my 1997 mercury tracer ran hot and now will not start what could be the problem?

On your 1996 MERCURY TRACER, the PCV VALVE is: UNDER HOOD, CENTER, UPPER ENGINE AREA, FRONT DRIVER SIDE OF ENGINE, MOUNTED IN INTAKE MANIFOLD.

I ended up having to have a shop drill into it to get it out. Everything you read says they come right out, but mine didn't.

I had the exact smae issue with 1995 Tracer. It turned out that the Water Pump seized up and ripped a bunch of teath off of the timing belt. I repaced the pump and timing belt and it runs fine.

Try checking the brake light on / off switch. (BOO switch) It's behind the brake pedal, perhaps it's stuck or need replacement. Also, make sure the problem isn't that your brake pedal is so low that it won't come off the switch, if it is then either your brake booster is shot, or you need a pedal adjustment or other brake work.

If your 1997 Mercury Tracer has a battery light that blinks on and off while the car is running, it most likely means that the battery is not charging. This could be an issue with your alternator.

Use an OBDII scanner to retrieve the touble codes. The connector is located under the driver's side dash board.

A speed sensor on a 1998 Mercury Tracer is located on the transmission housing of the vehicle. It is placed on top in a secure location to safely measure the speed the transaxle spins.

Tracer has fuel cut off relay and a sensor which triggers it if the vehicle is in a crash. However these sensors can be triggered by just a hard bump in a parking lot or even lowering fast from a lift. Reset button is in trunk on right wheel well cover. Just press and you're good to go!

I have a '99 Mercury Tracer. Went I bought it, there was an article out that said the 2.0 liter SOHC pushed out 110 hp.

Check the computer for engine codes. Have a tuneup: new plugs, wires (if equipped), fuel filter, air filter. Hopefully that will help, if it doesn't you'll probably have to get it checked somewhere. Could be a failing fuel pump, or clogged injector. A vacuum leak or faulty sensors somewhere.

On a 1997 Mercury Tracer :

The power steering fluid reservoir is at the front of the engine compartment ,

near the passenger side of the engine compartment

( looking from the FRONT of the vehicle it is the reservoir on the RIGHT )

The throttle position sensor (TPS) on a 1994 Mercury Tracer is located towards the driver's side of vehicle, under the hood. Directly to the left of the battery will be an intake air hose with a metal screw-on clamp. This clamp attaches the air hose to the engine's intake manifold. To the left of the clamp with the be the engines TPS assembly.

Remove the belt from your Mercury alternator. Remove the wiring harness from the alternator. Remove the retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install your new alternator.

The location of the belt tentioner is slightly different, but the serpentine belt diagram is the same as the Ford Taurus. I have a '95 Mercury Tracer with a 1.9 liter engine, and the pattern is identical with the '98 Ford Taurus. The 1.9 liter engine used with the Tracer, was used in other Ford models, so a quick cross reference with other Ford vehicles may also help if you ever need help with other problems.

On a 1989 Mercury Tracer , 1.6 liter four cylinder engine :

remove air breather hose to give room, then there a 3 bolts holding distributer on remove them. then you have acess to thermostat housing, there are 3 bolts houlding it on remove then put back together, this is for a 1.9 motor hope it helps.

You'll find it under the hood, driver side, located in black plastic box with other relays and fuses.

Look for a vacuum leak. With the engine idling, anywhere you have a vacuum hose attached, Spray some throttle body cleaner at the connections and see if the engine idle picks up even just a bit. If it does, you have a vacuum leak. After checking if you do not find anything, at least spray some throttle body cleaner in the throttle body and clean the throttle blade up.

Also try the Idle air Control Valve Located on top of your throttle body, or even the throttle position sensor

The 1999 Mercury Tracer was the last model year in North America

( according to one of Fords websites , .054 inch is the spark plug gap on the 1999 Mercury Tracer )

What? If you are wanting to know where to add gear lube to the transmission, then you should be a little clearer with the question. You add lube on the side of the transmission near the top, usually driver's side.
