How do you replace the thermostat located on a 1997 Chevy Cavalier?

the thermostat is located behind the water pump. there are 2 8mm bolts holding it in. unscrew, pull old thermostat out, put new one in and put back together. Simple - 9 I would have given it a 10 but the bottom bolt can be a pin to get to.

Your temperature gage wont heat up is this the thermostat 93 grand am se?

even if the thermostat is stuck open the vehicle will warm up to operating temp eventualy. the gauge should move. if the gauge don't move at all the problem may be the gauge itself or the sending unit. to test your system perform the following test. ground the wire to the temperature sending unit. this should cause the gauge to read hot(if is a light it'll glow) if NOT, the circuit before the sending unit is faulty. if the gauge functions the sending unit may be bad.(in order to see result, after grounding turn on the ignition switch.) if you need to find the location for the sending unit try going to www.autozone.com and enter your vehicles info. go to vehicle specs./components location

What does it mean when your radiator starts steaming while it is running?

If it's the RADIATOR that's steaming it probably means that you have a leaky radiator. If the cap is steaming it might just mean that you need to replace the radiator cap, but it could mean that the engine is overheating. Check the coolant level and make certain that you do not see evidence of leakage anywhere around the engine or radiator. After the engine has cooled, look for light green powder around the edges of the radiator and around the water pump. This is evidence of leakage.

Can you tie a cast iron radiator into a fin tube loop?

Yes, but be sure to install a small automatic air vent in the small tapping on the top at either end.

Can you use a kerosene fired jet engine styled heater and an automotive type radiator combination to heat an above ground pool if the heater is 70000 BTU output and radiator is 4 row tubes?

CorrectionOops, the heater is 110,000 BTU not 70,000 as originally stated. Follow UpThis combination while rather crude and noisy (sounds like a jet plane is flying overhead constantly) works rather well. The heat transfer from the jet heater through the automotive radiator is amazing. The heated air entering the radiator is about 500+ degrees and when it exits the other side of the radiator, it is only about 100 degrees. The system is fed with a separate 1.5 HP pool pump using my spare vaccuum hoses draped over the sides of the pool, each having a vaccuum head on them to weigh them down the intake hose is on the bottom of the pool and the heated discharge hose is on the opposite side of the pool also at or on the bottom of the pool.

Admittedly this is a rather "Rube Goldberg" set-up, but the results are impressive:

18 foot round by 4 foot deep pool, start temperature (with solar cover that has blue on one side and silver on the other) was 71.2 degrees. After 8 hours (two separate 4 hour runs 24 hours apart) the temperature of the pool was 92.1 degrees. Outside ambient air temperatures were in the low 80's during the day and high 50's at night. Pool lost approximately 2.5 degrees of heat overnight. Now pool can be maintained at 85 degrees with a daily burn of heater for less than 1 hour run time. Cost of operation is about $4.00 an hour for the kerosene (at 2.80 a gallon) and electric to run second pump and heater. I am still doing a cost analysis as compared to a purchase of either a 9KW electric heater vs. a 150,000 BTU heat pump vs. a gas or oil fired heater and the various energy sources required to operate them.

How do you tell if you've overfilled your radiator and what are the consequences of doing so?

On older cars / trucks that do not have a coolant recovery tank you should fill the radiator to approximately one inch below the opening. ( when the engine is COLD } On more modern cars / trucks that have a coolant recovery tank, the radiator should be completely filled and the recovery tank should be filled to the full cold mark. You should only do this when the engine is cold to avoid personal injury. Why is the cooling system low? A pressure test should be performed and all leaks repaired.

What do you if your car overheats because when you depress the accelerator the water hose to the radiator closes in?

The hose is soft and mushy inside. Replace the hose. Possible clogged radiator. Replace the hose first.

You also might have a clogged radiator core. Have a reputable radiator shop check and flush your cooling system.

What can cause both radiator fans to not come on?

