Why does my 97 firebird 3800 misfire under load with out any engine light or codes setting?
You could have a problem with exhaust back-pressure which can stem from a restricted converter. To test for this you can use an exhaust back pressure tester inserted in the upstream 02 sensor. You can also remove the upstream 02 sensor and test drive the car. There should be some improvement in the car's performance under load with the exhaust having a place to go. This will be very noisy, you will not want to run the car like this for too long.
What is the difference between a Pontiac 400 and a Pontiac 455?
The Pontiac 400 has a bore of 4.12 and a stroke of 3.75. The Pontiac 455 has a bore of 4.15 and a stroke of 4.21. The 455 cylinder heads will have larger combustion chambers than the same year 400 heads to achieve comperable compression ratios on the larger engine. The blocks are physically the same size, but 455 has larger main bearings than the 400. 455=3.25 400=3.00, so crankshafts will not interchange. Cams, heads, intakes, exhaust, connecting rods, push rods, rocker arms...etc will all interchange.

How do you change a rotor on a 1985 Pontiac Firebird?
If your talking about a distributor rotor its easy.First pull your cap off and under that is your rotor.Pull up on it,it should pull off.Replace with new one.You cant screw up it only goes on one way.
Now if your talking about a brake rotor. You first have to remove your caliper. Then your rotor should come off.Sometimes you have to hit it with a hammer to loosten it.Do the reverse to install it.
If your talking about a brake rotor, it most likely will not just pop off. pop off rotors are common on most newer cars, but the older ones are bolted on. there is a cap in the center of the spindle, pop that off and remove the cotter pin and bolt and washer and bearing. set these aside in the order you took them off. now the rotor will come right off. You can use the old bearings again, you just have to re-pack them with grease. but if you do reuse the old bearings, make sure you repack them. You will probably have to remove the grease seal in the back of the rotor to get the rear bearing out, and put a new one on the new rotor. reassemble the new rotor just like the old one was and put then nut back on. to tighten the nut, get a pair of channel locks and tighten the nut. then spin the rotor as you loosent the nut slowly and then retighten it. do this about 3-4 times. The nut should not be really tight. If you are unsure of how to do this, please do not try it. The put the cotter pin back in and the cover back on, and reinstall the caliper.
Where is the coolant reservoir drain on a Pontiac Firebird 3.4 v6?
The drain plug should be located on the lower right corner of the radiator, it is about the size of a nickel with raised ribs that form a cross. You should attach a rubber hose to the radiator drain before opening the drain plug, this keeps antifreeze from splashing out. Antifreeze is a corrosive, that will burn your skin, and destroy your body paint.

What's is the biggest engine you can fit into a 2000 Pontiac Firebird 3.8 just doesn't cut it?
A 350 will easily fit but you could install a larger engine with major modifications. Stick with a 350 which was the optional engine in Firebirds. You will have to change the ECU also, so a donor car would be the easiest. If I were in your shoes, I would sell this Firebird and purchase one with a 350 already installed. You would be money ahead in the long run.
I have been looking for the answer to the same question and what I have found out is.... A cracked ring.. or I was just told today that there is a bypass in the motor that can get clogged. I was told to drain the oil and refill with 3 qts. of oil and 2 qts of diesel fluid. then let run for 20 min. and change the oil. If it was clogged this should open it up. Does anyone have any comments or recommendations on this?
