I had the same problem and changed out the brake silinoid that's located on the brake pedal under the dash and thought that solved it to find two day's later the same problem so I took down the middle console to find out that the engage rod in the shifter was not releaseing and that the shift lock wasn't releaseing either so I just purchased a whole nother gear shifter and problem solved.==Frustrateing but beat's running it to the shop
I've had a similar problem and while the problem was difficult to figure out, the solution was an easy fix:
The car would not come out of park unless I used a key or something to manually push in the override button. Then when placed back in park the ignition didn't want to release the keys. After taking the car to the dealership (and paying WAY too much) I found-out it was a faulty brake switch. Try replacing it, it's a safety issue.
Answer ==
I believe there may be an electrical problem. I want to say a possible ignition switch.
AnswerNo,I dont believe that it is electrical,I had the same problem one day and was kinda freaked out by it,took about 15 minutes but,I think what I did was,if you look just to the right of the shifter there is a little gray cover, about 1/2 inch wide, take that off and push in on it and that seems to be how I got mine to go into gear,if there are any more comments on this please add them cuz it was pretty weird, didnt really see any reason for it... Answeron my '97 Grand Prix LE, there is a mechanical lever inside the shifter cover. i got access by taking out the little "catch-all" cubby-hole in front of the shifter (floor shift, automatic). i reached my left hand almost down to the end of the shifter and there's an "L" shaped plastic lever on the passenger side. you've got to have your foot on the brake (as usual), push the little lever toward the driver's side, it just barely moves but then you can shift from park. there's something else down there you can do if you can't get the key out of the ignition switch cuz it won't go all the way to take the key out. i figured it out once, now i can't remember how i did it.How much should it cost to have an oil pan gasket replaced on a 1998 grand prix?
do it yourself and its like 30 bucks pay a mechanic and maybe 75
Can a small crack be fixed in a '93 Grand Prix radiator without buying a new one?
I do know of a solution to this problem. If the crack is just a small one there is a tablet you can get at any Automotive Repair store. It's called Radiator Repair its a small "tablet" you drop in your radiator and let the car run, as it warms up you will notice the crack disappear. Other than that JB Weld is a good bet if you know where the leak is generating from.
Where is the Charcoal canister location on a 99 grand prix?
The Charcoal canister for a 99 Grand Prix Gt in in the drivers rear tire well. you have to remove wheel and then a plastic cover to get to it.
I have found no lock sockets in the scrap yards. I am told dealer has them. I am also told MAC has a tool that turns on the stud and mills down the nut. Knowing MAC it would be expensive. I found I could take a 3/8" drive spark plug socket a 12 point socket (the kind with a 3/4" head on the drive end) and a rusty old set of feeler guages. Cut several of the old guages in half and stuff them all together on one side of the socket. Stick them behind the rubber insert that fits over the spark plug. This will hold the shims in place. It will take about an 1/8" of shim, add more or less as needed. Hold the socket with vise grips so you do not hammer on your fingers. Drive it over and onto the lock nut. Be carefull to wear safety glasses. Hammer it on tight. Now take a 4 way lug nut tool (tire iron) and slowly turn counterclockwise. If it slips take the vise grips and wiggle it off and add more shim. Try again. Start with less shim and add more until it fits, too much shim might break the socket. Just do not give it a quick jerk, apply even pressure as you turn. Once loose use the tire iron to wiggle the socket back and forth to loosen the socket, pull it off with the vise grips, then unscrew the lug nut by hand. This works.
all i did on mine was take a 4 way find a size on it that looks like it would fit on there if you were to hit it with something and hit it with a hammer and once its on there give it a turn and it should come loose it worked for me once it is loose wiggle the 4 way off of the locking lug and move on to the next one
if you can put a pairof vise grips on the nut. then stand on the vise grips. you will have to replace the nut but you can get it off
How long does a Pontiac grand prix transmission run for?
As with any "How long does 'x' last" question, when concerning automobiles, it depends greatly on how you take care of them. If you change the fluid (in an automatic) every 50,000 miles or so, they can last a very long time. If you neglect it then good luck getting 100,000 miles out of it. It also depends on what type of conditions the transmission is subjected to. Stop and go driving, as well as pulling a trailer, or mountainous terrain will be much harder on a transmission.
