Shocks and Struts

Shocks and struts are important parts of a vehicle’s suspension. Shocks are designed to absorb the impact, while struts support the load of an object such as the chassis of a car. These components are designed to soften the ride.

How much are shocks for Nissan Pathfinder?

Typically from $850.00 to $1000.00 depending on the hourly rate of the mechanic. I had mine replaced and had a few quotes from different mechanics. Nissan seemed to have the higher rate. This is in the southern California region, though I am sure it is similar elsewhere.

How much to replace front end struts on a 1991 Toyota Previa?

Depends who does it. It could take upto 3 hours of labour and struts start around £65 for gas replacements. Oil filled struts are better but dearer.

What does a strut look like?

A strut looks like a shock absorber inside a coil spring.

What are the signs that you need new struts?

The struts on your vehicle are designed to absorb the bumps and dips in the roadway to give you with smooth comfortable ride. Worn or damaged struts can cause problems like tire wear and bad handling. You should check your struts at least once a year for any signs of damage or wear.

Check your tires for signs of cupping, excessive wear on the middle or both sides of the tires.

Check for fluid leakage from the struts.

Walk to each corner of your vehicle and push down on the bumper and release. It shouldn't bounce more than once.

Drive the vehicle and check for any signs of excessive dipping when stopping and check for drifting or swaying.

When should you replace the struts on a Honda CR-V?

There is no certain mileage - it all depends on your driving conditions and how you drive the vehicle. If it spends its life on paved roads - a long time. If it is continually driven on rough terrain - sooner than usual. Ask a mechanic to check them for you if you are unable to tell yourself.

How can you trace a vacuum leak on a 2001 Saturn sl?

The way I do this is old school.

Examine all vacum lines, conections, Ts lines and accessories.

Start car and listen, sit in drivers seat with door closed and listen with stereo and heater off, turn heat on fan on lowest setting, change to all heat cool and defrost, foot and AC outlet settings.

If by now you have not heard a hiss from a leak then the next step must be performed outdoors on a fairly wind calm day. Take a propane plumbers torch. Turn it on so it leaks propane with out lighting it. Move slowly past intake gaskets, vacume lines and accessories. The engine note will change for a split second.

Good Luck

How do you replace struts on a 1991 Dodge Dynasty?

there are three bolts on the top of the strut tower. There are two bolts going through the bottom. There are also the brake line brackets. Just remove all of those, and pull off the strut. if you have the cartridge only, you will nees a spring compressor to swap that. To install it, just put everything back... TIGHT. You will need an alignment when finished, the camber will be screwed.

Why is my rear tire rubbing on the shock absorber?

I have had that problem on my 1994 Chrysler LHS. Your strut is actually broken, the pan which holds the spring in place has poor welds and can snap. You should get a new strut.

How do you know if the shocks are bad on a 1988 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur?

They do not use shock dampers on the rear. They use struts and gas springs. If the gas springs go sitting in the back will feel like being pushed in a wheel barrow. Hard and bumpy. You can get new ones from various suppliers like EverythingRollsRoyce.com

Front ones - push the front bumper up and down with your knee a couple of times, then let it bounce. It should stop after one up and down really. If it can't be pushed up and down or it is very low, the damper oil has probably leaked out.

How do you change front struts on 2003 trailblazer?

Place the Trailblazer on jackstands under the frame, remove the tire, open the hood and remove the upper retaining nuts that hold the Strut to the inner fender well. Under no cirumstances remove the larger nut in the center that goes to the Strut shaft.

Remove the nut holding the lower strut mount nut, the mount is a curved arm that comes off the lower end of the strut to the lower A-arm. Place a floor jack under the A-arm and relieve the tension.

Use a Pitman arm removal tool, place around the mount of the lower strut mount and it will release the arm from the bolt, (optional) you can take a brass or rubber mallet and strike the arm which in some cases will pop it off.

Release the tension on the A-arm and lower the strut assembly out of the fenderwell. Either take it to a shop to have the spring removed or rent a spring compressor for Struts specifically and compress the spring yourself, under no circumstaces remove the center nut at the top of the strut unless you have the spring compressed.

Installation is reversed... It is recommended that you have the alignment checked after having the strut replaced. Also I would recommend you purchase either a Chilton or Haynes repair manual as it will help you with most repairs.

How do you replace rear shocks on a dodge Dakota slt ext cab 2wd?

One of the simplest jobs you can do if you have a little mechanical aptitude and the correct size wrenches. Set the parking brake and chock block the wheels and you're good to go underneath and do the work, no jacks or stands required. You could drive the rear up onto blocks as well if you feel that you need more space to work.

Just buy the shocks you want, check that they have all the hardware required (nuts, bolts, and washers), but do not unstrap the shocks yet. Get under the vehicle, and remove the bolts from one of the old shocks (replace only one shock at a time, that way, you can look at the other for reference if necessary). If the bolts are seized, just use a nut splitter on them (less than $10 at most any parts store and a priceless tool to have in your tool box), you won't be reusing any of the old shock hardware. Now you can remove the old shock and put in a new one. If the retaining straps don't run through the 'eyes' of the shock, bolt in one end of the new one (top is usually easiest), making sure it is correctly oriented with the 'fat' end of the shock at the top, before unstrapping the shock and guiding it into place and slipping in the bottom bolt. Otherwise, unstrap the shock, install the top end, and use your strength as described below to install the other end.*Be prepared for the shock to start extending when the strap is removed, it won't shoot out like a rocket but it might not give you too much time to aim it and slip in the bottom bolt* If you miss, don't worry, just use a little strength to compress the shock and try again. Tighten the bolts as directed by any instructions from the new shocks. Repeat the process for the other shock and you're back to riding in comfort.

Will the rear leaf springs on a Comanche fit on a Cherokee?

Good question. Are they the same year, wheel base, automatic, air conditioning, ect? I take it you found a set off a Comanche, and you have a Cherokee? Here is what I would do. Call the dealer and get the part number for the Comanche, then call again and get the price and part number for a Cherokee. If the same, good too go. If not? Good luck

No, they will not. Comanche springs are longer than the Cherokee Springs. While all the front suspension parts are completely interchangeable and identical, the rear is completely different.
