A few simple answers here... That oil is from the crankcase vent tube that comes in at the bottom of the box. It helps crankcase fumes to vent and get burned in the engine to reduce emissions. Several things cause the oil to come in. 1. too much oil in the engine/crankcase... (very common). 2. a plugged pcv (pos. crankcase ventilation) valve. normally located on the top of the engine on the valve cover. 3. high mile engines get some "blow by" thru the rings of the cylinders. this excessive compression gas gets into the crankcase at the bottom, then has to push out thru the vent tube at the top and takes some oil with it. Make sure your crankcase venting system is clear and clean. A plugged system can cause pressure buildup and it has to push out somewhere. eventually you can blow engine mainseals at both the front but mainly the back between the engine and tranny. An expensive repair bill there...

Less than two months ago, I purchased a used 1997 Ford Ranger XLT, Regular Cab (2.3 L I-4, 5 spd.). Shortly after the purchase, the check engine light came. I had the code read at a local auto parts store, and the code P1443 was returned. The description for the code was "Evaporative Emission Control System Control Valve". Initially, I didn't do anything to fix the problem. The light ended up clearing itself a couple of days after it first came on. However, the light only stayed off for a few driving cycles before it came back on (and stayed on). I had the code read again, and again I got the P1443 code.

I did some research on the web and found that the problem could be the Canister Purge Assembly. This assembly connects the intake manifold to the charcoal canister and the assembly is made up of hoses, a valve and a sensor. On my 1997 Ranger, it is located near the front of the engine compartment on the driver's side (the canister is right behind the driver's side headlight). Apparently, if there are any cracks in the hoses, or if the valve or the sensor wears out, this will cause the check engine light to come on, and return the P1443 code. After looking around on the web for a couple of days, I was lucky enough to find a few part numbers for the canister purge solenoid/flow sensor assemblies:

After trying to get the part at a few different auto parts stores, I made a trip to the dealer to order the part. It ended up costing about $65 (although, I have heard it can cost $80 - $100 depending on the exact part number that you need). It only took 5 or 10 minutes to install the part, and it was fairly simple. Initially, I started the truck and the check engine light was still on. However, the light cleared itself after a few driving cycles and it has stayed off ever since (it has been about 5 weeks and 1500 miles).

Hopefully this helps someone who had the same problems that I did. From my experience, and from what I have found in my research, if you get the P1443 code on a late 90's Ranger, this is the way to fix it. Hopefully you will be able to use the part numbers above to order your parts (I am not sure where on the web I originally got the part numbers from, but I did use them to order the part that I needed). I believe this is a part that you can only get at a dealer, so you may not even want to waste time trying to order it from the auto parts stores. I would rate this as a fairly easy thing to replace as long as you have some knowledge about working on cars and trucks. However, if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, you may want to ask for help from a friend who is knowledgeable before you spend the money to have someone else do it.

It is located in the air filter box where the electrical connecter plugs in the side. You will have to remove the air box and remove the cover on the inside and you will find the mass air flow sensor. It can be easily removed by slipping a flat head screwdriver through the slots one both sides and prying up.

We just purchased a 1998 Tracer and the fuse boxes are under the hood on the driverside and under the dash on the driverside. Hope that helps. The Owners Manual will have details on the fuses - since you just bought the vehicle, you may need to download a free version of the manual (save $$ from having to buy one!).

Follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine block. The point where the hose connects to the engine is where the thermostat is typically located.

I had the same problem with my '93 Mercury Tracer. If you look under the hood, you should see the catalytic converter at the bottom, on top of that is a heat shield thing, just simple bend that back a bit, and it should fix the "Griding noise." At least, that's what I did to fix my problem.

insufficient egr flow.

60%of mercury's do this with a bad dpfe sensor. replace if for good measure, it's bound to go out some time even if it is not right now. you'll need to buy soem hoses for it too, the replacement dpfe isn't shaped the smae as the old one, and requires an extra inch or 2 on the hose to the ref port (you'll see, it's labeled that way on the sensor)

30% are because of blocked passages in the egr system. they get full of carbon and soot, and it probably needs cleaned out. you may have to take off your throttle body to find it, it depends on the engine.

Behind the head light itself. is a plastic ring, this screws to the housing around the element. Unscrew it,pull the element out of the head light bezel, unplug the element and install the new one. screw it all back together. you will need no tools.

The switch for the rear wiper is on the same lever as the front wipers. It's a circular switch that turns forward & backward.

You can do it the hard way by removing the gauge cluster in the car, or you can pull the cable out of the speedometer gear in the transaxle. This should give you enough room to pull it out and oil it. I recommend graphite lubricant. Also, make sure you push the cable back into the tube ALL the way, or obviously it won't work at all.
