Who massacred the Druid priests?

Contrary to the previous answer, Christians did Not kill off the Druids

The Romans (another 'Pagan' people) all but wiped out the ancient druids ('educated' class of judges, healers, royal advisors, bards and prophetic seers) for reasons of their own that was probably political due to their influence on the 'Celtic' tribes that were at that time in the process of being conquered.

The bardic tradition part of their ways was carried on for a few centuries and finally died out in the 17th century .

It was revived in the late 17 / early 1800's by the poet William Blake and others

BTW This answer was written by a practicing Pagan who is sick of 'pat' answers that are factually incorrect or just plain wrong

How do you praise the horned god?

The Pagan form...

When I read the question, I assumed you meant the pagan god. The other half of the divinity partnership, with the Great Goddess. In that case, representations of him are gold, the sun, holly and oak.

***********************

The horned God, or better known as Lord Cernunnos. He is God of the wild, of forests, animals, the free human spirit, of abundance and joy. He is usually pictured with great antler horns* like a stag deer holding a cornucopia overflowing and his face is sometimes pictured with oak and acorns. Sometimes also called the Oak King, Pan, Robin Hood, The Green Man.

*These horns, hunted by men to this very day to prove how masculine they are and then hung up on walls are the horns Lord Cernunnos wears. Even in centuries past, hunting down the biggest stag of the forest was a status symbol and still is. Of course the God of the forest would have the biggest stag horns. This image of this God was twisted and turned into fear by creating him into a Christian figure called Satan to turn people from worshiping this God.

There are many Gods and many Goddesses from religions all over the world. If you are looking to pray to a particular God or Goddess, I would read up on them and their history. If you are true to your faith, in time a patron God and Goddess will come to guide you and watch over you.

To Praise:You can praise The Horned One, The Green Man, Cernunnos, you can just pray like the Christians do to their God. You can also worship him in the more traditional pagan way of rituals that include acorns, leaves and other forest bounty. Or you can take a walk in a forest or a park and silently thank Him for the green bounty you see around you. There are many, simple, cheap ways to praise any of the Gods and Goddesses.

Did the traditional burning of the yule log ever signify child sacrifice?

No, a Yule log was a part of the tree used at Beltane (May day) and was on occation part of a rite of passage for boys. The boys were given the task of keeping the Yule fires burning all night on the winter solstice. Once this was successfully completed the boy was accepted and treated as a man of the community.

What is paganism?

What is a Pagan?

Chandra Glick

This was first published in the Newton Kansan daily newspaper in November of 2002.

This article was written so that non-Pagans could have a better understanding of where we are coming from and who we are. Several of my friends and acquaintances have found it useful in sharing their religion/faith with family and non-Pagan friends. If it will help you, please feel free to use it.

The cliche among Pagans is - if you ask that question of twelve of us and you will get at least thirteen answers. Paganism is a non-dogmatic approach to spirituality. Paganism is recognizing that we are a part of nature rather than above and apart from nature. Paganism is basically monotheistic in that many of us recognize a single transcendent divine entity and our gods and goddesses are like Christian angels and saints. Paganism is any non-Abrahamic religion, ie: not Christian, Jewish or Islam. Paganism is essentially private spirituality - not to say that it cannot be practiced with a group. It is having a one to one relationship with your creator without anyone else's structures or controls placed on it. These are answers that I have gotten from Pagans I know who are living in and around Newton.

As you can tell there is no simple answer. There may not even be a single complex answer. One of the features of Paganism is the tolerance of differing ideas. Some traditions (like Christian denominations) may have certain dogmas, but they will not impose their ideas on anyone outside their group. The ethical codes followed by most Pagans are some variation or other of the Golden Rule.

The Pagans of my acquaintance are generally very well educated, highly literate and intelligent individuals. We are also, with but a single exception, well aware of Christian teachings. Most of us were raised Christian and for one reason or other found that it did not meet our spiritual needs. Many of us believe that Jesus existed and we admire his teachings. Our disagreements with Christianity are not with the founder, but rather the direction which churches have taken. As one individual stated, "I studied myself right out of the church."

Paganism is not a single path. It is not a single religion. It encompasses a wide range of beliefs and practices. Most people who identify themselves as Pagans are in actual fact Neopagans, as opposed to say Buddhist, Hindu or Taoist. Neopaganism is a modern attempt to return to ancient pre-Christian generally European forms of worship. Some Neopagans are very scholarly in their approach and go to a particular culture and research literature and archaeology in an attempt to accurately recreate the way the religion of that culture was practiced. Others are more eclectic in their approach. They take the general structure of an ancient religion and adapt it to fit their modern lives, often fitting disparate pieces into what becomes, for them, a cohesive whole.