It is currently owned by Boomers
How do you change a front axle on a 2002 Pontiac grand prix?
Take the tire off
remove the axle nut
remove the pinch bolt and remove the ball joint from the spindle
Push the end of the axle through the spindle"center of brake rotor"
that might require a hammer and punch, be careful not to ruin threads
carefully pry the axle from transmission, this may take some force
while holding the axle and moving the rotor/spindle out of the way, pull the axle out
reverse to install, making sure to properly torque all bolts and nuts to the recommended specs. failure to do so can result in an accident. Use thread lock on the ball joint pinch bolt for added safety.
How do you change intake manifold gasket on a 1998 Pontiac grand prix with a 3.1 engine?
It would be best if you got the Chilton's manual for your car. This is a fairly complicated task on the 3.1. Not at all impossible, but you have to mess with a lot of things. You'll need to take off the throttle body. Remove the alternator and power steering pump, unbolt the upper plenum. Remove the fuel lines, fuel rail and injectors. Remove valve covers and loosen rocker arms. The push rods go through the gasket and will need to be removed to R & R the lower intake gasket. Keep the push rods in order as they are different lengths for intake and exhaust. Remove lower intake manifold bolts. Reverse the procedure to install.
What type of power steering fluid does a 1978 Pontiac grand prix need?
Most of the time people just used Dexron III automatic transmission fluid. If the fluid in yours is red....or maybe even turned brown I'd bet it is Dex fluid.
What is horsepower rating on a Pontiac 400?
That varies greatly depending on the year of production, carb, etc. The highest factory rated 400s were the 1969-1970 Ram Air IV at 370HP@5500rpm. Later smog versions produced after 1974 were as low as 170HP with the two barrell carb. Google "wallace racing" their web site it has a great engine search feature, will tell you specs of your exact model.
Is it ok to install a remote car starter into a 2002 Pontiac grand prix?
I was told that you can install them but you have to buy a new key from the dealer so the chip can be used out of it. They would basically destroy the key so they can use the chip in the remote starter kit. They have to do this because the cars anti-theft system needs the chips info to start and stay running without doing a theft engine kill. The keys from the dealer are about $200- $300 dollars each and they are the only ones that can make them.
The "chip" that is in the key itself is really a resistor. Alot of times they have to measure it and have to install it into the ignition system in order to get the car to start and run. Give it a try.
When modding a GTP and changing the supercharged pulley, you will want to go with a 3.4" pulley. If you do this, however, you will want some supporting mods to reduce knock retard in the engine, which retards your ignition timing and reduces the power output of the engine. Supporting mods for a 3.4" pulley would be a K&N cone intake, which you can make yourself, colder spark plugs, a 180 degree thermostat, and a little exhaust work would help, also. Just a u-bend removal and a 3" downpipe would work.
Answer 2You really need to plan out your modding strategy. If you just start throwing parts on your car chances are you're going to be in for some real headaches.Knock is very detrimental to these engines. You need a scanning tool to find where your engine is at the moment before modding. Then check afterwards, you may need additional modding in order to keep your motor from blowing up, even from just a small change in pulley size. There are many people that have gone down this road. Learn from their mistakes and do it the right way from the begining.

ANSWER FROM oogpgtp
I went with a 3.4 pully swap on my 2000 gtp but first I added a cat back 3in exhaust, k&n cold air intake, MSD ignition coils and wires, and most importantly a transmission cooler to keep the heat down. These mods cost about $ 1300 and really woke my beast up. To change the pully you'll need a proper pully tool. I bought a gm tool off eBay for about $100.
Where is the PCV valve located on a 2001 grand prix gtp supercharger?
For all GTPs 1997-2003, the first step is to remove the cosmetic supercharger cover. At the rear of the motor, on the driver's side of the vehicle, there is a small plate etched with "PCV." Use a small socket and ratcher to unscrew the two bolts, and the PCV valve will be exposed. The PCV valve may stick, so you may need needlenose pliers. Remove the valve, and do not lose the corresponding spring. Simply put the new valve with the spring in and reinstall. Hope this helps!
What is the drive cycle of a Pontiac Grand Prix?
I believe that there were rear wheel drive grand prixs until the 90s at which point they changed to front wheel drive
Why does my 2006 Grand Prix make a whining sound when I make a turn and continues when accelerating?
