how do i open the fuse panel on a 2002 mercury mountaineer

My 1998, which I believe should be identical to the 1997 in this respect, gets between 12 mpg and 22 mpg. 12 is mostly light city traffic, 22 is interstate travel. This is for the 5.0 V-8.

the mountaineer has 3 individual light sockets that can easily be put into the wrong place when replacing the rear light assembly. Just take a Phillips head screwdriver and take out the light assembly to get access to and change the different dongles to the proper receptical.

go to the dealer with the vin number and they can make the key about $150

It means that the ABS control module has detected a problem in the ABS system. That will be impossible to determine without talking to the module with a scan tool to find out why it turned the light on. The other thing that it means is that you do not have ABS, but you now have conventional brakes. The ABS part of the brakes will not work until the problem is found out and fixed.

Check the fuse first...start simple and cheap.

In a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer :

The passenger compartment fuse panel is directly under the dash

on the drivers side

In a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer :

open the door

Remove two screws holding tail light assembly. Pull or Pry out tail light assembly. Locate center wire plug harness, turn to remove, pull out bulb, push new bulb in.

Oil pan drain nut is facing rearward, middle of truck underneath. 16mm hex socket or wrench. Catch the oil in a wide pan, 8 quart capacity. Filter is accessible underneath behind radiator from the front on drivers side. There's a nice plastic drip shield under it. You'll need a top mounted filter wrench to remove it. Remember to pour some oil into the filter and wipe the rubber gasket on the edge of the new filter. You'll need 6 quarts of oil to fill it. 5W-20 is recommended.

Six quarts is very good starting point. Should be right on the money.

You may want to check the heater blower resistor, its behind the glove compartment

its your blend door failed or your blend door actuator failed. 1 of the 2 or both. cant find any info on tearing out dash in 03 mountaineer and it appears to me that my research says its in a different spot than other years.

I'm assuming it's the same as the 5.0 L in a 1996 to 2001 Ford Explorer :

Motorcraft MERCON V - automatic transmission fluid , according to the owners manual

Down the tube that holds the trans dipstick.

The fuel pump is in the fuel tank.

Overdrive is the normally allowed position

Until you are travelling around 50 MPH / 80 KPH it won't shift into overdrive

anyway

If you are towing something , or driving in hilly country where the transmission is always downshifting , then you can shut the overdrive off and the O/D OFF light will light up in your dash

5x114.3 Think it will work with 5x4.5 too (standard/metric conversion) but not sure.

Depends on your driving style. I have an 03 with the 4.6L V8 and routinely get 22HWY/18 CITY.

According to my Haynes manual

If you park your car with the wheels turned hard to the left you can reach the oil filter without ramping the car up. With wheels turned to left and car off, cooled, and parked, you can see the filter from peeking your head just in front of the front driver-side tire. You may have to lie on your back to reach up to remove it just to get the leverage, but it's a softball sized cylinder shaped piece that screws on.

Are you familiar with Fords and their displaying of low oil pressure? Most that I have ever known, will barely show a reading. Why is this? Heck, I guess no one knows- it's a mystery. But you can rebuild an engine, and the oil pressure will show about half across the guage, and within a month's time it will have tapered off to nothing. Strange, but that is how it is. the oil sending unit is defective