I have a 1988 oldsmoble cutless cirra wih same problem I have replaced the colant fan switch and the coolant fan relay but to no avail have not solved this problem however the fan on the back side of the radiator does come on when I turn the key off but the fan on the front side of the radiator never comes on any help yet??? You might need a diode wire. *You may have a blockage in the coolent system which can prevent the flow of the hot coolent to the radiator fan switch. Check the temprature of the upper and lower radiator hoses carefully by touch. If the one of the hoses is cool while the other is hot there may be a blockage.

Where is the radiator drain plug for a 2000 Chevy Cavalier?

It will be located on the bottom of the raditor or at some other low point on the cooling system.

To be more specific, on my 2003 Cavalier it is located near the very bottom driver's side of the radiator, and is on the front of the radiator, not behind it. The plug is just a small white plastic button about the size of a nickel as I recall. The plug is hidden by the front air dam, and you can just see the plug if you look at an angle to the right through the right side air dam vent. You have to reach up and in to get at the plug. Its not a straight shot from the outside. A small hexagon Allen wrench is needed to open the plug, but a large short screwdriver can be used to close the plug. Its plastic, so don't use a lot of force. Go slowly, take it easy.

The plug does not come off the radiator. You just turn it enough for it to pop out a little, and the radiator fluid flows out. The vacume in the radiator system is very strong, so I had to remove the radiator reservoir fill cap up above in order for the fulid to flow out.

When I drained the fluid, only about 3 quarts out of a total 8 quarts actually came out, so its not a total change by any means. I hate to use a garden hose to flush the system, since my tap water has high mineral content. I'll just drain 3 quarts every year, and feel that the fluid is pretty near to being new and clean. I use the pink fluid and distilled water, so it should be clean.

Radiator fans turn on when temperature gauge near overheating?

radiator fan is supposed to turn on before over heating to draw more air thru radiator and over engine to assist with cooling if fan is not turning on soon enuff , you need a new lower temp fan switch

How to repair radiator fans when not coming on?

you need to find out if its the fans are bad or is the coolant temp censor bad or thermostat or if there is air in system

Answerone fan is intermittent and only comes on when the engine reaches ideal temperature. the other only comes on when you turn on the AC. check fuses.

Answer

I had the same problem with my 1997 Mitsubishi ecplise. The shop tried to tell me that it is going to be alot of money to replace the temp sensor that is inside the head. We fixed it another way by wireing a switch to the sensor and we can turn the fans on when we need to, but it is just best to just keep them on when ever you turn your car on.

Where is the radiator drain plug located and how do you get at it?

Generic answer.

Most drain plugs are at the lowest point of the radiator.

if no plug is fitted, you will need to remove the bottom hose to drain the radiator.

Can you take a car seat on an aircraft?

Yes. It is highly recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and other professional organizations that children under the age of 4 and who weigh less than 40 pounds be properly secured in a car seat on an airplane. Each car seat has a label that indicates whether it is approved for use on an aircraft so make sure the car seat you are using has this label, as the airline will check for it as well (most rear-facing and forward-facing car seats with a harness are approved; booster seats are not because the airline has lap-only seat belts and booster seats require a lap/shoulder seat belt). Also, check the airlines policy on using a car seat before you arrive to depart. Because of seating space, the airline might have maximum width limits for the car seat. While the FAA allows children less than 2 years to be held by a parent while in flight, it is very dangerous and places your child at great risk of injury. Turbulence is the greatest threat to an unsecured child on an airline. With strong enough forces, a parent cannot hold onto their child and they become a flying projectile. Think about we... airlines secure luggage, laptop computer and even the coffee pot but they allow our most precious possessions to be held unsecured and at risk of injury and death. To provide the optimum safety for your child during flight, secure them in a child safety seat.

Why is exhaust coming out of your radiator?

condensation OR blown head gasket. Is it losing water in the radiator? If so, check the compression.

from condensation from setting overnight,or a cracked head or blown head gasket if U are losing water from the radiator.I no water loss U probably have a very tight exhaust system that nas no leaks-& that's OK.
