Mr. Hoffman's definintion of terrorism. I believe his association of terroism with violence does not encompass terrorism as a whole. Terrorism is simply an act conducted by either an individual or group to dishearten or drastically affect the psychological state of the intended audience, instill terror. In other words do something so horrific that the other kids dont want to play any more. Growing up in the inner city of Philadelphia I witnessed this ideoligy. A smaller individual or group would do something so terrible that no one in there right mind would want to bother them or disrupt ther daily way of life. The best and most horrific incident when this occured was when the U.S. dropped Fat Man and Little Boy on Japan, shortly after the war was over. These weapons scared the world so much that no country has attacked the U.S. since. If a country was able hack into foreign financial systems and stop the movement of all soft money. They too could achieve a similar result. Terrorism is not about violence at all, it is just the preferred method.

The modern Islamic extremist movement was founded with help from the CIA to first overthrow a communist government in Afghanistan and then kick the soviets out when they invaded. When the insurgency succeeded, the CIA disconnected ties with it, but it continued as a rogue moment. It proceeded to try to kick the US out of Saudi Arabia and Israel out of the holy land through suicide attacks and other forms of terrorism. This culminated in 9/11 when 19 hijackers caused the collapse of the two World Trade Center buildings.
More recent Us foreign policy, most notably the invasion of Iraq has also caused the increase of terrorism. Before the US led invasion of Iraq, there was little if any presence of Al Qaeda. However, terrorists flocked to Iraq after the invasion and began building up a large indigenous presence, although the surge has had some success in reducing levels of Al Qaeda presence in Iraq.

Religious Affiliation and Proselytism
Hamas: Hamas considers itself Sunni and does not see proselytism as terribly important as the overwhelming majority of Palestinians are Sunni Muslims.
Hezbollah: Hezbollah considers itself to be Shiite Muslim and operates in countries where Shiites are a minority (primarily Syria and Lebanon). Therefore Hezbollah actively tries to proselytize Shiite Islam to the Sunni Muslim population.
Methods of Government Control
Hamas: Hamas militants have actually evicted the de jure Palestinian Authority Government after issues in setting up a multi-party state. Hamas maintains sole control of the Gaza Strip and has no representation in any government outside of the Gaza Strip. Hamas is headquartered in Damascus, yet has no say in the Syrian government
Hezbollah: Hezbollah is an active part of both the Lebanese and Syrian regimes where it operates. It has government ministers in Lebanon that serve alongside other Shiite and non-Shiite confessional representatives. However, when things did not go according to Hezbollah's desires, they rioted in central Beirut. In Syria, it has committed members to operating alongside the Shiite Alawite Regime of Bashar Al-Assad. Hezbollah considers itself part of governments, but not exclusively.

Hezbollah: Hezbollah has all of the types of armaments that Hamas has, but does have armored cars, simple tanks, long-range Soviet missiles and other more established military technologies. Hezbollah operates more like an under-equipped private army than an over-equipped guerrilla organization.

al'Qaeda was fromed completely differently. Saudi citizens found oil which attracted America. Saudi malitia dispised the west and didn't like the US being in Saudia Arabia. Osama Bin Laden had created al'Qaeda and offered the Saudi Princes that he could protect them with thousands of Saudi soldiers. However, America offered tens of thousands of American Troops. The US needed to have control of Oil in Saudi Arabia because it was a necessity to America's defence and way of life. Bin Laden's offer got turned down and he lashed out at America. And al'Qeada was formed.