Check your power steering fluid. If its low top it off if it goes away that's great but get it to a garage because power steering fluid wont just vanish, if its low its leaking. If fluid is full you most likely will need a power steering pump.
The type of noise you are talking about can be made from low fluid which causes air to get into the pump causing it to make a "whrrrrr" ing like noise. However the internals of the pump itself can start to fail also and make this same noise.
When accelerating the pump spins faster causing the noise to increase. When making a turn you are increasing the load on the pump making it work harder to assist you in turning which also will cause it to get louder.
How do you take apart 2002 grand prix dashboard?

How do you replace the ignition switch on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix?
The ignition switch is on the steering column about 18 inches above the floor and is secured by 2 screws.
The answer below is correct BUT< <<>>> Stop at step #4 and try and start it up.It always works on my 03 Grand Am GT. As for bypassing the Passlock, you need a module that's sold in the USA to do that, costs about $100...Happy trails from Crazyted
HOW CAN I BYPASS SECURITY SYSTEM ON A 2000 GRAND PRIX GT - CAR WILL START FOR 2 SECONDS AND CUT OFF - ALL 3 KEYS (INCLUDING VALET KEY) WILL NOT WORK
Not to add to the questions, but I have had the same problem with my 2003 Pontiac Grand Am GT. This is what I've learned over the last 26 hours. The PassLock security feature in these cars becomes unstable over time. Some of the contributing issues include worn keys (yes your car key being worn out can cause this issue), the wires to your BCM (Body Control Module) located behind the black plastic "kick plate" under your glovebox may be disconnected, frayed, damaged, or corroded (these little black boxes are about $400). Before you head out and start spending cash like you've got it... try these simple steps to make certain that it isn't' a "learning issue" with your car's computer system.
1) Try to start the car and let the key rest in the "ON" position. If the "SECURITY" light is on or blinking, leave it be and continue to next step.
2) Leave the key in the "ON" position for 15 minutes (they recommend 10, but why take a chance of missing it by a few seconds and having to restart the entire process again).
3) Turn the key to the "OFF" position, but leave it in the ignition and wait 5 seconds.
4) Turn the key back to the "ON" position, but don't try to start. Let set for another 15 minutes.
5) Turn the key back to the "OFF" position and wait another 5 seconds.
6) Turn the key back to the "ON" position and wait 15 more minutes. DO NOT TRY TO START YET>
7) Turn the key back to the "OFF" position for yet another 5 seconds.
8) NOW turn the key "ON" and try to start. If the BCM has learned the new value for the resistor in your key, it will fire up without any further issues.
NOW.... If this does NOT work... you've got the same issues that I have. I've received numerous suggestions on what to do from this point. Here is a list of the possible culprits, starting with the easiest and least expensive.
1) Fuses (check them all, both sides of the dash panels and under the hood)
2) You can actually bypass the BCM by pulling out the middle wiring harness and isolating the black and yellow wires. Expose a small portion of each by cutting away the wire insulation and soldering a 2.2k resistor (should be easily found at Radio Shack for under 2 bucks). Solder the ends to each wire and wrap with electrical tape. You've just bypassed the $400 PassLock system and fooled your car into accepting the new value. You'll have to do the same procedure as above for the computer to learn the new value, but it does work on 97% of the vehicles they've tried this on.
3) Replace the BCM, mine is made by Delphi and they are VIN specific, so you'll need to take your vehicle's id number with you to the dealership. They cost about $400 and are easy to replace (3 wiring harnesses snap onto the top and are color coded). This fixes almost all of the issues and doesn't leave that annoying "SECURITY" light on.
Hope this helps and if you have ANY questions, please feel free to contact me at CaptAdams35@hotmail.com with "PONTIAC" in the subject line.
ok you have to check the ohms on the key for reistance ( so 2.2 wont always work and you may need to put a relay in so the resistance goes on and off like you were removeing the key since some computers will think you left the key in the ignition and will keep it from starting or running)
I have a 2000 grand prix gt and all it takes is pulling out the right fuse located in the glove box. There should be a diagram in there that tells you which one it is.
How much would it cost to replace a rear axle on a 2004 grand prix?
if i remember right a 2004 grand prix is a front wheel drive motor so it wouldn't have a read axle just rear wheel bearing
