The mechanical advantage is the ratio of the distance your hand moves to the distance the piston travels. For instance, if the lever is 21" long and a full rotation of the level produces a piston travel of 7" then your hand would move 2*pi*21" (131.9"). The ratio 131.9:7 reduces to 18.8:1. If you wanted to produce 1 ton (2000 lbs) of force on the piston you have to appy 106 lbs on the 21" lever.

Squeeky noise? This seems to be a common problem/complaint for this car. I had the dealer look at this on mine a while back, he said he "adjusted the drive belt" and the noise went away for about a week. Spraying lubricant around the pulleys makes the noise go away for a couple days (not recommended). Changing the drive belt, and water pump, did NOT make the noise go away. The most common solution is simply to tighten the belt! It is quite common that a mechanic (even the dealer mechanic) may not tighten the belt enough, or that the belt loosens slightly after it is installed and or tightened. Tightening this belt is very easy, you will need a 12mm socket wrench and a 14mm open end wrench. Loosen (do not remove) the two bolts above the alternator that are attached to the metal bracket that allow the alternator to slide (the alternator is attached to the topmost pulley that the drive belt touches, it is at the top front passenger side of the engine compartment). There is a 3rd bolt below the alternator, slightly difficult to see, loosen it using the 14mm wrench, it is often difficult to turn, I recommend penetrating oil and a breaker bar, you only need to turn it a little bit to allow the alternator to pivot. Once all three bolts are loose, you can easily rock the alternator back and forth (same procedure is used to replace the drive belt). To reinstall or tighten the belt you need to pull the alternator toward the front of the car as far as possible. The best way to do this is by putting a pry bar on top of and slightly behind the alternator and pushing up toward the windshield while using the engine as a pivot - this gives you plenty of leverage and allows you to pull the alternator forward. While you are prying, you can tighten the bolt that holds the alternator to the bracket using your left hand as you brace the pry bar with your right hand, to hold it all in place. It is possible that the power steering belt (bottom of engine compartment) needs replaced or adjusted as well. I haven't changed my power steering belt yet because from what I've read its a difficult job and I don't feel like paying someone to do it since its not critical to function or safety. The main drive belt is easy to change. Another possible source of noise could be a worn bearing connected to any of the pulleys touching the belt (air conditioner compressor, water pump, alternator). If replacing or tightening the belts doesn't do the trick, try to isolate the noise by using a mechanics stethoscope or funnel.

Push the panel with your hand to expose a spring clip on the backside of handle. There is a special tool to remove this ,but a small flat blade screwdriver will work. Push out the clip and the handle will come off. When you are ready to replace the handle, start the clip onto the handle half-way so all you have to do when the handle is in place is to tap the clip and it will snap in place.

Should be self-adjusting unless tensioner is bad

get a tensionier bar from the auto store. Place it the hole or around the nut moves the tensioner, either up or down.

It's not easy. In my case the biggest problem was keeping the engine from turning while putting over 1000 ft-lbs of torque on it, to get it off. I ended up having to make my own tool. If you've got more money than time, or you're without the proper tools (lathe and mill), it's probably worth it to just buy the Special Service Tool from Toyota. Unfortunately the balancer doesn't have any large holes through it, through which you could jam a large screwdriver or whatever. And all you have to grip on is the 3/8" tall "spokes" that run from the center to the outside, through which the two puller holes go.

But I like working with metal, so here's what I did: I used my lathe to create a ring out of 1/4" plate steel, whose outside diameter is small enough to fit within inside diameter of the balancer, and whose inside diameter was big enough to accommodate the pulley bolt and its socket. Then cut a 3/4" bar of steel square stock long enough to fit the outside diameter of the ring. I used my mill to cut a slot in the bar along it's long side, wide enough accommodate the "spokes". Then I welded the bar onto inside of the ring (the side that contacts the balancer), with the slot facing toward the balancer, to fit over the spokes. Then I used the lathe again to cut the middle out of the bar. (I did this because I worried that if I cut the bar and welded the two pieces on separately, I'd never get it to line up properly on both sides of the ring.) Then I drilled two holes through the ring and the bar, to fit the two bolts from the harmonic balancer puller. You have to measure these carefully and get them straight - have to use a drill press or a mill - or you'll never get them to line up. I then welded a piece of square tubing onto the outside of the ring. I used the bolts from my harmonic balancer puller to bold the thing on (the bolts were too long so I had to make some spacers out of round tubing), put a steel bar through the tubing on the outside of the ring so the crank wouldn't turn.

I then had to use a breaker bar with an 8 foot cheater pipe to get it off. I estimate I had to put around 1000 foot pounds of torque on the bolt to get it to crack loose. Which is strange because the service manual says to torque it to 159 ft-lbs.

To replace the tension pulley on a 1998 Oldsmobile Regency, start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal to ensure safety. Use a wrench to relieve tension on the serpentine belt by turning the tensioner pulley, then remove the belt from the tension pulley. Unscrew the mounting bolts securing the tension pulley and replace it with the new one. Finally, reinstall the serpentine belt and reconnect the battery terminal.
