Toyota RAV4

I had the same problem. Took it to Jiffy Lube they couldn't and finally had to take it to Toyota Dealer and got it done.

In the trunk of the car are two compartments directly behind where the taillights are. Open the one behind the taillight that is out. Then pop off the protective black cover on the side of the compartment. The three bulbs (Tail/Brake, Reverse, Turn signal) are in three sockets that are removed by rotating them to the left (righty tighty, lefty loosey) and then pulling them back toward the fron of the car. The bulbs pull out of the socket, no twisting, pushing, or tools required.

The front top valve cover has 2 pieces (main cover and pcv cover). The PCV is located under the small cover (has a 6 inch hose attached to it) on top of the front valve cover . If you look at the front valve cover, you'll see four (4) bolts. The two outer bolts fasten the valve cover to the cylinder head. The two inner bolts hold the PCV cover to the valve cover. To gain access to the PCV valve, you remove the two inner bolts and remove the PCV cover, leaving the valve cover fastened to the cylinder head. It might take some "persuasion" to get the cover off. Once you have the PCV valve cover off the valve cover, there will be a large square seal (looks like a big o-ring) that seals the perimeter of the PCV cover. There will also be two o-rings that seal the PCV cover bolt bosses to the valve cover. The PCV valve is located on the right side of the opening. You can't miss. Just unscrew it and spray some WD40 on it and work it around. Pick up another PCV cover o-ring and the two o-rings located underneath the cover bolts (3 seals total) at the dealer or parts store. They're probably hard as stones by now.

First find your tensioner pulley( it should be the one that is attached to an "arm"), it should be either a 3/8 or 1/2 inch drive ratchet to raise this. Next take your top two bolts out. Then, and this is the hard part, reach around the bottom of the alternator to the inside of it, you should find your third and final boltat the bottom of the alternotor. This bolt is extremely hard to get out but with a lot of patience and bashed knuckles your alternator should come right out. Just to add more detail to the above: 1. Disconnect the negative (black) cable from the battery. 8mm wrench works best. 2. Loosen and remove serpentine belt from alternator pulley. Use a 3/8" drive on the tensioner arm and pull counterclockwise to loosen. 3. Remove the top securing bolt from alternator/bracket assy. 13mm bolt. 4. Loosen, but do not remove top bracket assy arm. 13mm bolt on top of engine. 5. Remove nut from middle bracket assy. I suggest removing this small arm entirely to expedite removal of the alternator. 10mm nut on alternator stud and 13mm on engine stud. 6. Make sure all children are out of earshot for this step. You are now ready to remove the dreaded pivot bolt. 13mm bolt and a 15mm nut. Your best bet here is to get a box end wrench on the nut and a socket on the bolt. After you have recovered the wrench several times from dropping it and bandaging your hands from the numerous cuts you have sustained, remove the pivot bolt and fish out the 15mm nut you dropped. 7. Unplug the electrical connector and remove the power lead (13mm). 8. Remove alternator. 9. Remove bracket stud from old alternator and put it on the new one. 14mm 10. Install new alternator by reversing the above steps. This is really a 20 minute job that will turn into an hour long test of your patience. I want to personally thank the engineers at GM for making the pivot bolt nut almost inaccesable. It may actually be easier to disconnect the wishbones and rotate the engine. Maybe next time.

You can go as far as your legs will carry you. I do like the legs answer, but thought this may help. First, you need to know a couple things about your vehicle. How far a single gallon of gas will take you and how many gallons you have left in your tank when the fuel light comes on. As soon as you can the next time the fuel light comes on, take out a loan and fill your tank. Note how many gallons of gas it took to fill it. Subtract that number of gallons from the total gallons your tank holds. That number will be how many gallons you have remaining when your fuel light comes on. If you know how many miles your truck will go on a gallon of gas, multiply your mileage by the number of gallons you have remaining when the fuel light comes on to get an idea how far you can continue before the engine dies of thirst. Example: Car "A" gets 30mpg. Fuel light comes on when I have 4 gallons of gas remaining in tank. 30mpg x 4 gallons =120 miles.

Timing Chain

Push the odometer button 'til trip one shows. Turn off ignition. Hold down odometer button and start engine. Wait 'til it cycles to 0000 and release.

It is in front of the oil pan (toward front of car). Reach up in front of oil pan and you should feel bottom of filter.

There should be a Phillips Screw on the side by the kick start remove screw and fill until oil comes out

There are too many reasons to list here. The "Check Engine" light will come on any time there's a fault detected by an engine sensor. Sensors measure everything from the amount of air flowing into your engine to the quality of air flowing out. There are knock sensors and coolant sensors. More sensors keep track of throttle opening, oil temperature and even the condition of fuel injectors. If your light is on you can visit your Toyota dealer for an analysis of the problem or, stop by any auto supply store that will loan an OBDII code reader. Plug the reader in under your dash (just to the right of the steering column) and follow the instructions. Depending on the quality of the tester you'll be shown a number matching a fault or text detailing the problem. Once the detected problem is repaired you can use the code reader to 'reset' (erase) the trouble code and the light will be turned off. BTW in the future it would be helpful if anyone asking questions on this or other automotive forums would mention the year/model of their car. Sometimes 4 cylinder vehicles of the same model require different answers than 6 cylinder. Solara's come in generation 1, 2 and 2.5 models sometimes requiring different answers for different generations.

Open the glove box. Remove the screw with a Phillips-head screwdriver and slide off the damper. Push each side of the glove box to disconnect the claws. Allow glove box door to hang down. Remove filter from filter outlet. Replace filter. Ensure arrow mark on edge of filter points up. Install using reverse procedure.

with great difficulty if its a diesel

okm the easy way to tell is to see if there is a gear shifter or button that says 4x4. if theres not then its 2 wheel drive. look to see if there is arear end under it cause some ravs are front wheel drive . if it is four wheel drive and you want to check to see if it works get on an incline lock it into four wheeel drive and spend the tires over if only the one set of tires spin then its tore up

If you are asking about the 5.7L engine, Read on!

Believe me it not as easy as you think. The oil filter is up under the skid plate on the 5.7L engine and it's NOT a traditional spin-on filter. I went looking for it, finally I went on the Toyota owners web page to find out how to change the oil filter. After reading that it's a paper filter and requires dropping the skid plate and removing 4 screws to change the filter (If you don't get it sealed right it will leak.) I decided to let Toyota change it and avoid the hassle. ALSO the engine requires 0-20 viscosity oil or in a pinch 5-20 for a short term fix.

I used to do all my own maintenance on my vehicles. Today it's imposable I think I still know how to check the air in the tires and Toyota already has an on-board gauge for that.

I don't know what type of car you're talking about ---but -- I had the same problem on my 2001 Buick Century ---it says how to turn on the "low tire" lite in your manual ---- go to the fuse box (I assume the procedure is the sam e for most American cars ) they're should be a "reset " button --- on my car it said to hold the reset button in for 3 sec --( reset button is usually red )---

the oil filter is on the left hand side of the engine (if you are looking at it from the front of the car with the hood open), behind the crank pulley.