Despite the variety, there are a few generalizations that can be made, bearing in mind however that no generalization will apply to every Pagan you encounter. There is a recognition of a divine entity or entities. Divinity is seen as immanent in all things. Freedom to follow the path which works for the individual is highly encouraged. Causing unnecessary harm to anyone or anything is frowned upon. The attitude reflected in Jesus statement, "love your neighbor as yourself" is preferred in ourselves and in those we choose to associate with. While sharing ones beliefs with interested people is acceptable, proselytizing is frowned upon.

We respect a Christian's right to follow her or his religion freely. However, most of us have made a conscious decision to follow another path. We ask only that you respect our right to follow our own religion as freely.

If you fear for my soul because that is what your religion teaches, fine. You may pray for me, but do not try to reconvert me. If you must try, the please follow the example of one Fundamentalist Christian of my acquaintance whom I highly respect; live as a shining example of the best your religion has to offer.

What are the 4 corners of paganism?

the north(fire),east (earth, south (water) andwest (air) towers

I've always known them as Earth in the North, Water in the East, Fire in the South, and Air in the West. Some traditions may have different interpretations. Proof positive there are many paths in Paganism In our Circle we use Earth (North), Air (East), Fire (South), Water (West) and Spirit (Center). ANSWER Well in Older traditions the North is Earth because it is the mother earth and the ground and firtiliy (the harvest). The East is for air. Wisdom, understanding. South is for Fire. Passion and determination and loyalty. And West is for Water, compassion, insperation, and beauty.

Are there original transcripts of the book of Thoth?

There are two books which exist with that name. Both of which you can still purchase freely.

The Book of Thoth in Ancient Egyptian Legends by Margaret Murray

The Book of Thoth (Crowley) by Aleister Crowley

If on the other hand you mean the original "book" of Thoth, then no as this is not an actual book, but a mythical creation. Two of the most common tellings of the story are 1) the "book" is actually a series of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs in a pyramid, said to have been placed there by Thoth himself

2) The book was real, and contained powerful spells and knowledge. Legend has it that it was buried with Prince Neferkaptah in the City of the Dead.

A book which you may find useful is "The Ancient Secret of The Flower of Life", by Drunvalo Melchizedek. It goes into more depth regarding the books of Thoth.

Are there any heathen communities in Maryland?

In general, yes, although you would need to provide your own definition of "heathen" in this context. It's a fuzzy and poorly defined word. The person you think is a "heathen" because of your (and his) religious beliefs may well consider YOU the "heathen" by his standards. And probably you are BOTH "heathens" to some other third group.

Do binding love spells work?

The most common rules of witchcraft are that whatever you send out, comes back threefold to you, so if you bind someone, against their will, you may be forced to do 3 things against your will.

It is highly not recommended to do any type of spell against someone's will.

The best and most effective way to do any love spell is to do a generic love spell in which your true love will find you. It may not be the person you originally hoped for, but it will be the way destiny has decreed.

A Pagan Perspective

First, to answer your specific question; yes, binding spells, including binding love spells do work.

Second, as stated above there are a few things to consider before you undertake this sort of thing.

- Are you sure you know what you are doing?

A binding spell removes the option of free will from the one being bound. This is the magical equivalent of kidnapping and forcible confinement (If there is sex involved it is magical rape). Are you sure you want that responsibility and negative karma on your soul? If you still want to go ahead with this spell, do you have ALL of the necessary research done, materials gathered, times figured to the minute, and spell written down? Do NOT use a pre-made, found in a book somewhere spell, if you are serious about this you must do the "homework" yourself.

-What are your true motivations?

Is this a spell you are planning to draw someone that does not feel attracted to you? If so, see above concerning kidnapping, forcible confinement and rape.

Is it for someone (a celebrity) you do not know? If so, see above and think carefully about what you are planning, nice as it might seem just now, binding yourself to someone you do not know well is just plain foolish.

Is this designed to bind you and your girl/boy friend together for eternity because you really think you love one another? The binding of two souls for that long is really not advisable as people change, not just the other person, but you as well. The things you "love" right now will be of less importance in the future and being bound to someone is a far reaching thing.

Is this designed to be part of a handfasting or marriage ceremony? If so, then take a good look at the wording of most such ceremonies. Handfastings are worded "As long as the love shall last." and Christian marriages are worded "Till death do us part." Do you really want to bind yourself to someone for eternity?

- Could this be harmful to anyone? The "Threefold Rule" generally governing the use of magics states "That which you send out will return to you threefold." If you hurt someone else, you will be subject to three times the harm in your own life.

- What will you do when you change your mind? Reversing or breaking a binding spell is extremely difficult, time consuming, and takes an awful lot of your personal power to do it. And you will have to do it or you will leave a wounded soul alone for eternity and at the same time your own soul will be equally bound to that damaged soul.

Was Ireland pagan?

There were many pagans (sometimes referred to as 'Celtics' today) during the earlier days of Ireland. Before organized religions almost all societies of the world were pagan, including the ones who resided in modern-day Ireland. St. Patrick ultimately eliminated the open pagan religion in Ireland, although today it is making a more welcoming appearance in the culture.
