Shocks and Struts

There may be a problem with your braking system. Electronically, you are most likely getting a code from the ABS system. Have the brakes inspected by a professional. It might be as simple as a bad ABS sensor or a lose wire, but it might be something more. You won't know for certain until it is checked over.

If the brakes have been checked and everything checks out fine, reset the computer by disconnecting the battery at the negative terminal, wait five minutes, reconnect. If the code appears again, then there is probably a fault somewhere still in the braking system.

When you drive the car, the wheel spins. It is attached through a round thing, called a bearing, to a rigid object called a spindle or a knuckle. The spindle has to be able to move up and down to allow for bumps in the road and if it's a front wheel (or rear wheel with 4 wheel steering) it has to be able to turn for steering.

The spindle is attached to the vehicle in at least three points to hold it steady. An upper control arm attaches to the spindle at the top of the spindle and keeps if from moving in a left/right direction. On some (but not all) vehicles it can also keep it from moving forward/backward and can push the spindle down and car up. It is usually attached to the spindle via a ball joint.

The rear shocks on a Pontiac G6 are replaced by supporting the rear axle on jack stands, removing the wheels, and unbolting the shocks. New shocks can then be put in place and bolted on.

The corner of the car where the shock (damper) is worn will oscillate more vigourously. Will bounce more easily (about twice up & down) when pressed down on.

I just replaced my back driver's side shock on my 98 Inifinti QX4 last night. Jack up the car at the back differential. Take the tire off and unbolt the shock at the top (you may have to unscrew the plastic in the inside of the wheel well). Then proceed to unbolt the shock at the bottom (you will need a crescent wrench to hold one side while you undo the other side with an impact gun or socket set). I would recommend using an impact gun because the bolts are tight and in hard to reach places. Once your done removing the old shock, bolt the new shock at the top then cut the wire or plastic holding it compressed. It gets tricky because the shock will start to decompress and you have to get it to fit into the lower connector and get the bolt through it, while it is pushing out. I was really worried that the shocks were going to be under much pressure, but they did not have that much and would extend slowly. I

a car can potentially have both shocks and struts. I don't know how common this is, but a car could have shocks in the front and struts in the back or vice versa. that is, depending on the combination, a car could have both, but I have never seen this.

The strut consists of a damper and a spring (shock).

Midas told me $600 plus $90 for an alignment. I'm thinking this is overpriced.

Take the price of one shock, add it to the price of one strut, and multiply by four.

Yes there is no difference in any suspension parts except the z24 will have a sway bar. so the struts and springs will fit.

The car is leveling itself out. You can test this theory by letting that noise stop. Then jumping on the bumper will make it unlevel and you will hear the noise again.

There is a few place you can find a diagram if a strut assembly. You can find a strut assembly diagram online or at an auto part store.

Our everyday air has thousands of particles suspended in it. Many of these are man-made, though typically they are naturally present

The Struts are the shock absorbers that include the spring. They are commonly referred to as McPherson Struts. Most cars now have Struts on the front and rear instead of the simple shock absorbers.

Moisture or something causing corrosion maybe. Try some wd-40.

To change the front strut it is not hard at all. Simply remove the tire, remove the break, remove the bottom bolts from the strut. Then remove the top bolt from the strut. Usually takes about 20-40 minutes to remove. Replacing is very simple as well. However, the front strut replacement will require a front-end alignment to be completed.

Support the bike so there's no weight on the rear wheel, then remove the top & bottom shock nuts and slip the shocks off. That's all there is to it.

should last at least 50,000 miles. i have 95000 and they are mostly ok, but i'm picky. i see others posting 200,000 miles... 30,000 would be totally wasting money

Really easy, remove all the top bolts in engine compartment ,then disconnect bottom of strut. Now jack vehicle up and let the strut slide out.
