases, this cold pressure is less than the tire's MAXIMUM cold pressure, so the tire can safely be installed on these vehicles. Tires should be inflated according to the manufacturer's cold specifications as described in steps 1 thru 3 above (see link), not the maximum pressure stamped on the sidewall of the tire." Temperature, altitude, heavily loaded vehicles or towing are also important considerations. http://www.babcox.com/editorial/tr/tr119952.htm http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/TireSafety/ridesonit/brochure.html
